After reading the reviews regarding the rooms we were a little hesitant, but we needn’t have been. Yes no headboard, was it a problem - nope, 2 big comfy pillows, rooms were clean (we had booked 3), although one didn’t have the shower gel/shampoo in this wasn’t a problem as ours did, but I’m sure if we’d mentioned it to housekeeping we could’ve got a replacement for the missing one. Yes some of the furniture is a little dated, but it’s clean, sturdy and functional. Big spacious rooms, views of the river, quiet road, it was a hot day so we slept with our windows open all night. Breakfast was slow to be served, waiting for nearly an hour and only us in, but we weren’t in a rush. Breakfast maybe 5/10, hotel 8/10, the staff we encountered 10/10. We would definitely stay again when visiting.

I came to the unicorn today for a meal with family. Under the circumstances we got in pretty swiftly but professionally and safley following all guidelines. We all ate and I realised you was busy but we stayed. We ordered our food.. we had a vegi burger, posh fish finger sandwich and scampi. We were expecting to wait about 30 minutes for food as I seen u was busy. We were all surprised after 15 minutes our food was at our table looking amazing. The speed and quality of the food was brilliant. After our meal we stayed for a few drinks served by Michelle and Louisa. During our drinks a chap came out and joined a lady for a drink. Just moments after he over heard a convo we were having about the service and he came over to us at a safe distance and introduced himself as mikey The chef that prepared our meal. We thanked him gracefully and told him we will be back. Lovely guy and pub.

Party of 2 couples, we stayed overnight , had drinks in the bar late afternoon, and breakfast . The staff are terrific, the service excellent- particularly given restrictions forced on them by the Covid situation. Whole set up was well organised and well managed, without making it stressful to follow the rules. Rooms were clean, spacious, with large comfortable beds and a decent bath/ shower( not always the case in some places we’ve stayed and paid much more!). Very reasonably priced for the rooms, English Breakfast and drinks. Manageress Jen or a staff member was always on hand to help with requests or queries. We would certainly use this hotel again.

Had time to kill in Gunthorpe (As you do..) and we stopped for coffee. So impressed with approach to COVID conditions we cameback later for lunch. Very helpful staff impressed at food order taker repeatedly washing hands after serving folk and clear directions etc. For someone who has been shielding this was v reassuring. Thanks to your team . Rotisserie chicken was excellent would be happy to return.

Stayed two nights with husband whilst visiting family in the area. This was our third visit in the last couple of years but this time we won’t be back. The Unicorn has gone sadly downhill and needs some serious attention. We checked in later than expected but I called the hotel to let them know. Had requested a room at the front which we did get. Husband discovered immediately that his bedside light wasn’t working so, as there are no phones in the room, he had to go back down to reception. Housekeeper came up to check we knew how to operate the On switch, agreed the bulb had blown and fetched a replacement. With hindsight, should have kept her there whilst we checked the rest of the room and the bathroom. There was no lid on the toilet, could see where it had broken away. Unhygienic (who flushes the loo with the lid up?) plus nowhere to sit or put clothes, no stool or door hooks. Seal on base of shower screen totally filthy. Took it off and ran it under the tap and lots of black gunge came off. Next morning I actually removed it again, squirted it with liquid soap and left it soaking in the bath in hot water - hint to cleaner. Soap dish on shower pole broken off, just a stump left. No glasses in bathroom or bedroom, making teeth cleaning interesting. Non stick stickers in bottom of bath needed replacing. Towels were a good size though. Plastic glasses appeared in bathroom the next day. Hooks missing from bedroom curtains. Tv not working. We didn’t discover this until the night before we left so couldn’t report it til the next morning. Duty Manager (?) said it WAS working and suggested husband hadn’t known how to find channels. Husband is tv whizz and if he can’t tune in a tv, no one can. How can someone clean a room without seeing the bathroom deficiencies and not report them? How can someone check the room and not see what’s broken and missing. However bed and pillows very comfy and we slept well. Tea/coffee tray with biscuits. Hairdryer. Breakfast on first day. No orange juice, only cranberry and apple. Odd. Probably not most people’s first choice. “Selection of fresh fruit”:comprised two apples, two bananas and an orange. I ate the orange so the picture shows the bowl after. why no grapefruit or prunes? Husband wanted the classic breakfast but not mushrooms, baked beans or black pudding. Could he substitute anything he asked? No, said the waitress, it’s a set breakfast. After some pleading, she said she’d see what she could do. He got an extra potato cake and an extra HALF slice of bacon. Bacon had been cooked some time ago and kept hot. Seriously dry. I would have sent it back but husband is more tolerant and also we were in a hurry. Pleased to see chocolate croissants but these were not fresh. I have a chocolate croissant for breakfast every day at home so I know exactly how they should be. Selection of other Danish pastries. Can’t comment on those. Why not put up a sign “croissants available on request” and keep them in the freezer. No marmalade. Strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant jam, honey and marmite, might also have been chocolate spread. Butter nicely melted as not in a bowl of ice and next to the toaster. Make your own tea or instant coffee. Cups but no saucers. Next morning I told the waitress that before committing to breakfast, I wanted to check if there was still an orange available (citing the example that there had only been one the previous day and someone might have eaten it!). Also if there was orange juice because there hadn’t been any the previous day. Yes they did had orange juice the previous day, she said making me ask Well why not put it out? Husband raised same query over breakfast and new waitress (think she was Duty Manager) more obliging, said although breakfast indeed a set breakfast, it was a matter of having a word with the chef......... Had another chocolate croissant plus a plain one and sadly neither were fresh. We’d already raised some of our complaints with her when we came downstairs but were still surprised when she said we wouldn’t be charged for our second breakfast. On the plus side there is plenty of parking and a lovely view over the river at the front. If you plan to arrive in the dark, it’s not easy to find. We’ve twice missed the turning and found ourselves on the wrong side of the river. So use your satnav and drive slow! Do I recommend? No I don’t. Seriously irritated by the bathroom errors and unhappy with breakfast. Will I go back? No, for reasons above.
