We had a wonderful 2-week stay at La Châtaignerie with its lovely pool and beautiful mountain views. We arrived as a big family group of 21 people and took over the whole place. It is ideal for a large family group and each of our individual families was able to have their own kitchen space and then come together downstairs or outside if we wanted to eat/spend time together (which we did often). There is a supermarket 5 minutes away which is very handy for any essentials and a few larger supermarkets a bit further. Lots of beautiful villages to visit, markets, vineyards, and lovely walks in the mountains, it is a lovely area. Caroline is a fantastic host, always ready to help when needed but not in any way intrusive. The local bakery delivered fresh bread/croissants every day which was something we all enjoyed as well as the Paella man who came one night to cook for us all. We all enjoyed our time here and came away with lots of lovely family memories.

We stayed as a family of 20. The place is well appointed with everything you could want. The owners live adjacent and cleaned the pool every morning, and were available on site to assist or answer questions as required. We had a delivery of fresh bread every day. Its a short walk to the village of Sahors for the butchers and a cafe, and a 5 minute drive to Vernet les Bains for restaurants, shops, petrol etc. We loved our time here. The kids played in the pool in the day and played pool, boules, football, table football, games in the evening. We ate outside every day (running the gauntlet of all the wasps and flies - but that is the drawback of being out in the country), but there are inside dining rooms too. The rooms with their own little kitchen are good for those with small kids, but we did most of our cooking together and loved the fact that there was anything you could need including cocktail and cookery books to try. The place is so large that it never feels crowded. We headed out to farmers markets in the local villages and there was a music festival all week when we were there, so we spent a few evenings out listening to Jazz and local bands in the nearby villages. Walkers will find that Canigou Mountain nearby would provide a challenge 8-10 hours and 2700m high, but there are many hill walks too (with laminated packs provided by the owners to try out). Plenty of Medievel abbeys, walled towns and churches within a short drive. If you don't want to drive there are buses and bikes to hire. I thoroughly recommend this place.

Our family took the entire house for two weeks this Summer. Our experience at La Chataigneraie could not have been better from our first contact with Caroline and Bob to the last goodbye hug. This property is great for large groups and ideal for family gatherings. Not to mention the prompt personal attention to all our requests, the facilities in the house and the beautiful maintenance of the property. la Chataigneraie is a beautiful venue where it is possible to relax even with small children around as there is lots to occupy them there. And, of course, it is located in a beautiful part of southern France with so much to see and do between the mountains and the sea and further inland. Another legendary holiday for the family book! We were lucky to find you. Thank you Caroline and Bob

What a find. Winding roads up the hill and mountainside leads you to Sahorre, a quiet village in the Pyrenees. La Chataignerie is well located and great for families and friends. A great self- catering suite of rooms with supermarkets and shops down the hill. A lovely pool and outdoor area and plenty of places to relax with views of the mountains. Caroline could not have been more welcome and helpful. She certainly added value to the stay and living next door was extremely helpful for the odd crisis. It’s clean and nicely laid out. This was a great location a short walk from the village where there is a local restaurant but more importantly a great wine cellar from which to purchase the local wines and cider. Just great.

We took the whole house for a week with friends and family. I don’t think we could have bettered the accommodation, location or amenities. There is plenty of space to all be together, but also to have time to yourself. The area is interesting with plenty to do and many of our party of 25 plan to return. Caroline and Bob live on site, in a separate building, but this is a plus: they were on call when we needed them, it otherwise unseen. The advice and help we received prior to arriving, made everything go easily. I cannot recommend highly enough.

This is most definitely the best self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. A lovely, spacious, well maintained property, set in sizeable grounds. The apartment on the first floor where we stayed was clean, spacious, bright, comfortable and well equipped. A beautiful, quiet, countryside location, who could ever tire with looking out on the mountains with their ever changing colours through the day? A lovely pool to sit around in the sun and a large garden with fruit and nut trees to sit in in the evening and listen to the songs of the crickets and tree frogs. Caroline and Bob have literally thought of everything to make your stay a good one. From basic kitchen supplies such as salt, pepper, tea bags, washing up liquid, dish washing tablets, hand wash for clothes to a massive collection of books and DVDs, games and even an honesty bar with a variety of drinks and snacks. Plenty of tourist information and guide books and knowledgeable, helpful advice and suggestions from Caroline. Within easy reach of all the places you would want to visit, with pleasant walks from the property too. We had a hard time trying to fit in everything we wanted to do in this beautiful part of this region. An easy 2 hour drive from Carcassonne airport with hassle free and excellent airport hire car service from Hertz means repeated visits are definitely on the cards in the future.

