Everybody has a different idea as to what makes an ideal holiday destination. For us it was winter sun with warm temperatures and a good beach, so after Thailand was chosen, our travel agent found us some medium sized resorts to look at.
The Apsara Beachfront Resort and Villas near Khao Lak came out on top, and we duly made the trip to Thailand at the end of January - we were not disappointed. The main attraction of the resort was the beach, where the soft sand and unspoilt coastline is beautiful. To the south it is a couple of miles to the next resort, a walk that we did just about every day, with only the sound of the waves to break the silence. Often you could be half a mile away from anybody else, with only a few hermit crabs for company and the sea is warm and very safe for a dip. There are some good waves, we enjoyed watching the surfers and it is possible to hire boards. To the north the beach is not quite as good, but there were some colourful fishing boats to see, but beware of tripping over a mooring rope or half hidden anchor when paddling in the shallow water.
As for Apsara itself, the resort for us was an excellent place to say, making the 90 minute road trip from Phuket airport certainly worth it. Accommodation is split into two halves, being bisected by a running into the sea. On one side is the main part of the resort with the Kinnaree restaurant, infinity pool, the pool that has swim up rooms, bars and hotel rooms, while at the other side are the villas, which have private pools or jacuzzies. There is also the Napalai restaurant and an attractive pool on this side of the stream, for those that have chosen this type of accommodation.
There is a bridge between the two, although the stream is easy to cross at low tide, it becomes much more of a challenge when the tide is coming in. We opted for a half board package, and were pleased that we did, we enjoyed a good choice at the buffet breakfasts and dinners in the Kinnaree Restaurant. The bars for all- inclusive guests did not have the beach views that the Karkinos Beach Club has. Here we could be found twice a day during ‘Happy Hour’ where we were served by some extremely friendly and helpful staff, led by Porn who was always up for a bit of fun. Watching the sun set over the sea from this location is a must. Mosquitoes are prevalent from dusk, if you react badly to their bites an effective repellent is a must.
We cannot speak highly enough of the Apsara staff, everybody is so genuinely friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. We decided to upgrade to a private pool villa halfway through our two week stay where Golf the manager was extremely helpful. While Guest Relations Manager Emee always greeted you with a big smile and checked your holiday was going well, and Kinnaree restaurant manager Chay ensured everything ran smoothly. All of the restaurant staff worked hard, but a special shout out to Kathin, who was always there at breakfast with a much-appreciated top up of coffee. The food in the restaurant was varied, the cooked to order stations were great and even for somebody who isn’t that keen on Thai food, there was always something to enjoy.
Our deluxe room and then our pool villa were both kept beautiful clean by housekeeping, bedding and towels were changed as frequently as we wanted. The bed in the deluxe room was large and firm, the one in the villa was huge and very comfortable.
For those who fancy a change from the resort’s facilities, the Memories Bar just along the beach is another alternative for food and drink.
There are a number of sunbeds around the infinity pool area, where the age-old competition of reserving one with a towel takes place on a daily basis. We generally didn’t bother, preferring to wander along the beach before returning to the resort, and enjoying a ‘Happy Hour’. The infinity pool is in a lovely setting and a good length but the tiles appear to need cleaning. The pool round the swim up rooms is very attractive and the cooler water makes for a refreshing dip.
As for entertainment at the resort, it is limited. Weekly there was a dramatic ‘fire’ show on the beach one night, while some Thai dancers performed their traditional routines on another night.
While a beachwear shop, gift shop and tailor are on site, there is no mini store for essentials, although Lilly’s Mini Market is located about a quarter of a mile away. Trips to local markets are available, with a shuttle bus taking visitors to Kao Lak on a daily basis, while other trips out can be booked through the resort.
This is a rather isolated resort, but it suited us. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Apsara, and are already thinking about a return visit next year.

The Apsara Beachfront Resort and Villa, is located at Pakarang Beach which is just 90 minutes from Phuket International Airport.

It was late November / early December, the weather was glorious. As you approach the resort you see the wide beach with its beautiful, white sand and clear seas.

The beach is perfect for early morning jogs and evening sunset runs too, never crowded, the ocean was warm and we loved watching the surfers.

The sunsets are out of this world. A great place to chill, just heavenly.

The tide goes out a long way leaving a lovely long stretch of white sand beach. There is a good selection of bars and activities. Whilst we were there the resort seemed popular with European guests and honeymooners.

Its close to nature beach, forest and mountains. From the website Apsara can be divided into two zones for accommodation choices.

The Resort Zone (195 rooms) is close to the beach and swimming pools. The beachfront resort zone is good for families, lively ambiance while across the lagoon bridge at The Villa Zone (60 villas) the village setting offers privacy and tranquility.

We had booked a Pool Villa and it was perfect. Self contained with 100% privacy behind a locked entrance and walled garden.

