Our popular guest accommodation enjoys a wonderful location in the idyllic Hampshire countryside. The Angel is situated on the Alton to Gosport Road (A32) being approximately 6 miles from Alton and 6 miles from Petersfield and dare we say it approximately 200 miles from the other Alton that is the home of Alton Towers! We are also within easy reach of the towns of Winchester with its 11th Century Cathedral (and incidentally the longest cathedral in Europe), Basingstoke renowned for its shopping centre and of course we are ideally situated for Portsmouth and Southampton with their regular ferry transport links to Europe. Locally the attractions include the Jane Austen’s House at Chawton, the Watercress Steam Railway at Alton, the Curtis Museum in Alton, Gilbert White’s House at Selborne and St Lawrence’s Church Alton.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

The restaurant and bar are sadly underwhelming with odd chairs stacked about the place and no ambience. The carvery meal was very poor. The vegetables overcooked, with bullet peas and a frankly inedible cauliflower and broccoli cheese that tasted sour and smelled of the fridge. In all, one of the worst meals I have tried and failed to eat, and for which they make you pay in advance. The rooms look like a value stay, so go ahead but eat elsewhere!

We had our wedding at the Angel hotel and had a very positive experience. Positives are- • staff are very friendly and accommodating wherever they can be. A real family feel. Great with wheelchair access and looking after elderly relatives. • Ceremony and reception room is stunning! Very modern and practical with a dance floor and small bar. • Food was delicious and we were given lots of options and flexibility. (Many compliments from our guests) • Affordable. They are able to offer different options to bring costs down and great with children as guests. • Lovely picturesque back garden for photos and grass drains well so even if it has been raining it doesn’t get muddy. Not so positives are- • the rest of the building could do with updating but this is a compromise you make for a better value wedding. • bit of an unpleasant smell in some rooms.

on arrival nobody was there to greet us or offer help to a table. when I approached a member of staff she was very helpful and showed us to the table that we requested in our booking phone call. The night was cold and I have very bad arthritis so asked if the fire was going to be lit and was pointed to the manger(she was sitting on a sofa looking well wrapped up) and she stated that they had no logs for the fire and I requested that the central heating might be put on and was told that it was on (when I put my hand on the radiator next to our table it was cold) Upon looking about the room I noticed a table with a large family around it all wearing their outer coats eating and drinking. Odd I thought but carried on and when at last we came to eat, after I had approached another member of staff, we were told that only two lots of meat were available as they had not received the third, all the food was on display and hot but after a short time at our table our food was cold as the air around it was also. The staff were very helpful at all times but the management of the restaurant poor is the word that comes to mind. We will not be going again!!

We stayed at the hotel with a group of friends. We were allocated a room in an annexe of the hotel. The room smelled musty and the bed felt damp. We returned to the hotel at 10.15 pm after a day out. The hotel was in darkness and the main door was locked and reception in darkness. We found an open door and then had to telephone for somebody to eventually bring our keys. The last straw was that we were overcharged for the room. When we pointed this out we were issued with a credit card refund. However after a week the money had not landed in our bank account. I telephoned the hotel then followed this with several e mails . Eventually after being fobbed off for 6 weeks we threatened them with legal action and only then did the refund appear in our bank.

Not the best. Room was cold on arrival although heated quickly when radiator turned on. Bed comfy and clean. Bathroom had a lot of dust on skirting as did the blue chair in room. Unable to use shower as hose was broken. Requested 2 vegan meals in advance but choice was not met. Food was tasty. staff friendly and helpful. Disappointed that "superfast broadband" as advertised kept dropping out.

The room smelt of smoke, as if it was ingrained into the fabric of the room. Old cobwebs behind the doors and furniture, mould around the bath. Comfortable bed and clean linen. Curtains made the room dark which I enjoyed. But, car park incredibly tight for safe parking during my stay. Contractors vehicles parked everywhere and had the engines running when no-one was in them. This lasted for about 1-2 hours from dawn and the same in the evening disturbing my sleep and others. From the very early hours(6am) commercial contractors vehicles being loaded with heavy objects literally right outside my room. The walls were paper thin meaning I could hear every sound no matter what the time. This wasn't very good considering I booked this hotel for a course I was attending and needed the rest and sleep which unfortunately I did not have. The breakfast was average and just about acceptable with no gluten free bread. The evening meal was expensive considering it was probably brought in and reheated. On a plus note the staff seemed pleasant and helpful. Overall, this hotel needs updating and lots of tlc.

The dirty nature of the front door gave us a clue to what was to follow. The shower area in our bathroom was home to a lot of mould and the bath panel cracked. There was a large stain on the bedroom carpet. Our friend's room was much smaller, also had a cracked bath panel and additionally a very lumpy bed. The staff however, were brilliant and extremely helpful also the food was good.
