Perfect position for us opposite Southern Cross Station. Very helpful, polite staff who were always willing to help. Room was well appointed, bed very comfortable, dark curtains, no light able to get in at night, little to no road noise (we were on the 6th floor). Very clean bathroom. No negatives at all, would stay there again, highly recommend.

Booking through Qantas & using frequent-flyer points made the cost very reasonable, so this hotel was great value for money, but it was also good accommodation. Very quiet & comfortable room, shower water came out hot and strong (no bath in our room), buffet breakfast was really delicious. Located across the road from Spencer St train station, trams & the SkyBus terminal, this hotel is well-located for travelers.

Overall a good experience. Friendly staff, good quality rooms and good location. Would not recommend room 719 because the only window in the room looks directly across the hall to the elevator, giving other hotel guests a perfect view into the room.

Booked a king room for 5 nights around NYE and found it very disappointing: main downsides are small bedroom and bathroom and no attention to detail in terms of some aspects of cleaning. Ie. Upon our arrival there was hair on our bathroom floor and the carpet had fluff on it and had to ask for it to be cleaned, which is not what you feel like doing when you are tired and just want a clean room.

We were shown the next size room up and we agreed to lay the higher rate but then upon returning to reception to finalise the arrangements, we’re told this class of rooms were no longer available due to single night NYE revellers versus my 5 night stay. So it was disappointing to have hopes raised of the large luxurious room and then ultimately be returned to what we felt was a very small executive room.

On our last full day we asked for our room to be made up at 2pm and said we’d be out for 3 hours. When we got at 5:30pm the room was unmade. We called the reception and we were told that housekeeping had finished for the day so they just put fresh towels and emptied the bins. No attempt was made to even slightly tidy the blankets/sheets that were messily thrown on the bed (in anticipation of house keeping).

So it feels more like a boutique motel than a 4 star hotel. While the barman was great and the reception entry feels luxurious, ee will not stay here again and so unfortunately cannot recommend.

Solid choice in city center. Across the street from railroad station. Grocery in station. Numerous restaurants in the area. Average sized rooms. Old hotel that has been renovated. Reasonably comfortable beds. Very clean and quiet. The shower is different with the control away from the shower head. Breakfast had adequate hot choices, excellent fruit, but limited cold choices of meats and cheeses.

The best thing about this hotel is the location, it is also one of the worst as it is a very noisy corner and late into the night. The foyer exudes quality and charm however the rest of the hotel does not live up to first impressions. The room we had was small as was the bathroom. The best thing was the beds which was really comfortable. Buffet breakfast is included in the price however we chose not to partake after the first day as the offerings were quite disappointing. There is no barista or egg station. The day we went all the tables were left with dirty plates and cups. A single very harassed looking young lady was in charge of both cleaning tables and refilling the Bain Maries, cereal and juice dispensers etc. The walls are very thin so we enjoyed listening to tv program from the room next to our. If you want somewhere to stay for easy access to the airport/trains this is the place.

Great little hotel. Facilities and rooms are great for the size of the hotel (on the smaller side) The location is convenient nicely close to Southern Cross Station and Collins St but without the rush of those areas.

Staff are particularly helpful. In my interaction it was a busy time but they kept their nerves and smiles.

Fabulous Art Deco hotel in handy location with helpful and friendly staff. We had a great corner room that was spacious and obviously cleaned to a high standard. We choose package that included large room, late checkout, bottle of wine and $50 drink/food credit. Well worth it.

The Savoy has a good location in one sense: it is just across the street from a main rail station. The hotel is an elegant Art Deco structure. BUT:

There were no ceiling lights in the bedroom, and no floor lamps, only a small reading lamp on each side of the bed and some dim lighting around the wallboards. (Even if a floor lamp were brought in, there was nowhere to plug it in...) It was impossible to sit in the room and read in the evening. You had to go to the lobby or bar.

There was a limited drinks menu at Alexander Bar, and a limited food menu, no nuts or small snacks. Four days a week you could have a small breakfast here: Sat-Monday the only option was the $39 buffet in the restaurant.

Almost all restaurants in the neighborhood were closed Saturday and Sunday, some even Friday nights. The area is the Financial Center, and apparently there are very few customers outside regular work hours. Guests must eat in the hotel or take a taxi or tram to other neighborhoods.

Be careful with the “Master” switch next to the entry door, it turns off everything including plugs where you may be trying to recharge your phone or iPad!

Dear Purmamarca, Thank you for taking the time to review us. However, there seems to be a fair amount of incorrect information being presented in the review. The Alexander Bar is popular with locals and our guests for our range of carefully curated beverages to suit most of our guests. These range from local Victorian wines to non-alcoholic drinks, making the venue popular. Our beverage range has more than 30 wines, 10 beers and above 50 spirits to choose from. I am sorry to hear that none of these were suitable for your tastes. Further, our food menu has options from small plates to mains and selection of desserts and cheese. And yes, we do serve nuts and chips. Breakfast on level 2 is open 7 days a week and has daily buffet. In addition, we do have a small a la carte menu in Alexander Bar from Tuesday to Friday for guests who do not wish to have buffet breakfast. We are probably one of the few hotels who present two options for our guests. Melbourne is known for its restaurant culture and is known as the most vibrant city in Australia for its array for multi-cultural food availability. Should you have needed any advice as to where to go, we would have gladly helped you. Thank you for pointing out on the Master switch option in the room and general feedback about the lighting, we will take it onboard and make changes where necessary. Yours sincerely, Ram Bharadwaj Hotel General Manager
