A great week spent in what I imagined to be an area well off the beaten track in Portugal turned out to be a fabulous experience. Staying with Ken and Carole in their secluded several hundred years old farmhouse, albeit with mod cons including a good sized swimming pool, was fantastic. Their hospitality was second to none, meals were made using local and traditional ingredients with liberal quantities of local wines. They were also a mine of information of the walks and places to visit. Thank you so much for a memorable week Ken and Carole and not forgetting Graham my mate!

It's hard to imagine what more Ken and Carole could do to make our stay at Pomar Velho more comfortable, enjoyable, and bad for our waistlines! The guest house is a traditional farmhouse, comfortably restored and modernised. Breakfast is generous (that's a word that occurs often when I think of our stay), as are the pre-dinner drinks - Ken's has had a lot of practice at pouring the delicious vino verde - and the dinners. Carole went to a lot of trouble dealing with my rather tiresome dietary issues. There's an excellent arrangement with a local taxi driver for taking and collecting guests to and from the recommended local restaurants. Plenty of reliable advice on where to eat out, and places to visit. We were there in spring, a glorious time to enjoy the walks along dry-stone walled lanes into Spain. A beautiful, quiet area with plenty of history. And, Pomar Velho's unique feature - Graham, the dog, who provided plenty of entertainment!

I barely know where to start to extol the virtues of this amazing old farmhouse and it's charming hosts Ken and Carole. The location is remote enough not to be touristy but yet is beautiful , friendly and accessible to fantastic walking and pretty villages. From the minute we arrived we felt at "home". The house has been sympathetically refurbished and has all the character oozing from every corner but yet all the mod cons you require for a comfortable stay. Ken and Carole are perfect hosts lavishing all the attention and advice you need yet still giving you the space and quiet to relax as you choose. It's a fine balance but they have it just right. The food they prepare and serve is of high quality , generous and very tasty with the addition of home made accompaniments such as scrumptious jams. Those you like a little librations will certainly not be disappointed with the wines and liquors on offer, again some brewed by their own hand. Have to mention Graham the dog who stole our hearts, a lovely character. The area has several good quality rustic restaurants which Ken recommends and offers invaluable advice on menu choice. We chose a perfect time to visit in Spring when the wild flowers are at their best and the weather perfect for walking. I can honestly say that nothing is too much trouble and no question left unanswered. You can book here in the full knowledge that you will have a fantastic base from which to explore this fabulous region Big thanks to Ken and Carole for making us so welcome, our memories will last forever.

Actually, I was a bit disappointed to read the other reviews of Pomar Velho. I had thought that it was our delightful personalities which meant that Carol and Ken treated us like old friends, but now I realise it is another mark of their excellent hospitality skills to make everyone feel like that. They have renovated the house delightfully and there are lots of nice touches - on the day it rained we could have played backgammon, watched the television, read whilst drinking a glass or two from the honesty bar etc etc. Actually we went for a tour of the local olive press, and I wold recommend that too. Ken and Carol are a mine of useful information, always willing to help - we got picked up towards the end of a long walk when we couldn't make it much further & Ken sorted a taxi to take us to the local restaurant instead of having to drive. (Mind you, with such good food at their place, I would happily have eaten every night 'at home.' ) We went in October so only got one day when we braved the pool but we had to do it to play the game their delightful dog Graham has invented. If you go, and it is warm enough to swim, you will be initiated. The walks around there are great and if you are not into walking, there are lots of hilltop towns and villages you can visit by car. This is not a buzzing area, not that many tourists (but then maybe we were at the end of the season) and you go for the lovely mountain scenery, good food - in enormous servings, be warned - and to relax. Carol and Ken, add another layer of relaxation and hospitality.

Pomar Velho is the home of Carole and Ken who have lived in Portugal for over 35 years. They are great hosts and their large and comfortable house makes a good base for exploring this beautiful area, close to the border with Spain. The welcome is warm, the rooms airy with good bathrooms and the breakfasts and dinners are really delicious and made with local produce - some from the fruits in the garden (an old orchard). They really go out of their way to share their knowledge of the area with you, whether it is organising taxis to local restaurants, routes to some of the local archaeological sites, or tips for places to visit on your onward journey. The garden and swimming pool make a lovely place to relax at the end of the day. Lots of great walking and drives near by. Top marks to Carole for posting me a scarf I had left behind in our room!

