The Shakespeare Hotel Auckland

Traveller (114)
Room & Suite (31)

1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests....

I hate to pick on a place when it simply is what it is but this hotel is really bad. The rooms are ridiculously small and uncomfortable with no AC and no elevator so when you have to check out early and there is no staff to help, you are lugging your two week packed suitcases up

Dear valued guest. Thank you for staying with us. We are sorry to hear nothing pleased you whereas a large number of valued visitors and guests from worldwide enjoy NZ's iconic hotel setting in a heritage classified building that is so rich with history and character, renowned for boutique accommodation rooms, the oldest microbrewery pub on site, and a historic restaurant that is so unique offering one of the best food and drinks in town in ambience, live kitchen and gallery, and above all our central location in Auckland CBD. Shakespeare Hotel Auckland is celebrating 120 years of serving Kiwis and tourists. We understand the key issue appeared about the refund due to personal preferences. As advised earlier, since your booking was made on a third party agent website, it was to be processed by them only not the hotel. However, in order to assist you and going the extra mile, our Manager has recently arranged the refund processed for you. Apologies for the inconvenience caused if any. Warm regards, The Shakespeare NZ Team

I stayed here on Friday for 1 night. When I got in the lobby, I was a bit confused where is the reception. Apparently, the bartender is the hotel receptionist😅. In the initial booking, I asked for a quite room as I read the review there is a bar on the ground floor so it will

Two senior ladies and no lift - had to be out the door at 7.30am and one fell down six of the carpeted stairs. Chipped bone in ankle, lots of bruises. Lucky not worse. Nobody there to help. Oh well - the restaurant was very good for dinner the night before.

The carpet hadn't been cleaned. Here's a lovely example of that.
Mould in the fridge.
A used town is left in the room for us.
Even more mould.
It wasn't a king, but there was ample space for two people

Is this harbor area the one cruise ships (e.g. Holland America Line) arrive at and depart from?
It's fairly close! But we took a taxi to the pier!

I parked a car overnight in a nearby multi storey carpark. I had read bad reports of the Wilson group of car parks (in addition to locals warning me off!) so I used the one that you access through a hotel (struggling to remember name right now!) also in Albert Street... Not sure it would take a campervan. Charges for cars overnight reasonable ... as long as you collect car early next morning! Street parking charges were expensive by comparison...
