Rude and abrasive reception staff. Wifi doesn't work pretty much at all - be prepared to wait 10 minutes to load each page. No room cleaning. OLD building. Double room is two singles jammed together. Yucky yucky bathroom. Nice location but spend your money somewhere else!

We stayed here some time ago.Huge cockroaches at the breakfast , flew over us while we are having breakfast. So disgusting! no body did anything about it. kitchen looked dark and very unhygienic.YUCK !Since that day I still don't feel like eating eggs for breakfast ! staff were rude and couldn't bother and the management seemed they didn't care. I was booking accommodation on Booking.com (my first time using this site) and I came across Hotel Sofia. I booked one the daily specials with free cancellation until 48 hours. Booking.com charged my credit card straight away. Then I realised I booked the wrong date and refunded the booking. Upon checking my credit card statement I noticed the was a...

We were after budget accommodation for our two night stop in Melbourne and this hotel ticked all the boxes. It's location is very central and all attractions are in walking distance. The meals at the bar are great. The only setback was that this hotel provides no parking space and public parking in Melbourne in the CBD is a shocker.

Paid cash every morning for our breakfast. Won't get a receipt. At departing day we were told we had to still pay for Saturday morning. Which was wrong. It was a different staff member who didn't know what he was doing or cashed in our money. Trying to call the hotel... Never any answer. Booking.com promised us refund, then decided...

I have stayed at this boutique hotel before and not had problems however on this trip there were a number of things that were not up to standard. Firstly our booking was not organised when we arrived, the hair dryer in the bathroom had wires hanging out the broken handle, there was absolutely NO WI FI at any stage despite...

An interstate couple I know stayed at the Sofia about three years ago. They reported it was shambolic. Recently another interstate friend stayed there, having chosen the hotel online because it offered all the usual hotel facilities and budget rates. I was horrified by her reports. She experienced all of the problems listed by the most recent reviewer, Bec. Worse...

Construction outside the rear room window, told they would not be there on the weekend and low and behold we were woken at 6am again...asked to move rooms but apparently hotel 'full'. Room has not been cleaned in two days despite asking for it to be... No one seems to ever be on reception... Showers water pressure ridiculously slow. Won't...

The hotel was close to Southern Cross Station, within walking distance of the city and trams, however the area had quiet a few 'mens' clubs'. Rooms were modern, clean and comfortable with an adequate buffet breakfast included. No Wifi included in the price. Good value for the price, but book something more expensive if you are looking for more salubrious...

This hotel is centrally located, and most of the other clientele were very friendly for my stay. Just be aware that you are in a dodgy strip-club area and there will be noise all night. My decent size room was well maintained and stocked by the happy cleaner, but the management seems to ignore the existing ancient frayed carpets and...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