Carole and Ken have lovingly designed and appointed the perfect retreat for a vacation of exploring the endless medieval villages along the Spanish border. The rooms are luxurious but in sync with the old farmhouse they restored. The breakfasts are feasts of fresh breads and homemade jams from the fruit trees that surround the property. The dinners are better than the finest restaurant in the area, plus they are served outdoors if weather permits under the stars and the citrus trees. Carole and Ken are also the most gracious and knowledgeable hosts. Each evening we would discuss our plans for the next day and we would reconvene in the morning where they would provide detailed maps, info and any other advice we asked for. They were endlessly patient with our questions and there if needed and not if we sought privacy. By the time we left 6 days later, they felt like old friends I will miss. Although we knew that we were just one of a long string of guests they have welcomed over the years of running Pomar Velho, we felt like we were special. We will never forget the week we spent in Galegos near the castle of Marvao.

Ken and Carol redefine hospitality. Rather than tourists turning up at a guest house, you arrive here to be treated as old friends. Whether it’s the perfect, varied breakfasts, the aperitifs on the terrace, the home-cooked suppers, all here is done as if for old friends. Ken arranged for taxis to take us around the locale, recommended restaurants and booked tables, and was an endless source of advice on things to do and see (and to avoid). When we left, he even gave us a map of Lisbon with a list of things to do and see once we arrived there. The house is a beautiful old farmhouse, standing alone among the oaks and olive trees of Galegos. Quite and isolated, you can lie by the pool and spot Bonelli’s eagles overhead, or you can wander up to the Spanish border along the route the smugglers used to use. We went in August, which was too hot, but Spring and Autumn must be perfect. Nonetheless, we had a wonderful stay, and would certainly like to visit again, to see our old friends Ken and Carol. Ohh,.. and Graham the dog, who apparently will chase a ball all day. Wonderful!

Quiet, good walking, interesting people and lots of places to visit enough to keep 4 of us occupied every day of our stay. Pomar Velho the accommodation was great and owners Ken and Carol perfect hosts. We will certainly visit again. This is a small comfortable Gest House with warm personal service and good food.

We recently spent a week at Pomar Velho, and it was like visiting the home of dear chums whom we had known for years! We were welcomed by nightingales singing in the garden and by host Ken bearing a local chilled white port – which he insistently pressed on us. It would have been rude to refuse! Pomar Velho is a large, ancient and solid stone building, which seems to grow out of the hillside. It has some curious architectural quirks, but is first and foremost a happy and comfortable family home. Our quarters were spacious and well appointed. We quickly settled into the rhythm of rural life in this remote part of Portugal. The walks were varied but always through delightful countryside. Visiting in May, we were very lucky to be walking along paths whose edges were densely populated by a huge variety of wild flowers, something rarely seen in the UK now. The bird life was very varied too. Meals and drinks were taken on the terrace under the sunshade, or tea by the pool in the shadow of a fig tree. The meals, whether breakfast, picnic lunches or dinner, were superlative. No two breakfasts were the same, but always imaginative and tasty, setting us up for our walking. The company of Ken and Carole at dinner was an added bonus, and the conversation was lively. Having lived here for over forty years, and being fluent Portuguese speakers, they have integrated completely, and are very much part of the fabric of this small hamlet of Galegos. Their take on all things Portuguese gave us an excellent insight into the history and culture of the region. Their passion for the city of Lisbon (where they used to live and still have an apartment), enthusiastically presented to us by Ken, informed our subsequent visit there. We returned home feeling refreshed and relaxed, having enjoyed some wonderful walking. A big thank you to our delightful hosts, Ken and Carole for making us feel so welcome and working hard to make it such a memorable holiday.

Pomar Velho was a very welcome sight after a long and hot walk....the pool especially! Carole and Ken were delightful and amusing. The rooms were airy and tastefully decorated , supper and breakfast were delicious. The following day it was rather hard to leave and my knee was a bit sore.... so my walking companions set off for Marveo and I enjoyed the delights of Pomar Velho a little while longer . It was bliss !
