Stayed for 2 nights as a last minute booking that morning. The only room available was a large suite and the price wasn't too bad considering. The room was excellent with a large lounge and separate bedroom that could be closed off if you wanted. The large windows in both rooms let in loads of light. The bed was huge and very comfortable and the bathroom also large with a big bath and large walk in shower. All of the bedding and bathroom linen were of a high quality and made for a very comfortable stay. The staff at check-in were great and the breakfast had a good selection and on the whole was pretty good. The location was great for anything you might need in downtown Hamilton. Highly recommended.

Room was clean when we arrived, we stayed for 2 nights but no house keeping either night. Parking is an issue, first night we got free parking but the second night all parking was taken and we had to park at the casino. Staff were hit and miss, one lovely lady who checked us in but other staff weren’t friendly. You could walk in and out past staff who would let acknowledge you.

Received the most awful customer service! Absolutely appalling for a 4.5 star hotel. Facilities and rooms were okay, the room was tidy and had all the amenities. Arrived early before 2pm to check in and paid for valet parking and receptionist that checked us in was welcoming and assisted us with no concerns apart from no mention or discussion re the terms and conditions of valet parking. Half an hour after check in we left to grab some food my car was still in the main parking when we arrived back at around 4pm. We had dinner reservations and requested for the car to be brought up at around 6:20pm, when jumping into the car to leave for dinner, IT WOULD NOT START! Prior to this we had driven from Auckland all the way down with a couple of stops along the way and had no problems with the car. We then told this to the staff out front to which she said that the valet driver had an issue with the car and said she would get the duty manager. After explaining what was going on to Warren (Duty Manager), he did not know what to do or say to us. After asking for help he only then offered to check the camera footage to see if they were at fault for this but was unable to find the footage of the car entering the valet parking area! No time stamp on our valet ticket at all or for their own record which is very unhelpful for situations like this, the only footage found was the valet driver bringing the car up at a poor angle. NO further resolution or compensation offered as we told him we missed our dinner reservation with family and he said he could call a taxi and told us to pay for it! He then asked if we wanted to call AA but at our own expense, we asked him to at least call AA - he then told us AA would be arriving in an hour. We then explained to Warren again that Anne out front said the valet driver - Dean was having an issue with the car, we asked why this was not communicated to us, to management or noted down on the valet card about the car having issues. During our discussion with Warren, Pare the other receptionist at the time spoke for him in a rude manner, she also did not offer any resolution but only pointing the finger back at us saying it’s our car and told the team not to touch it! We expressed the displeasure that we paid for a service and got back a problem with no compensation or solution offered. Once the conversation pointed back to Warren, Pare then left the front desk and went to speak to the valet driver who drove my car without us going to speak with him all together first. After the valet driver had finished moving another guest’s car he then finally came up to us and told us that he had no issue with the car. At this point we were very confused as one staff member said otherwise. I then asked to speak to both the staff members. When clarifying what had been said to us the valet driver looked confused and the staff member who said he had an issue clearly was trying not to say something to avoid putting any liability towards them! We then expressed to Warren that the situation was stressing us out as we needed to drive back to Auckland the next day and he replied back with “you are stressing me out”. HOW RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL coming from a duty manager to tell YOUR CUSTOMERS that they are stressing you out. We did not pay $250+ in this economy to stress you out. In my years of working in customer service/hospitality I would not dare to say to my customers that they are stressing me out! That is not how you communicate or treat your customers how embarrassing for the company you work for! This whole situation was handled poorly and could have been avoided from the start if the manager and staff members acknowledged the issue with the car when it occurred and had it noted down on the valet ticket, offered solutions. If you decide to book this hotel our advice is to take extra care and get anything and everything explained to you verbally and in writing as they only point the blame back on their own guests which clearly shows on the other reviews on google and with no resolution or compensation mentioned or given. A refund for the valet parking would atleast have been something substantial to us however we received 0 compensation and this has put us off staying at this hotel again or recommending it to friends/family.

We reserved three rooms for our family. Arriving after a long drive we asked at check in where to park. We were informed that parking was available at the side of the hotel in the private marked bays. We parked in one of the bays marked with “Reserved for Novotel”, walking back to reception where we were attacked by a chap in a hi viz, telling us we were “ parked illegally” . We explained that we simply parked where we were instructed to, and in the bay marked for Novotel. The response was that the bay was marked “Novotel Hotel “ and not Novotel and was actually reserved for “more important guests”. The chap continued to be aggressive and inappropriate, threatening us with legal action. We were amazed and wonder how this hotel will survive a competitive environment. While a manager did intervene we did not receive an apology.

Easy check in & lovely friendly staff. Room had food under the chair from previous guests & power points on 1 side of the bed didn’t work. Fridge not very cold & terrible dining experience in the Restaurant. Disappointing for Novotel as ruined our Xmas Day evening meal. Breakfast was good but probably wouldn’t stay again

We recently stayed at the Novotel Tainui for 1 night to attend a wedding. After returning from the reception in the evening, we were getting ready for bed. On pulling the sheet back, there was a large mark on the sheet near the pillow, which seemed to be a sticky gum-like substance. We made a call to front desk (unanswered) and then room service (also a 40 minute wait by the way) to address the issue. We then had to get dressed again and wait for housekeeping – who dealt with it quickly and remade the bed for us. They expressed their regret and apologised. They assured us this would be followed up as it was not a good standard. On checkout the next morning, no mention was made from staff around this housekeeping issue, nor the interruption to our stay (and the feeling that our room had not been setup to a clean standard). I brought up the matter and received a quick and insincere apology before being presented with our parking charges. Whilst we were happy the matter was dealt to – and the housekeeping lady that attended clearly was unhappy with whomever had made up the bed with dirty sheets, we were not happy with total lack of remediation at checkout. Paying what we did for a single night, an insincere apology really didn't cut it. To have such a response from the staff member at checkout was both insulting and completely unsympathetic. To add further insult to injury after we sent feedback, we were offered a free breakfast 'on our return'. Since when does a future discount remediate poor service? I raised this again and the hotel disagreed with any kind of cash recompense. This could have easily been satisfactorily sorted by comping the parking but they managed to make it worse. We won't be back. Hotel is tired and shabby and our floor smelled of Ammonia. Note - Housekeeping response and communication was excellent. It's a shame the same couldn't be said for those whose role it is to be frontline customer service.

For our last night in NZ we splurged on an Executive Room with king size bed. These rooms are in the newer part of the hotel so they're very modern and well appointed. Lots of marble and timber accents. The bed was super comfortable with a good choice of different pillow thicknesses. The staff at the hotel were also friendly and approachable. With the hotel being located in the centre of the city it makes walking around easy. However, the bathroom could have been bigger for an "executive" room. I wasn't overly happy with the position of our first floor room facing the car park below and building across the way. Ask for a river view room if you can get it. We noticed that the door to the room didn't self-close properly and I had to really slam it shut so the latch held. I think there's been some movement in the building which caused this as there was a large crack in the plaster next to the AC vent in the room.

The decor was beautiful! Extras like handcream and chocolate were gorgeous. The service was great. Room service meals were great. The river view was pretty. Would definitely recommend this hotel. The only negatives were the uncomfortable pillows and the nearby local beggars. The beggars of course were not the hotel's fault but, there were so many dodgy people nearby, on our short walk, that it created an unsafe, depressing atmosphere. Definitely not good for Hamilton nor NZ tourism.
