1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests....

We stayed here for a week and would choose The Shakespeare again. As everyone has noted: no lift (we were on the 4th floor), no a/c (weather was 31-33 while we were there). So why the high rating? The Shakespeare is perfectly located just steps from everywhere you want to go (7

Hotel with its own brewery. Residents get 20% discount on food and drinks. Only negative is the number of stairs to some of the rooms. Staff were very helpful. Excellent situation for exploring Auckland. Harbour is just 5 minute walk with vast array of restaurants.

I booked this hotel for its central location, we were going to see a show. The bar and restaurant were ok, and the staff friendly enough, but it was the room that was a complete letdown. The room was stuffy with a mediocre fan to try and cope with 29 degrees of heat. The fan

We stopped in because of the name, the look, and the claim as oldest brewery in NZ. We didn't stay here or eat here, just a quick beer that was good. Had a great chat with the bar tenders and they were very friendly.

The carpet hadn't been cleaned. Here's a lovely example of that.
Mould in the fridge.
A used town is left in the room for us.
Even more mould.
It's fairly close! But we took a taxi to the pier!

I parked a car overnight in a nearby multi storey carpark. I had read bad reports of the Wilson group of car parks (in addition to locals warning me off!) so I used the one that you access through a hotel (struggling to remember name right now!) also in Albert Street... Not sure it would take a campervan. Charges for cars overnight reasonable ... as long as you collect car early next morning! Street parking charges were expensive by comparison...

"All looked much the same, with no real views, but take your own hand basin plug!"
"When the new rail link has been built"
"Do not stay here. It's filthy."
"Ask for a quiet room, away from the Albert St if possible."
"Top floor is probably quieter if you don't mind the climb - we had Room 9 which was good (only about 10-12 rooms in total)."
