Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It was warm and welcoming to stay and eat there on a snowy night in December. The fresh coffee-making pot and small bottles of fresh milk, as well as slices of homemade cake in the room, were also a lovely touch. The food is definitely the stuff of a Masterchef and we can thoroughly recommend it.

Hi we went here a couple of weeks ago for a night away.
When we arrived we were greeted by Ruth and was shown to our room. It was a nice comfortable room and the decor was overall well presented.
We went down for dinner and there was a nice little buzz in the restaurant.
We had wood pigeon salad and the serrano ham, followed by duck and sirloin steak all very tasty and well presented by the chef Darren and fantastic value for money.
Breakfast was also nice and the walk in the surroundings was great.
Would stay there again
Thanks

We were looking to book somewhere to stay in Somerset/Devon as we were visiting our wedding venue locally. I came across The Rock Inn on Booking.com and followed up by reading some reviews before booking direct with the Inn, as this included breakfast. Communication from the start was excellent. We received a warm welcome - check in was easy and rooms were immaculate! Towels and bed linen were pristine. We occupied three rooms, all different & unique but all of my family commented on the cleanliness and the water pressure - amazing showers! Breakfast was lovely and service throughout was incredibly friendly. We will definitely return and will be informing our wedding guests of this great find!

We know the area very well as the family has had long associations with the Exmoor locale. As a family we booked five rooms for one evening as we had the need to mark the passing of two well loved family members, We were shown into the Snug where our rooms were allocated. Quirky is a word that has been used, but relaxed is more apt. Make the most of the free wifi in the snug as it doesn't penetrate the old walls to the bedrooms.

The bedrooms could be described as boutique and are comfortable. Tea and coffee making facilities and a piece of homemade cake each was a nice touch. A good night's sleep was had by all.

A nice cooked breakfast was served in the morning and we all ate together with no delays.

Unfortunately, we had to leave to return to work the following day.

On arrival we had to phone the number printed in the door because the place was all dark and closed. Fair enough it didnt open until 6pm.
I phoned the number and was told, very politely, that check in was 3pm.

Fair enough.

So Mum and I went and did some sight seeing.
My sat nav struggled and we got a bit lost on the way back to the hotel. I had emailed them and said we would be back later than expected, but we arrived at 6.45pm. We had booked a meal for 7pm.

Well, that's when the issues began.
Mum has limited mobility and she struggled to get up the stairs fast.

The landlady, albeit not unpleasant was very brusque with us, she made it very clear that we had to be back downstairs for 7pm sharp. We felt obliged to comply. It wasnt a relaxing welcome, we felt 'told off'

We went back downstairs immediately for dinner which was delicious but overpriced.

Mum tried to make conversation with the landlady, again it was polite and very clipped so we stopped bothering.

The room was lovely.
Although being a veggie the dead bird painting on the wall was a little off putting? However, I digress, the room was lovely.

There was a frige that contained cute bottles of milk on the landing which was a lovely touch, however the milk was off. There was no telephone in the room and because we felt unwelcome we just drank our drinks black.

Another minor issue with the room, there was no power point near the mirror which made drying and styling my hair impossible, again if I'd felt comfortable doing so I would have asked for an extension lead but I just muddled through.

All in all we didn't have a terrible time, but we did feel' in the way' certainly not relaxed which was a shame.

My husband and I visited the restaurant of The Rock Inn last night for our fourth visit. We have stayed at Waterrow Caravan site for the last 4 years and our annual meal at The Rock Inn is always the highlight of our week! The chef manager and his wife are extremely professional and welcoming. On booking we were asked for any dietary requests and were reminded about mask wearing on entering the restaurant and walking around which reassured us.
The choice and presentation of the meals are consistently of a high quality and the service is of a high standard.
I usually opt for the fish soup as a starter if available and last night it most certainly did not disappoint! The amount of fish pieces in a fabulous tasty bisque was truly amazing. I then opted for a generous portion of hake cooked to perfection in a lemon and butter sauce accompanied by a wonderful tomato risotto and finished with a rhubarb crumble with their own home made vanilla ice cream. My husband opted for the duck breast which was extremely tasty and very tender and his love of the home ice cream for desert again surpassed all his expectation!
We would both highly recommend The Rock Inn restaurant- if only it was in Hampshire!
Thank you and we will see you next year!

Visited here for dinner on our silver wedding anniversary. From booking to walking through the door to leaving we were made to feel very welcome. Staff were very polite and helpful. We had slow cooked steak, which melted in the mouth, and beef goulash. Desert was a bit on the small size, but still yummy. Thank you for a pleasant evening.

We recently stopped off at the Rock Inn en route to Devon and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience .
The confirmation email included some useful travel information , especially relevant weekend arrivals , which is a nice touch and proved useful .
Following a warm welcome we were shown to our room which had a lovely cosy feel and furnishings and some great decor touches, not to mention practical ones too like a cafetière and real cool milk, good quality coffee , tea and fresh muffins , all a million miles away from the chains and very welcome after a longish drive.
As many have said and I concur , dinner was superb and coupled with a friendly service team.
Highly recommended!

I have never been treated so rudely or felt so unwelcome!
We are staying in the local 5 star caravan site for the Easter weekend and having been on a lovely woodland walk came upon the Rock Inn. We went in and, having been ignored for five minutes at the bar (where nobody else was waiting) we were served our drinks. We sat in the bar at an unoccupied table and picked up the Sunday lunch menu. A couple of minutes later, the sheet was taken from my hand and I was informed they were fully booked. There was no apology, we weren't even asked if we had a booking.
So, we had our drinks and were ignored by all the staff for the entire time we were there.
As we left, I said to the lady how rude I thought she had been and how unwelcome we felt. Her reply was 'oh, sorry to hear that, Happy Easter' and she carried on with what she was doing.
I am unable to review the food on offer as we were not given the opportunity to try it.
Avoid if you would like to be served in a polite and courteous manner.

Yet again we had a great time staying at the Rock Inn.
Ruth and Daren and their team are so friendly and welcoming.
Our room was beautifully decorated and the home made muffins are such a treat!
The location is great for visiting Exmoor and if you like a walk their are some challenging ones from the Rock.
And the food, well it is delicious!!
