The Vineyard has been described as a temple to Californian wine. Just outside Newbury, about an hour from London, it certainly lives up to its reputation, and more. The cellar holds over 30,000 wines from the new and old worlds, as well as the award-winning estate wines of owner Sir Peter Michael. It is also celebrated for its contemporary cooking. Spacious contemporary suites, traditional bedrooms, an award winning spa and a private art collection to die for, make it the ideal venue for special events, weddings, and a delightful retreat for gourmands and the curious alike.

We picked the Vineyard for our first venture out in 4 months since COVID hit. It was our anniversary and we wanted to do something special, my husband chose it as he loves wine. The InsideOut restaurant concept really appealed to us.
I booked directly with the hotel, they explained their new measures clearly and I was happy to go ahead with my booking.

Check in was straight forward and we were soon in our room, the hotel and rooms are a little dated but very well kept. We stayed in a lovely Atrium Room facing the golf course it was very peaceful, there was no noise at all! Room 227!

We had drinks in the bar and dinner in the inside out restaurant, it was perfect, unfortunately it was a very wet day but they had the marquee sides up and it was warm and cosy inside. It doesn’t feel like you’re in a marquee at all, it’s very inviting. The meal was delicious all our dishes were fantastic, can’t fault the service they were all so friendly, attentive and helpful. The sommelier and bar staff were brilliant at advising on drinks and mixing drinks to my preference.

I loved the breakfast hamper and additional breakfast we ordered, having breakfast in room instead of buffet in the restaurant is a nice alternative. Check out was brilliant we were emailed our invoice to check, responded with authorisation to take the payment with our card we registered at checkin we did not need to visit reception on departure.
We really enjoyed our stay, I highly recommend a visit to this hotel. My only regret is we didn’t try the spa because I forget it was reopening the day we arrived.
Thank you for a wonderful stay.

I visited the Vineyard with a couple of friends for a relaxing spa day, evening meal and stay.

The spa was controlled booking of 2 hours booked in advance - this made it quieter but sadly the treatments were all booked up (note to self book in advance). The facilities were very clean and tidy and the staff very friendly and attentive when needed.

The bar and restaurant was busy and the staff were very friendly and attentive. We had a lovely evening meal and drink in the bar. Portions are small but very well presented. The bar is well stocked and the barman was very accommodating in making one of our party a special cocktail.

The suite (atrium) was very nicely decorated, it had a bath and shower as well as plenty of space to unwind. The bed was very comfortable and a good size.

Then came breakfast…. To say disappointed was an understatement - included in our room was cereal, tea/coffee yogurt and granola and a bread and pastry basket…. You get this delivered whether you want or not and to be honest there was a lot left over and seemed quite a waste. I relish a full English breakfast when I stay at hotels.. it’s part of the stay. There was no option on the al a carte (which you pay extra for) for a full English… so I opted for the Sausage and mushroom with brown Sauce… what arrived was literally 2 sausages on a plate… a handful of dry mushrooms and a bowl of brown sauce… if I was the manager I would be ashamed to serve this… I think the Vineyard need a re-think on their breakfast and allow people who are paying premium a better choice on their al a carte menu..

Sadly my lasting impression wasn’t that of the good fun we had… but of a dreadful breakfast.

Overall experience was good. 12.5% gratuity is a bit unfair when applied to very expensive wines. The service isn't improved for this. Pillows too soft and room service knocking on door for turndown at 7pm is bad timing for most people. The one thing that upset us was the 'sneaky' way in which you attempt to charge a room gratuity? Why? It is made to look like the restaurant gratuity until you look at the bill. Nasty taste left with each of us.

Absolutely superb dining experience. Feel pampered and waited on hand and foot from the minute you walk through the door. With a wine list the size of a telephone directory, you are spoiled for choice. Definitely a choice for a very special occasion. Food was exquisite and reasonably priced, but wine is expensive, if bought by the carafe. This can really push your bill up, as well as the 12.5% service charge. Tip - look in the back of the wine directory, where you will find more reasonably priced bottles. Highly recommended - probably one of the best dining experiences I have had, but be prepared for that bill. Dinner for 3 with wine £350+

The hotel bathroom was tired and dated, with non slip strips floating in the bath water. The pool water was cold and uninviting and the pool tiles water stained and looked old. The hot tub has broken and dislodged grating around it. No evening food was offered unless you booked into the restaurant. No afternoon tea available until the following month, even if you are a resident. We ordered a la carte breakfast (only offered to the room, due to Covid - but they ran the restaurant at night) - no upgraded breakfast arrived and we were left with the basic hamper. Very disappointed as this was supposed to be a special weekend for our 25th Wedding Anniversary.

