Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Rooms are spacious and clean. Monsur is a friendly and helpful host. We also liked the Indian restaurant downstairs and the perfect, family-owned breakfast place across the road. Very close to wonderful sights such as Goodrich Castle.

Well, it's OK, but not brilliant. I think the problem is that it lacks charm and though it is clean and tidy, it's a bit clinical and doesn't have the feel of being 'loved'; nor of being a pub that you would want to settle down with friends.

The food is similar, being basic but without flare and there are better places to dine in the area - try the Moody Cow at Upton Bishop or the Mill Race at Walford for example. Alright if you are passing through, but cold and without soul and, let's face it, you either have the talent for cooking ... or you don't

Response from Nicola C, Owner at The Crown at Whitchurch
Responded 16 Mar 2016
Good morning and welcome to the world of Trip Advisor - I see this is your first review. I have a fundamental problem with your words. The Crown is a mish mash of a 16th century coaching inn with Victorian extensions! No two walls are even, no floor levels are the same, no windows match. Its a great mash up and has been lovingly renovated by the family who live, breathe & sleep The Crown. Quirky charm is everywhere, from the well used Chesterfields in The Great Bar to the chandelier lights in the restaurant to the silver plated black and white photo of my parent's 1950's wedding in the Library bar. There are vases and milk bottles and decanters full of fresh flowers, church candles and tea lights sit side by side on the cadbury purple painted bar where if you look closely our cat called Anyway (must be said in a John Bishop accent) peers at you from beside the log burner. Loved? This place is adored. Clinical? Hardly. Please take a look at our website where you will see many photos - www.thecrownatwhitchurch.com You comments about the food - this sounds like a personal dig at one of my team of talented chefs - and so doesnt warrant a response.

Needing to meet a friend/client for a reasonably businesslike discussion in a comfortable, mutually convenient location, I chose the Crown based on the enthusiastic reviews since it reopened.

Extremely conveniently situated, just yards off the A40 and accessible from both directions and with a decent sized car park, it fitted the bill admirably in that regard. The bar is huge with plenty of seating areas, it was comfortably populated on a bleak winter Tuesday night when many village pubs were probably empty. Atmosphere was friendly and service fast.

The one downside was the music! Periodically, extremely loud music would punctuate the previous pleasant pub murmur. I'm not sure if it was a jukebox, I never saw anyone put one on, but as it was single tracks it may have been. However, the volume was absurdly loud, making conversation impossible initially, although the bar staff did turn it down when requested. It was just such an incongruous and jarring interruption to the otherwise pleasant atmosphere. I personally don't object to quiet background music, although my preference would be none, but this was anything but quiet background!

A nice touch was the lady (landlady??) who came round at one stage offering us a sample of the homemade chips, which were delicious and much appreciated. I'm sure this pub will be a great amenity for the village of Whitchurch and for passing travellers, but please sort out your music ;-)

Thank you Katie, for your review of The Crown Hotel, in Whitchurch. First my apologies in not responding sooner. I am pleased you found The Village Bar an ideal place to meet. On the other hand I am sorry the music on the Juke Box was to loud, i have informed all the staff to keep it in check during the Lunch period & the early evening r longer dependind who is in. up until 9.30pm or longer. The Juke Box comes on every so often offering what is supposed to be background music. I hope you will give us the benefit of the doubt & try us again.

I arrived here just after 3 in the afternoon and checked in. The reception is past the bar. It’s a bit basic.

I was shown to my room, if you are over five foot six you will need to duck.

The room itself was very nicely decorated and quite roomy. Although there is a low beam across the middle of the room which I hit on the way to the bathroom in the night.

I asked about breakfast but was told that no staff came in until 10am.

There is free parking here.

This place is very drab and in need of a lot of TLC. Arranged an early check in. On arrival boss had gone out with all room keys. Left stuff in car boot. Finally got key at 5 o’clock! Room okay. Went to Old Court Hotel for evening meal. We were told front door not open until 9.30 - 10.00 so use fire escape. Were booked for 2 nights only stayed for 1. Owner needs to concentrate on either running a restaurant/takeaway or a hotel as he clearly cannot do both.

Don't know what has happened to this hotel, as it was nothing like previous reviews. We booked on the strength of others opinions.

We booked for two night about a month ago, and checked there was a restaurant.
On arrival Saturday afternoon we asked about their restaurant and we were told they don’t have a restaurant at the moment and the nearest place to eat was 10 min walk. The walk wasn’t a problem, but didn’t want to have to do it, as there was no lighting on road.
And we were told breakfast had to take in the cafe over the road! The cafe doesn’t open Sunday’s!
We were also told we would get a discount on our meals at the Old Court Hotel but they didn’t know anything about any arrangement.
We had spoken to the Crown a couple of times before our visit but were never told there would not be food available.
Room was dated and we were woken at 5am by creatures running over ceiling and in wall cavity. Our room didn’t look like any in the published photos.
No WiFi in room, but there was in bar area downstairs.
Needless to say we only stayed the one night then moved on.
They are obviously updating this property, as downstairs looked ok, but we will not be going back.
Don’t go!! Very misleading reviews.

See more room tips.

I would like to thank the chef for a delicious meal. A perfectly cooked steak, amazing onion rings with all the trimmings. My partner had the seabass which also looked delicious. Although busy we were made to feel very welcome on the Saturday evening. Looking forward to our next visit.
