Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A nice hotel with comfortable room but disappointing in the finer points: light switches poorly placed, very cramped toilet/shower and very limited TV channels (no TV One). Breakfast was a disaster - full hotel but only one staff member who was overwhelmed. On the plus side, reception staff were pleasant and plenty of parking.

The location is not the best as it’s in a a business/retail area away from the seafront. Room in need of a good clean! Cobwebs and ceiling fan with an accumulation of dust/dirt. Damaged walls and wallpaper, bedside lights in accessible and misaligned. We had booked an executive studio which for some reason came with hand rails in the shower?? After a long day travelling from Wellington it wasn’t what we expected. Bed was comfortable though. Poor room but thankfully only for one night!

You cannot fault the service here. Just wonderful! If there was an 11 out of 10 on this platform then I'd give that to this team. We had a wonderful evening event in their conference room too. On the downside? The gym isn't really, umm, a gym - its a running machine. The rooms are clean but a little dated and its the only hotel in all the world which doesn't number the rooms by their floor number. Eg; Room 413 is on level 3 LOL. Would I stay here again? No but that is because I'm a 5 star kinda guy and this hotel is more a business class one - but they do that well ....incredibly so. Stay here :)

RACIAL DISCRIMINATION is alive and well at the Plymouth International. My family and I have just spent the last few nights at the Plymouth International and everything was fine until our dinner last night. We had a very unpleasant encounter with one of the owners (which we didn't know at the time). We ordered dinner in the hotels bar area and we ordered "Prawns" as one of our meals. When our food arrived, in front of the entire bar she questioned whether that was our dish (because it was $45 meal) for no reason at all apart from our outlook and the colour of our skin - BROWN. I guess we are not the type of people they want in their hotel. She not only questioned the waiter serving us but made an even bigger scene by questioning the lady behind the bar whether that meal was ours which of course she confirmed. It spoilt our whole night and our entire holiday. We travel a lot and am happy to say that this treatment is few and far between but sadly still exists. She offered no apology and instead sat at her table drinking her champagne with all her arrogance and carrying on as if we were privileged to be in her hotel. What a sad life you lead when you think its ok to treat people this way!! Definitely won't be back and ruin another holiday.

Response from Darrin Muggeridge, Owner at Plymouth International
Responded 12 Jul 2023
We were disappointed to read your comments posted online and hurt to think our actions were totally misinterpreted. As hands-on owners of the hotel we like to observe and support our staff at all times and remember this particular evening quite clearly as unfortunately we had junior staff operating without the usual senior restaurant supervisor. We are extremely sorry we have inadvertently caused you offence and or embarrassment when we attempted to ensure all of our guests received the hospitality we strive to offer. We are very proud of our diverse staff and customer base and numerous cultural events we host at this property. I certainly would have welcomed the opportunity to speak with you directly either on the night or the next day to convey this to you in person. Please accept this as our personal apology and invite you to call us direct if you would like to chat further. Managing Directors

Building exterior looks newer than it is. The interior gives big clues that this place is old and tired and would definitely benefit from a healthy dose of TLC. Broken Air conditioning system, affecting numerous guests in multiple rooms and the front of house staff couldn't care less. A small oscillating fan was placed in the room. As a rather ineffective solution. On-site restaurant " The Orangery" deserves a mention and gets a- nod for quality of food(sadly some of the staff - and their lack of Customer Service skills lets it down! The silver lining? They are allowed to turn their Air conditioning unit on when there are guests seated in the restaurant!

Pet friendly and clean hotel however it is a bit outdated. Some of several issues I found were wallpaper is peeling off, door frame not properly well and ceiling paint is peeling off. May stay here again if no other options available

Excellent hotel. The service and amenities were good. The pool and hot pool were a hit. The staff were friendly and very helpful. There was ample parking. The pool is a heated salt water pool. We were there only for one night so did not go to the restaurant. However the bar staff were very helpful. The bar has a good selection of beers.

Definitely dated. The more expensive rooms have apparently been updated but we chose a cheaper room. Good sized shower. Lovely big mugs and plenty of tea bags. Friendly, helpful staff in reception. Only problem was the noise both nights with restaurant guests leaving. Our room was over the car park. I'd picked a mid-week stay to minimise this but it didn't work!

Room Tip: Try a room on the other side from the car park though they may be the more expensive ones.

It was our second time to stay at Plymouth International Hotel. The room was clean although it was dated. Facilities were good, a good size pool and a small room for gym. We tried the breakfast and the in-room service. Food was good and fresh. We would like to try dinner at their restaurant in our next visit. Reasonable price. It is a good choice for family holiday in New Plymouth.