The level of experience was unbelievable, and was definitively he element that stood out to me. They paid attention to detail, and made me feel very taken care of as I have a nut allergy. It was also a birthday trip and which they made extra special. Would definitely recommend if you want to be treated like royalty!

Booked this as a treat for my partner’s birthday. and stayed Sunday and checked out Sunday. Beautiful hotel, extremely polite, friendly and efficient staff, and our suite was well appointed and the bed linen was amongst the best I’ve ever slept in. We used the spa after check in (had to be booked in) and the pool area was clean, circular pool (water bit cold) with sun beds and towels around the periphery. Nice steam room and sauna and jacuzzi. So all was well until the next morning when we fancied a quick swim and steam before breakfast but the whole spa/pool complex was closed. The hotel was almost empty and we were told it’s closed all day Monday/Tuesday! This is an expensive SPA HOTEL! There was no other explanation given so at check out I complained as I feel that when you pay full price all facilities should be available up until you check out. Fortunately, the duty manager agreed and the outstanding balance on the bill was waived. This is a great hotel and would recommend but ensure you know which facilities are open.

So the moment we walked in I got the vibe. Wedding venue. Business conference place. Well done four starish hotel. But for me lacking in charm (except for the absolutely delightful gentleman who accepted our bags and found our dinner table when nobody was there – thank you).
This is so far from a five star hotel but probably a very decent four star one.
The restaurant lacked atmosphere and was freezing. Thankfully we both had cardigans or we might have frozen there (joking but it is distracting when eating that your knees are knocking).
Food however was good. Mr Fleetcat had the lemon sole which was pronounced excellent and the chocolate pudding which was wolfed. I’m vegetarian and the pea starter was lovely but the salad main failed the sweetness test (personal bugbear that so much veggie food is sweet – yeuch).
Breakfast was odd. An included continental included a bread basket and granola (never arrived) with a random selection of hot dishes at extra cost.
OK one night stop but would not come back. Sorry.

This was our first time back in at least 8 years. We stayed in a suite with a small balcony. The room was large and on two levels, a sofa area being in the lower area. The room was quite warm so had to have the balcony doors open for a while. Unfortunately couldn’t do this through the night as the road is quite noisy outside. You can’t control the temperature in the room as it is a standard temperature pumped throughout the hotel.

The bed was comfy and the bathroom large. Tea and coffee making facilities.

Our one observation that we thought was poor was that a turn down service was done, but the mugs we had used for a cup of tea in the afternoon hadn’t been cleared so were therefore not clean if we wanted tea in bed in the morning.

We had dinner in the restaurant (7 course tasting menu) which was fabulous. The only thing we didn’t like was the final dessert which was a fabulous chocolate dish, but had olive oil poured over it. Wasn’t to our taste!

Breakfast the following morning was good. A good selection of items to chose from.

All in all an enjoyable stay and won’t leave it so long until next time.

We were lucky enough to visit the Manoir aux Quatre Saisons last year, but can honestly say that this hotel is a match in standards at a much more reasonable price - and a lovely spa too. The Judgement of Paris wine flight was a brilliant addition to the Tasting menu (which I would highly recommend) - beautiful presentation, interesting and creative dishes, attentive service and spotlessly clean throughout. We will definitely be returning.

What would the cost be for a two night stay and wine tasting experience for two adults please.
Answer from TheVineyardHotel
Newbury, United Kingdom
Hi there, apologies for the delay in our response. The price would depend on what dates you wanted to stay. If you would like to stay with us on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th December in a Luxury double it would be £490 for the two nights on a bed and breakfast basis. At present due to Covid we are not offering wine tasting experiences. This may well change in the new year. If you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact us directly. Many thanks and hope to see you soon.

We had lovely food and wines were interesting and a bit different. Service generally was good so you'd be well looked after and there is an area of the restaurant you could probably take over entirely so it could be nicely intimate. Staying there was also very comfortable so I'd recommend it.
