Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Rooms were a very low standard, mould in bathroom, could hear other guests walking around from our room. Our room was not serviced (2-night stay) and the rude man at reception refused to give any reimbursement. NOT an enjoyable experience at all.

The front staff were so friendly and helpful! They have a little reading nook in the back of the dining area that is great for killing time, if needed. They also have laundry on-site for guests. The room was very spacious and quiet.

This was my first trip to Melbourne so I was a bit blind when booking my hotel. How pleased was I when I went to The Alto. It's so close to the Skybus terminal ( like 2 minutes away) and is opposite a tram stop. The staff couldn't have been more helpful to a lone traveller. An absolute winner!!!

For the money we paid, this hotel was disappointing. The carpets are dirty and in need of replacing and the rooms themselves are very outdated. I originally booked through their website and received an email saying that “ Full payment will be done at the hotel.”, I then received another email about 3 days before hand saying that they had attempted to take one nights accomodation off my specified card and it had declined. I then rang them and explained that I did not leave the money in the account as I was not aware they were taking one nights accomodation prior to arrival and the staff weren’t very helpful and I ended up just paying over the phone. Maybe need to look at the wording in your payment policy emails if it is incorrect. When we arrived check in staff were despondent and not very friendly. Overall it was fine for what we needed. Very close to southern cross station which was very convenient for us. Good location. Probably wouldn’t stay again. Have stayed in Melbourne many times and there is much better for the same value.

May not be a 5 star hotel, but certainly worthy of a 5 star review due to it's helpful staff; it's great location 2 minutes from Southern cross Station and right next to a tram stop for the free tram service; and its amenities. Just ideal for a family of four. Only thing that could improve would be if the apartments were a little bit bigger. However, having 2 full bathrooms in the 2 bedroom apartment we were in was certainly welcome.

Had rooms booked for February 2024 which were confirmed in October 2023. Just received an email addressed with incorrect name to advise they had been cancelled. No alternative provided. No courtesy phone call to explain. Very disappointed with approach and lack of customer service.

We were looking for a hotel within walking distance of the train station and reasonable. By ringing direct was less that Booking.com etc. The room, bed and shower area were all ok. The room has a microwave, kettle and kitchen area. There is a Coles/Woolworths less than a 10 minutes walk, if you wished to make use of the kitchen. Walking slowly, to reach the train platform for Sydney takes about 10 minutes. Certainly recommend for being central and reasonable.

Location, location, location. Right in the heart of Melbourne's CBD across Southern Cross Station on Bourke Street. Within Free tram zone and easy access to Trams # 86 and 96. Close to shops, eateries, bars and night life. Nice helping staff and comfortable clean rooms. However, the common areas like walking corridors seems dated for my liking. No worth mentioning views from my room's windows. I stayed in Room # 207.

Overall this was an ok place to stay, the rooms are acceptable, slightly tired, but clean. A few maintenance issues like one of our windows was broken and didn't seal shut and one of draws was broken. Aside from that the two big issues were 1. Location - on the edge of the CBD so be prepared for walking or taking trams 2. Noisy - tram and trains nearby so sleeping could be interupted.

Booked the Alto on Bourke after a friend recommended it. Was not disappointed at all. From contacting them by phone prior to make booking to ask a few questions, easy check-in, pleasant reception staff whenever we walked past to when we checked out in the easily hours to catch our flight back home. Caught the SkyBus from the airport to Spencer Station and walked the short distance up to the hotel, location is excellent. Tram stops right near by and the good old Exchange Hotel just down the corner in the same block. We had no issue with the room we were allocated. Roomy enough, great shower, dark curtains and quiet area. Small kitchenette also which had microwave, toaster, kettle, bar fridge and sink so you didn't have to use the basin in the bathroom. A nice touch also was they had a lounge area in the lobby where you could make coffee or tea, have a few lolly sweets and sit in the warmth and relax. We did not eat breakfast there so can't comment on that but we did see other guests in the dining area enjoying breaky. Would definitely stay here again.
