Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The check in person is RUDE! Very RUDE! If you ask her any questions she will tell you answers are going to be in a book inside cabin. WiFi is only at cafe and gas station, not in cabin. So to use internet you stand outside cafe area. Queen bed for 180lb 2 people are not comfortable. They are sagging in. They need new mattress. Rest of the things are good for cabin. Fire the checkin lady, put WiFi in all cabins and update mattress in your cabin!

Rustic. Romantic. Unplugged and peaceful. Biggest bang for your buck in Big Sur. Get a cabin with a deck on the river. You’ll have to make an actual phone call to reserve a cabin so you might as well ask for exactly what you want. This is not glamorous. You will not confuse it with Post Ranch Inn but trust me when I say if you want to experience Big Sur then this is where you want to stay.

OK, this place is rustic. They are cabins, and they are old. Our cabin was quite large, but the experience felt more like camping out. There are a few bugs. There is an indoor fireplace, but we used the outside fire ring. A small bundle of firewood is included, but you need to bring extra (and kindling) if you want good coals for s'mores. We had a big buck walk right past us while out at our campfire, and then a decent sized coyote pass through the yard. This was a great experience! The restaurant we used for breakfast, and the food was fantastic. We would absolutely stay here again.

We enjoyed a good night in a Ripplewood resort cabin. this morning we came across the street to their restaurant, expecting a standard eggs and bacon kind of place. Were we wrong! Homemade cinnamon muffins, delicious, omelettes, huevos rancheros, fresh fruit, and a potato side that is mashed potatoes with green onions and cheese. I would highly recommend enjoying this breakfast spot.

Excellent location, check in desk very helpful Nice rustic cabins on river. Isolation from others. Price very fairly exceptional for Big Sur. Close to hikes, redwood trees everywhere. Highly recommend

Great location; most of the cabins are situated along the river and it's lovely. We stayed in 2 different cabins. The cabins are definitely 'rustic' which is expected, but there's a difference between rustic/cozy and funky/uncomfortable. No rugs on the bare vinyl tile floors, furniture is a hodge-podge of stuff that doesn't really fit and looks like it was bought at a thrift store; couch/loveseat was pretty funky/dirty and in our first cabin was crammed into a space between the bed and the wall so you couldn't quite get into bed without squeezing through a small space. Lamps are falling apart (some dangerous loose sockets) and a mish-mosh of bulbs/colors, some working some not. Beds are queen-sized and *super* mushy/soft/bouncy. Woodburning stove barely worked with non-existent door/glass seals on it, so probably dangerous. Curtains are also a complete mix of non-matching styles that don't fit the windows (some home-made and too small and some store-bought and way too large), and all too sheer to block out any light (like the ones over the bed that don't block most of the light from the neighbor's porch light that was on all night!). They don't really make you feel welcome there - on arrival you're given all the rules, and forget about any special accommodations: We wanted to cut our 5 night stay down to 4 and asked for a cancel on the 5th day - we were still more than 72 hours from the last day so still outside of the 72hour cancel policy, but they said they'd charge us for the full night even if we cancelled - definitely not friendly, and probably illegal. Rooms were serviced daily, but they didn't replenish soap or shampoo even after 3 days. Oven trays are covered with foil when you get there, but ours was used and dirty! They didn't replace the foil on anything while we were there. The firewood they supplied was damp and wouldn't burn - I had to go to the local market to buy some that was dry. Cafe is 'OK' - decent breakfast and lunch, no dinner there. Wifi is available at the cafe, not in the rooms, and cell service is non-existent down by the river.

At one time this place could be called rustic, but now it is just old, musty and in disrepair. We stayed in cabin #5 and the floor of the cabin was so uneven (half the cabin floor dropped 6 inches in two directions) that we felt like were were on a boat sliding down one side then the other as we attempted to navigate the tiny space. If you love nature and are good with minimal amenities, I suggest you camp instead of staying here.

This is an affordable option for staying in Big Sur. We loved it, as it was nestled in the redwood grove & we were lucky enough to be given a cabin by the river. We loved sitting out on the deck. I loved waking up with forest wallpaper and the birds singing. We had a lovely, rustic stay. A couple of notes if you are booking: * Amenities are basic. You’ll find it useful to bring your own loo paper, soap, shampoos, etc. It’s not a hotel. * They supply towels, bedding & some basic cook ware, plates, mugs, glasses & cutlery. You don’t need to bring those. * There’s a shop where you can buy water, milk, basic food. We didn’t drink the water but it might be fine. * Be aware you’re in the countryside, so you might get a spider pay you a visit. * The drive down to the river is quite steep. You may want to stay in the meadow if you don’t like hill starts. * Very close to all amenities in Big Sur. But you will need a car to travel around Big Sur. * There are very few gas stations in Big Sur, so fill up before you come (one happens to be attached to the lodge shop though if you need it). * Food is generally expensive here, so go to a supermarket beforehand.

Cabin 15 holds up to 5 adults, but there were just 2 of us. Though we combed through cabin reviews we weren't sure what to expect. We wanted to stay for 3 nights and we (seniors) wanted to be comfortable, so we opted for more space than needed. It was a good choice, though having been there, next time we'd be fine with Cabin 14, next to 15, or with 6,7, or 8 by the river. (I've checked pricing since our trip last month - it's increased by 15% which is kind of wild.) Offhand I'd think 5 adults might find Cabin 15 "cozy," but 3 or 4 would be able to obtain community or privacy as desired. As others have noted, on 2 nights we were treated to deer, nearly in arm reach, at the back of our cabin near dusk. During daytime we visited hiking trails and we ate most meals away from the cabin, but we did make use of the kitchen. There's s full-size refrigerator, which is nice. But. The toaster toasted our bread on one side only, cooking pans (only 3 of them!) are used and of the most inexpensive type, and the oven looked rather dicey - fortunately we only used the stove top. If you plan to stay more than 1-2 nights, and plan to cook, bring some of your own kitchenware. And, if you care how your coffee tastes, bring your own Mr. Coffee style filters and ground coffee. The cabin is stocked with a couple of sad looking hotel style packets. Ditto for tea - bring your own if you care how it tastes. BTW, the office staff seems to rotate. Our experience was mixed, depending on who was behind the counter, but everyone was polite even when it was clear that a staff member had no clue about an answer to a question. (Don't be rude to the staff. It's not their fault they weren't properly trained.) Basically we came for the company (each other) and for the scenery, and were quite happy.

The most horrible experience with guest services Ever! The incompetent customer service person would not allow me to book because I wanted to stay in their cabin to attend a wedding. That is not allowed. You are only allowed to stay at Ripplewood to enjoy the beauty of Big Sur. NOT TO ATTEND YOUR FRIENDS' WEDDING.
