Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Pohara over the summer holiday is packed with crowds but Sans Souci still provides a calm oasis with bird song making the loudest noise. The accommodation is excellent with thick walls keeping the rooms cool on the hottest days but with outside seating areas to enjoy the sun. Beds are large and firm, very comfortable. The shared bathroom affords excellent privacy and is kept spotlessly clean. The composting toilets are odourless and very easy to use. A commercial-style kitchen is available for guests to use (other than when meals are being prepared for guests) and there is a dining room and llounge for guests too.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit with private bathroom (including composting toilet which was completely odour-free) and well-equipped kitchen. It was beautifully clean and the beds were comfortable. The meal we had in the restaurant was excellent and very generous. Hosts were friendly and attentive. Great location for beach access and nearby attractions. We loved the garden setting, and the eco-friendly approach of the whole complex; it’s clear that the owners have poured so much love and attention into building it up over the years. I hope whoever buys this place will keep it going as is.

I've stayed here before - some 10 years ago - and the owners remembered me from all that time ago, which just gives you an idea of the care and attention that they have put into this place over many years.
It was just as good as I remembered it, simple, very tasteful, light and airy.
The food here is sensational - seriously the best thing you will eat during your trip around NZ, so I cannot recommend dinner highly enough.
Perhaps the composting toilets are not for absolutely everyone (I actually like them and they are spotlessly clean and completely odour free!) , but I really like the way the centralised bathroom facilities have been done.
overall this is still a lovely place to tay 10 years on, and if I ever go back to Pohara / Golden Bay, this will be where I stay again

The place is shining with not only the aesthetics but the rich story behind it. The place is built by the owners with environmentally sound materials decades ahead of time.
Although we did not have the dinner there I could see the food was well prepared with love and care, definitely going back again to try it the next time.

The fish was amazing and the stay really what we were looking for. Beautiful place, respectful of the environment, no fuss, feeling homy and comfortable :)

Staff and owners are really friendly, we felt really welcomed. You are welcome to pick fruits and veggies from the garden.

Pressure of the shower is not strong enough but it's the only downside.

We loved it. Best bed we had on two weeks in Golden Bay. We ate a couple of meals on own own and two prepared by Sans Souci. Friendly helpful staff and great location. If preparing meals for yourself then you will enjoy a Commercial Kitchen with all equipment and utensils available.

Without fail, this fantastic little piece of paradise was perfect for R & R. Whether you are sitting under a plum tree in the orchard, reading a book and eating plums, or relaxing with a Pimms, you will be happy here. We ate at the Restaurant one night, Emma, you are an amazing chef, talk about delicious.
Retro and Vera have fantastic staff, all so friendly and accomodating.
YES, we will return next year!

We love coming to stay here as a family. Beautiful rooms that are cool for sleeping in the summer heat, always clean and lovely helpful staff. We love returning here annually and the scent of the cedar ceiling is something we look forward to. The grounds are spacious and have an abundance of healthy fruit trees - a great place for kids to play in.

Really enjoyed being at Sans souci inn, the care taken to provide an eco friendly inn was impressive, the bed and room were comfortable. A short walk to the beach, yummy food made at their restaurant. Would love to go back

This is a truly BEAUTIFUL destination. The rooms have a smell of peace and relaxation. The grounds are beautiful and the staff are the VERY BEST in Pohara. We feel like family. After 10 years of being here i am finally writing a review and i can honestly sat that words can not describe this destination. Thank you Reto and Vera for hosting us. Oh and the restaurant is "simply the best" in the region.
Make sure this is a destination for you!!!

Hi Anne Thank you for your inquiry. There is one bus a day from the Golden Bay end of the Abel Tasman walk (from Totaranui or Wainui) to Nelson. This bus stops at Pohara where we are. The company that runs the buses is called Golden Bay Coachlines (for some reason Tripadvisor doesn't let me add their website address). Kind regards, VERA SANS SOUCI INN
