Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Another fabulous stay. The team go out of their way to make your stay special. My husband has a swallowing issue and during a busy Friday night service, the Chef came out to speak to my husband, to make sure everything he was making was suitable. We were so impressed and everything was delicious. Can’t wait to go back!

Agreeing with what most others have written. It’s slightly shabby, which some people like. The food, the staff and the service are all really good. The setting and the view are brilliant. Salmon were leaping and they landing back on the water with a loud thump. All very magical.

Ballathie House Hotel is in a beautiful setting beside the River Tay. We were booked into room 25 for 3 nights. Unlike previous reviews, the room was clean & dust free. This room is side on to the river but has a reasonable view. However, the double glazing was very hard to open. The bathroom tiling could be fresher & the shower took ages to heat up. There is a roof light window that drips onto the floor in front of the wash-hand basin, after showering, making the floor wet & potentially slippy. I should add that the laundry room is opposite this room, but it didn't really disturb us. The loading bay beneath this room was only a problem on 1 day. It woke us at 6.30am & lasted for a good 15 minutes. All the staff are very friendly & helpful. The chef coped admirably with my many food intolerances. The pastry chef managed to make special desserts for me every night. Every one was delicious. I wish to thank her in particular. Most restaurants offer me a fruit salad or sorbet. So, to have a proper dessert was a treat. Breakfasts are very good, loads of choice, both hot & cold.

Excellent 2 days away at Ballathie even though the weather was rubbish!! The hotel is just a complete de-stresser. Service is very good. The breakfast is just excellent. Rooms are all good in the hotel. Whilst the weather was horrible the stay was just relaxing and a great place to chill out.

It’s difficult to rate this hotel as some others have said. The location is stunning and steady drizzle did nothing to lessen the magic of the surroundings: a majestic driveway that goes on forever, lawns sweeping down to the Tay, and the colors of autumn all around the tree lined paths and tracks. This is a typical Victorian country house: comfortable lounges with open fires and a grand fireplace. I had booked a classic single, traveling alone and feeling frugal, for two nights with dinner. This gave me a chance to unwind in some comfort but the room booking was with hindsight a mistake as the shabby chic decor (which I love) didn’t work well with a tiny single room. No bath in the bathroom, just a weak rattly shower. It just felt really dated and tired. The central heating didn’t seem to work and I had to pull the bed away from the wall to avoid rubbing up against the dead radiator in the night. An electric fire was attached to the wall which worked ok. Suggestion: go for the double even if you’re on your own and be wary of the word “classic”! By contrast the food was very good. It clearly aims to be haute cuisine, with the tasting portions and the variety on the plate, but it pulls its punches. Partridge was nice but overcooked. They don’t ask you how you want game or meat cooked. Duck was just about pink and lamb had the faintest blush. Touches like smoked butter (delicious) and amuses bouche tell of ambition here. Puddings were smart (ie: a cranachan style choux bun) and tasty. I stuck to a basic Cabernet Sauvignon from a pricy looking wine list and this was good enough. There are nice sherries and desert wines if you want to overindulge ( I did) and Michael the bar manager will recommend the perfect whisky for you if you ask him nicely (and he’ll tell you all about it too!). All in all it was a great experience and reasonable but not super cheap at 150 pounds DB&B per night for the lone traveler. Recommended.

Firstly, when booking using an Itison voucher, the receptionist was very pleasant, friendly and welcoming over the phone. She said she would be on duty the day we were arriving. Our bedroom had a lovely river view with private veranda. The grounds were beautiful. Everything was so peaceful. Dogs are welcomed but we had made other dog-sitting arrangements but next time we think we would bring them with us. Nothing was too much trouble for staff. Dinner was out of this world (paid for this separately) - worth every penny. Will definitely return.

We stayed in the Riverside suites which were very quiet and comfortable beside the River Tay. Dinner in the restaurant was superb - excellent service! Breakfast was traditional Scottish breakfast. The grounds of the hotel are extensive and the communal rooms are very stylish. We will be back!!

My partner and I stayed at the Ballathie House Hotel with our Fox Terrier for one night in late September. We arrived at the hotel around 5.00pm. It’s a beautiful Victorian country house filled with all the usual things one would expect (stuffed animal heads, antique furniture etc) and with lovely grounds leading to the river Tay. However our initial joy was quickly dashed upon arrival. The receptionist told us that we were not booked into the main hotel (something that was not mentioned to us when we booked), but instead we were housed in a separate block around 100 yards to the side of the hotel. Our accommodation comprised of a ‘chalet style’ lodge with a bathroom, lounge and bedroom. The décor was what I can only describe as looking like a care home..(but without the glamour). The steps and handrail leading to the chalet door was old, with paint peeling off..and to add insult, directly outside of our accommodation was a large wheelie rubbish bin. I was asked if I would like to bring our dog with us to breakfast…I said yes..if that’s ok. We were then told that we wouldn’t be allowed to take our dog into the breakfast room, but would have a table set up, in the main corridor…under the stairs for us. Once I realised this, I changed my mind and told them that I would leave our dog in the accommodation and have breakfast with everybody else. Upon departing, my partner went to hand in the keys, only to be told that there was an extra £10 charge for bringing a dog with us!...A £10 surcharge for substandard accommodation eh? I’ve been charged extra in other hotels (which I accept), but at least in those instances we were housed in the main hotel block..and not something akin to army barracks. This is NOT a dog friendly hotel (despite what the rhetoric says)…it begrudgingly accepts dogs..but puts many restrictions on this…AND charges for the privilege. Needless to say..I won’t be returning.

Just returned from a short golfing break in the area. Our second visit to this characterful property. Love its ambiance! Food exceptional and staff efficient, caring and friendly. Rooms clean and comfortable. You need to remember to hang the notice on the door handle if you wish your room cleaned. Unfortunately, we hadn’t been aware of this, but not a big issue for such a short stay. Looking forward to my next visit.
