We had a wonderful time at thobeka! We stayed in a neat rustic african en suite reed hut. There is a communal kitchen-hut, a braai area next to the pool and bar and every evening everyone gathers around the fireplace. The hosting family was super friendly, welcoming and helpful. They arranged activities and daytrips and did everything to make our... More

We had a wonderfull stay. Real african feeling and really friendly family. Shame we were the only people in the hostel, because we think this place is amazing, also for groups and friends. Relaxed braai area and camp fire. Dont forget your 4x4 and earplugs. There is not much to do in kosi bay without 4x4. Even to the beach... More

Under new management since September 2015, this backpackers is a great place to stay! Unfortunately I was the only guest at Thobeka's during my two night stay, but did encouraged the owners to invite me to a family braai, and they organized an african dinner the second night. Amazing value too, at R150/night. With Kosi Bay now easily accessible trough... More

Thobeka is a very nice location to hang out, relax and explore the area around Kosi Bay. Peter, the new owner, is very nice and Trevor is a great guide. The place is eco friendly, has a pool, self catering kitchen and a great bar with music and cold beers. You have to try surfing or snorkeling and also get... More

My stay at Thobeka Backpackers was supposed to be for two days, but eventually I stayed for 5 days because of the lovely service and nice activities. The owner really showed me the highlights of Kosi Bay. All the nice hiking trips around Kosi Bay and putting some fish on the braai next to the lake. Lovely!

Thobeka's setting in the bush creates a real African feeling. Getting connected with nature was made possible by Trevor and his local guides who showed us the gems of Kosi Bay: Hiking through the Wetland Park, exploring the traditional fish traps and snorkelling with vividly coloured fish while spending the warm nights around the bonfire with people from all over... We stayed 5 days at Thobeka last May and it has been a really great experience. As it was low season, the owner, Trevor, took time to make us discover the beautiful area of Kosi Bay: snorkelling, kayak, trekking, fishing!! We even shared a meal with fresh fishes from the lakes that we will remembre for a long time! Room... More

Trevor went out of his way to look after us during our stay at Thobeka. He was knowledgeable and passionate about the local area, happily organising trips for us which we wouldn't have known where to start with doing them ourselves! The accommodation was great and the atmosphere at the backpackers is wonderful; relaxing and tranquil. Everyone should treat themselves... More

We met Trevor on the beach at Kosi Mouth. A remote lake which is part of a pristine wetlands system on the Mozambique border. We were introduced by young "Ursula" of James Bond fame who emerged from a lagoon wearing a bikini and sporting a mask and snorkel! We were struggling to find our way accross the deep lagoons so... Each room is connected by wooden walkways that lead to a fully fitted kitchen, hot showers and toilets, a swimming pool and most important of all - the bar! Each room is separated by a rustic wooden walkway allowing you the privacy and space to kick back and enjoy uninterrupted relaxation time and includes comfortable beds, mosquito nets and a fan for those warm lazy afternoons and balmy African evenings. Our self-catering kitchen is well-stocked with cooking utensils, crockery and fridges as well as tea, coffee and sugar. We provide hot showers and toilets as well as a laundry service at a small fee so you can put on some clean clothing after enjoying a hot revitalising shower. Beside the bar is our swimming pool should you wish to take a dip and cool off not far from yet another cold beer. Our braai area is located next to the pool and about three steps from the bar so you can braai, take a dip in the pool, a swig of your beer and embrace the freedom that Thobeka offers you. Thobeka supplies braai packs consisting of steak /chop, boerewors (sausage), veggies (corn / sweet potato / butternut) and one beer, or freshly caught fish from the fish traps (1 days notice required).