This place was a jewel in the Pyrenean crown for our mammoth family holiday 19 adults 7 children 👶 all accommodated very well in this idyllic house and location The house and adjoining accommodation was clean light and spacious x having several separate lounges was good for families to have a chill out and snooze from the sun ☀️ the pool and gardens served us all well for fun and games Local supermarkets and surrounding villages in supply Sightseeing on the little yellow train very good too x we visited Andorra and picked up some cheap booze and perfume but the drive for me was best with lots of hair pin bends not for the faint hearted or those with vertigo 😊 I’d like to thank Caroline and Bob the on site owners who were there to help but not intrusive 👌our daily croissant and pastry deliveries went down very well with all ages ( 0 to 70yrs) Hoping to return in the future and really cannot recommend this place enlightened whether a large group or travelling couple 🎉🎉🎉

When I booked the whole Gite on line for a big family gathering (22 of us) to celebrate my 80th birthday I was not sure how it would work out. I need not have worried. The mountain setting was beautiful, the facilities are all of a very high standard and with good local wine at €2.80 a litre, a memorable week was guaranteed. Caroline and Bob worked enormously hard to ensure that everyone was happy, answered all our queries and looked after us all so well. A big thank you. Like other reviewers we hired Julia to cook a birthday dinner and one other as well as using the paella man one evening. Both were excellent as is the local Bistro in Sahorre, a lovely example of how so many small french restaurants used to be- and very reasonably priced. There are lots of things to do in the area for all ages, be they hiking, cultural, nature or sight-seeing. But the garden and pool are both perfect for relaxing. We had a fiercely fought boules competition and more energetic played badminton as well. In short the place is wonderfully equipped for both indoor and outdoor activities. our one suggestion for improvement would be to provide slightly wider double beds, now largely standard in upmarket accommodation, as and when finances permit. I have no hesitation in totally recommending La Cahataigneraie as the perfect venue for larger groups. We also hope, as a couple, to return as B and B guests s soon as possible.

Just back from a 2 week holiday at La Chataigneraie. We were a family group of 28 from age 10 to 89 and everyone agreed that this place had everything that any age group could wish for to make a brilliant holiday! (Which we had). Caroline and Bob have put so much thought into making your holiday here perfect. From the warm welcome to the pristine rooms and grounds and the I can only say "incredibly"well equipped kitchen, library and games room nothing is over looked. The sitting room and big screen were AMAZING! I'll get back to that later... the pool which is also pristine is fantastic. After 2 days there we pledged to find something (anything) that had not been provided and we failed! Miserably! The area around is beautiful with many attractions to keep you occupied when you feel the need to get out and about. The highlight for my kids were the rock pools just outside sahorre while my nephews loved the light show at the caves. Eus has the most stunning views. We ate at the Bistro in Sahorre a couple of times which is just a 10 minute walk along a quiet path where the food and service was excellent but what we really enjoyed was to stay in! Simply because it was so comfortable no need for driving along the mountain roads. We had meals delivered by a caterer recommended by Caroline which were delicious, easy to prepare and such good value for money. We also had the caterer come in one night to serve (and do the wash up) a 3 course meal for €20 a head €5 for children!! Ask Caroline about Julia the chef you won't be disappointed. Paella night with Francis was also a highlight. Finally what set the tone for our time at La Chataigneraie was our group arriving on our first night with 30 minutes to go to a really important hurling match ( you might need to be Irish to get this) there was panic all around to get the big screen set up and connected to a laptop which we had failed to bring. Caroline saved the day providing hers and Bob got it connected Waterford beat Kilkenny for the first time since 1958. The start of a very very great holiday! Amazing is all I can say and we will be back.