The pool had a built in Jacuzzi and a shaded outdoor dining area and 2 sun loungers. It was well designed. Its the top category of accommodation, tropical and good design spacious. The villa has a good bedroom and heaps of space with a rain shower and with large sliding doors to the swimming pool and sundeck. Its just a short walk to the beach.

What we particularly liked was the Villa Apsara, club like, with its own restaurant, bars and pools. It was good and the food and staff outstanding.

We had most of our meals at the club’s Napalai Restaurant it was so good.

The room Amenities incl most of what you need plus flat screen TV’s and DVD players, Free WiFi, electronic safes and free drinking water.

Many activities is easy. We spent most of our time around the pool but there’s Thai cooking classes, fruit carving, batik painting, photography, bird watching, kayaking, cycling and a gym.

There’s a shuttle bus to Khao Lak town centre and shopping and restaurants. Days tours available to Takuapa Old Town, Buddhist temples, golf, diving and snorkelling.

We arrived at the Apsara for a two week stay on the 12th March.
Due to long overnight flight we arrived at the hotel long before check in at 7am after a welcome drink we had breakfast and relaxed in the "snooze" lounge and it wasn't long before one of the staff were letting us know that our room was ready at 9am.
We had a swim up room no 117 (personally rooms 112-124 are the best located of the swim ups) room was in good order and well looked after throughout the holiday. The only issue to be aware of is the bath, it is extremely high and anyone with joint conditions or less mobile may find it very difficult to get in and out of to shower.
Food is predominately served in the main restaurant buffet style and is of a good standard and variation although like with any buffet it does tend to get samey by the end but this is not the hotels fault. There are also two al la carte restaurants and you are allowed to use one or the other twice during the 2 week stay. We used Zeus which was very nice with the views out to sea.
However this is where the interesting kicks in, we actually used Zeus for all meals for the last couple of days as the hotel was literally closing down around us with hardly any guests left due to the coronavirus and the travel restrictions.
Unfortuantely the whole background to what was happening both in the UK and Thailand made for a very strange holiday and one which makes it difficult to review the hotel properly.
That said the location is wonderful for R&R and the staff were all really friendly and helpful except one awful waitress who worked the buffet at breakfast and lunch and who somehow had recently won employee of the month. She was nothing short of rude but that was the only disappointment.
When hopefully we travel again if you want a relaxing holiday then this would definitely be a place to consider.

The setting for the hotel is perfect, set in front of miles of pristine white sand. Cormorants and egrets stand on the banks of the lagoon that splits the beach, waiting to fish, thousands of tiny hermit crabs form a carpet of complex geometric patterns with the microscopic balls of sand that they eject when building their homes. The hotel is split into two areas joined by a bridge over the lagoon. One area houses the villas and the other the main resort area. There is a difference in the all inclusive packages offered by each area. The red package for villa owners offers entry to two a la carte restaurants as well as the main resort restaurant. The blue all inclusive package for resort tourists simply offers entry to Kinnaree restaurant which is buffet service for all meals. A complimentary visit to the a la carte restaurants is offered at the rate of one visit per week of stay. Bars for all inclusive guests are similarly differentiated, the main beach bar at Zeus restaurant is not available for all inclusive drinks for resort tourists even though it is right in the middle of the resort area. There are however two other bars, the ILA lounge and the Kinnaree bar that are available for all. The rooms in resort area are clean and well maintained but new bathroom towels are needed to replace the rather threadbare ones on offer now. The over the bath shower is badly in need of a refurb and it is something of an obstacle race to climb into and out of. Tables in the main buffet restaurant are set with plastic place mats and the number of flies around the buffet stations is a concern. The staff are charming, courteous and helpful. Food is imaginative and tasty. Our stay at the hotel was enjoyable but there are certainly ways in which the hotel could improve.

We arrived on Friday evening the 28 February 2020.. We were very tired but were received by wonderful staff and shown to a second floor room over looking the gardens on the hotel approach. My Mrs sadly tripped and fell on the way in to the hotel a total accident and no fault of the hotel. The next day we were dealt with by Emee who listened to our need and upgraded us to a Beach Front ground floor room for the next 16 nights. The cost 11,500 Bht circa £300 worth every penny and we were given a luxury private meal on the Beach. Beautiful peaceful location with great access to a fabulous beach lovely gardens pool area Spa and Luvury Villas on a separate site with three restaurants 2 being al la Carte and only available to fully inclusive guests once a week but food in all excellent. Within a half mile of the hotel walking there are Six Quality Eateries we enjoyed especially Happy Restaurant Blue Mist and Blue Sea and the Memories Beach Restaurant. The hotel was not excessively costly to eat within but local restaurants offered us as B& B guests plenty of choice and we loved it. We are considering returning next year same time as full board guests with TUI assuming Corona Virus doesn't kill them or the hotel's livelihood. It's a 20 min taxi/shuttle ride into Khoa Lak centre which we undertook on one occassion cost 650 Bht return. That was nostalgic as we stayed in Central Khao Lak last year.

