We spent a week exploring Yorkshire and Northumbria, staying mainly in pubs/inns. The 2nights we had at the Tickled Trout were by far the best.
Covid precautions were well observed, with an efficient manager going to great lengths to train what were obviously new staff.
Although a pub, it also has the feel of a" restaurant with rooms". There's an excellent outside drinking space, complete with BBQ. Inside, it's cosy, mainly tables but little standing space around the bar.
Our bedroom was very comfortable, with a large bathroom (rolltop bath, as well as a shower).
We only ate here on one evening - the food was excellent (definitely not pub grub), with an inexpensive wine list. Some local friends from Wetherby joined us for dinner and commented on how much the place had improved since their last visit about 10 years ago!
We'd definitely stay again.

This is a top notch gastro pub in a beautiful North Yorkshire village which made for a charming setting. It was a warm summers evening and we were sat outside but undercover. Seating was very comfortable, a point that far too many places get wrong. The highlight of my meal was the extraordinarily good Crab Soup, flavoured with brandy. I'm a big soup fan and this will go down as one of my top ten. Beautfully balanced flavours, rich, warming and a perfect mix. Lovely texture, colour and viscosity. Just go for this treat! My trout main course was perfectly acceptable but lacked a similar appeal - ordinaire which isn't bad but.... Others enjoyed their meals, some well done pub favourites but many other dishes with more imagination. Service was very good but prices seemed high - about £48 a head with not a lot of booze drunk. This explains the four as opposed to five stars. Nevertheless, I'd be very happy to return.

Stayed here for two nights as at a wedding close by. Had food in the restaurant on the first evening which was brilliant - menu had so much choice, we had starters and mains and both were really lovely. Would give 5 stars for the evening food.

We stayed in ‘the swale’ - Our room was fantastic, nice big stand alone bath and huge shower too. Comfortable beds, clean and very spacious, good WiFi and Alexa in the room. There was only 1 small mirror in the bedroom and another in the bathroom, it would have been great to have a full length mirror somewhere. There’s also nowhere to get ready, no dressing table or desk. Had to plug in our appliances by our bed and then stand awkwardly getting ready in one small mirror. Breakfast included with the room, we both thought was fairly average given the price of the stay, and how brilliant dinner had been.

As we were staying for the wedding we didn’t spend much time in the room, however the time we did spend (other than sleeping) I wouldn’t say was ‘relaxing’ if that’s the break you’re looking for. You can hear a lot of noise coming from other rooms, and the restaurant downstairs was blaring Adele very early in the morning meaning we could hear this from our room which was annoying. The morning of check out, the cleaner cleaned next door from 9am and talked very loudly throughout which again was quite annoying for us as we werent checking out until 11am and wanted to spend the morning relaxing before driving back 3 hours which we didn’t get to do.

My partner surprised me with a night away in York for the Christmas market. We travelled 4 hours to get there, we was greeted by a staff who showed us to our room. It was a lovely decorated room we stayed in the best room which was Swale. But to our utter disappointment it was freezing. We told a waitress at dinner that the room was actually so cold we needed more milk for hot drinks. She gave us the milk but didn’t seem interested in the coldness of the room. Myself and my partner each had a bath which did warm us up after being out in the snow. But the heating in the room wasn’t acceptable. The radiators wasn’t hot and the bathroom one didn’t seem to work. Thankfully the duvet was warm but the morning came and when we woke we saw that we could actually see out breath where it was so cold. We went down for breakfast and only one waitress was there, who took a while to get our food. We sat by the fire so we got about half an hour of warmth. It was 9:30 that the heating then started to come back on again. I’m not sure on why they would turn off the heating in November with snow falling. We left straight after breakfast as it was just too cold to stay. It was an expensive night and we spent most of it shivering. Again the staff didn’t do anything about it, and just left us to be cold. So only 1 star is being given for the lack of staff compassion or actual customer service. We shouldn’t pay nearly £200 for a nights stay to be that cold where we can breath steam out into a freezing cold room. Just is not acceptable. Fingers crossed they get it sorted and more visitors not encounter the same as we did. We will be going back to York, and probably to eat evening meals at the Tickled Trout but definitely not to stay.

The young lady who was the "manager" was chatty, explained that the wine list was depleted & another young lady was chatty, but the young men looked scared & not much conversation.
Starters of Tempura prawns good - endowed with salad Hubby had Asian Tuna felt salad overpowered the dish.
Fish & chips were ok - chips slightly tough.
The surf & turf was overdone - asked for Rare it was v medium.

We went here last night for an evening meal. We were too couples. As indoor dining is not yet permitted due to COVID restrictions, we had a table outside in one of the teepee tents. Service was polite, prompt and friendly. Quality of the food excellent. The bill came to £160 for four people (not including a tip) for 3 courses with an aperitif each and a bottle of wine to share. About what you’d expect. The only thing which spoilt it was the neighbouring table of self-entitled, ignorant chavs who were so loud we couldn’t hear each other. This was not the waiting staff’s fault and they dealt with this well by moving us to a different table as soon as one became available. We would definitely visit again; hopefully next time the clientele will be less undesirable.

Stayed here recently with my partner whilst visiting family in York. Although we had not booked dinner before arrival, an outside table was found and we had an enjoyable dinner comprising seafood starter and main fish courses. The dishes were cooked to perfection and the service was admirable.

We stayed in one of the ensuite rooms, all are themed in boutique style. Ours had a luxurious king size bed and lovely free standing bath with natural wooden floors. Amazing value when reserved on booking.com website. The breakfast was excellent too. I had the kippers and my partner had poached eggs. Would not hesitate to stay here again. The manager was so hospitable too. Well done all round Tickled Trout Inn!

Great rooms and good food in the restaurant but what made this place special was the staff who went the extra mile. They were so helpul, friendly and efficient. Worked well as a team and very welcoming. This restaurant with rooms is in a peaceful village just off the main road and not far from York and Wetherby

Good atmosphere, nice place but food whilst ok could be much better. Crab martini starter clearly made hours ago and refrigerated. Prawns and sea bass in my meal overcooked. Four of us were underwhelmed.

I spent four nights here, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

The Inn is located on a dead-end lane in peaceful, quiet countryside just outside Yok, so good for light sleepers. Every night I was there I ate in the restaurant, and the food was excellent, as was breakfast, with a varied menu which was not so long as to suggest catering packs, and not so short that I ever had to eat the same thing twice over the eight meals I ate there.

My room was spacious, very well equipped, with a huge bathroom and a big balcony which you could sit on and watch the sun go down.

Finally, the staff were universally friendly and helpful, and seemed to really want to make my stay as enjoyable as possible.

So, all in all, very highly recommended.
