Manager-owned Backpackers, env. 2km outside of Te Anau, on the Road to Milford Sound. Quiet, clean, fully equipped kitchen, nice lounge with wood fire and mountain view (huge windows down to the ground), enough space for everybody, free carparking in front of the hostel, free WiFi, transport-service by car (pick-up/drop). I slept in a Double Room in Bob&Maxine's private house:...

This place was more than just a "backpacker". Maxine welcomed me and introduced me to other guest on arrival. I instantly felt comfortable and felt like coming "home". Bob was also helpful giving me advices on what to do in Te Anau. Ask Bob for local walks ect. He is the right person to ask! Thank you Maxine for taking...

It might have been some quite time. Yet, me and my friends accommodated in Bob and Maxine few years ago. We weren't a "bed and breakfast" kind of people, nonetheless, we had a great time. As we signed up to walk the Milford Track we found Bob and Maxine backpackers. The room was spacious, especially for backpackers like us who...

i stayed here on the way to Milford and loved the hostel. The fire was going when I got in so the place was lovely and warm, there was fresh fruit provided for free, the wifi was really fast and free washing (dryer costs $5). The hostel itself was really open spaced and well laid out, clean and homely. On...

Bob and Maxine were very nice and friendly. I had stayed for three nights and that was my favourite and most comfortable backpacker that I had stayed during my travel in South Island. It is spacious compared to other backpacker. The bed was clean and everything was tidy in the building. I loved to sit around the fireplace. It was...

Needing a place to stay in Tea Anau enroute to Milford Sound, we decided to check out Bob & Maxine's. Their hostel is listed in BBH, a directory of NZ hostels. Before our arrival, I corresponded with Bob about availability and he was very responsive. On arrival, we discovered a large property with stunning views of the mountains and the...

We decided to give this backpackers a try after the good reviews we had seen. We checked that it was open as we were aware it was nearly out of seasons. We arrived at 18:00hrs and before we had even pulled the car up on to the drive 'Maxine' came out and said 'can you not read... The sign says...

We had the FULL sign up for a very good reason; I was in hospital! These people failed to see the very obvious sign & came in anyway. Maxine explained in a calm & rational way that we were closed for a night or two. They left. I'm at a loss to explain their weird bizarre reason for attempting pay...

This hostel is a little away from the lake, but with a nice farm view that you won't want to missed. Bob have maintained the hostel very well, keep checking on everything to ensure all in good shape. It is too clean and comfortable to be call a backpackers hostel, I would rate this as a homestay instead. You seldom...

New Zealand is full of great hostels, but Bob and Maxine's place stands above almost everywhere else that I've seen. As in many areas of life, small details set certain places apart from others, and Bob and Maxine have overlooked no small detail is crafting a simply excellent place to spend a night (or two weeks), as I did in...