We stayed in a pool villa on this our third visit to this great hotel, which means you have your own private pool as well as the use of all the other pools on site. It always seems very peaceful with wonderful friendly staff who can't do enough for you. The hotel is situated on a huge sandy beach with no sun loungers allowed meaning no hawkers either. It is very quiet with no noisy nightlife although that is available a short taxi ride away. There are 3 restaurants,2 a la carte & 1 buffet serving a mixture of Thai & western food
Highly recommend this place for everyone

This was our first time to the Apsara, and it won’t be the last. We booked the all inclusive and it was great, food was great, good choices at every meal time, in our opinion there was something for everyone and great afternoon tea. There was an excellent choice of cocktails, all freshly made by the amazing bar staff, wine with meals, and freshly ground coffee if you fancied one during the day. The rooms were good with huge comfortable beds and always well looked after. The sea and beach were amazing. Perfect clean soft sand and lovely warm water. We regularly went for a walk through the woods bordering the beach and were amazed how clean they were, no litter or plastic bottles. The hotel seems to take the environment seriously, no plastic straws, you have to ask for a straw and they give you a cardboard one, and the water in the room is in a glass bottle, recyclable. We were well impressed. The Zeus bar was lovely, right on the beach and a lovely atmosphere and again the staff were great, especially Joe who was new to the hotel and he treated us like royalty, thank you Joe. We loved this hotel, all the staff were always so pleasant and friendly, we hope to return next year. We can definitely recommend.

Overall an Ok stay. We really wanted to like this hotel and was looking forward to our stay. However straight away we were hit with dissapointment when we were told we are only entitled to use the buffett and must use a single one use voucher for one of the 2 restaurants. This was annoying as it is advertised as full use off the buffet and two restauraunts. VERY Misleading by TUI & Hotel. I have never been to an all inclusive before when you havent been able to use all the restauraunts. (Mexico all inclusives are too such a high standard EVERYTHING is included. Maybe my standards should be lowered for Thailand.) The food in the buffet was good some nights but very hit and miss and abit repatitive. Also as an all inclusive guest you are treated like second class when it comes to drinks, if you are paying you will recieve cans of branded drinks, proper cocktails, real fruit juice.. however if you are an all inclusive you are not entitled to the canned drinks or proper cocktails. The cocktails are awful nearly undrinkable. The cocktails are literally flavoured water with very slight alcohol contents. The ‘7up’ is in a jug more like water with lemons in. The drinks were the biggest dissapointment also the promise of a swim up bar however they dont say you can only get drinks there if you are staying in a villa (Again treated like second class). TV is very small and only two channels work at once, always freezing and overall again very dissapointing. The wifi seriously needs sorting out sometimes it doesnt work and other times it is so slow it would be quicker to send a message via carrier pigeon back home. Wouldn’t mind slow wifi if there was actually anything to do the hotel has very limitied activities everything that is remotly fun usually comes with a price tag, you have to pay to use the pool table / dart board etc. Entertainment of a night is nil to none, occasionaly a man who pops up and sings a few songs appears every so often. Also the sunbeds at the pool are plastic, very flimsy and not many of them at all. Get there early!!!! The hotel says they enforce that they dont allow sunbed hogging but can guarantee by 10am there is no sunbeds left but also no people on them? Really annoying. To end on a positive note the grounds of the hotel and beach are gorgeous the pool is nice and the staff are lovely. But definitly wouldnt stay again.

We returned last week after fourteen nights at this beautiful hotel. We travelled with TUI from the UK. On arrival we were greeted with an ice cold drink and towel which was very much appreciated after a very long journey. We arrived very early and were told our room would be ready soon and in the meantime to enjoy breakfast- which we did! We loved everything about this hotel. Yes we were staying amongst the corona lock down in the UK, however the staff still remained very professional, attentive and kind. Each day we enjoyed fabulous food, romantic walks along the beach and the best sun sets ever! We booked our trips through the lady in the lobby and these were absolutely out of this world. We were lucky to have the same driver for two of the trips- so if you get Ce say Hi from us! The staff on reception were incredible and a big thank you to Yuni and Emee for looking after us so well. Please stay safe and we look forward to returning to your beautiful hotel in the future.

Stayed 8 nights at end of our Thailand vacation so was looking forward to some relaxation. This hotel did not disappoint from checkin to checkout it was perfect. Nothing is too much trouble for any member of staff all so polite and go out their way to please you. The location was perfect right on the most stunning beach with soft white sand, no beach beds or umbrellas which made it lovely. Our room was lovely, slightly dated but clean and comfortable and looked out onto the gardens. We only stayed bed and breakfast but the variety was excellent every morning. The hotel has its own shuttle bus although not very regular or taxis are located outside the hotel to the main centre where there are many restaurants and the market. If your looking for lively party atmosphere then you will be disappointed, but if you want peace and tranquility then this is the place to stay.

The A la Carte restaurant on site is brilliant. There is also a Italian restaurant there as well also restaurants a short taxi ride away.
