Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My somewhat out of date GPS actually led me to the exact address of the Art Hotel. As I arrived after office hours I had to obtain my room key from a "safe box" but only found that by making a phone call to the owners who gave all relevant details. My big mistake was not to request, on booking, for a ground floor room. The Art Hotel is a nineteenth century building and has steep narrow stairs. If you're no longer youngish and strong (or your luggage isn't light) getting up them is like climbing Mt Everest. Once in the room it was elegantly furnished with what you need. The bed was soooo comfortable, it was easy to sleep late! The Art Hotel is only a few blocks from the city centre (and shops, if that's what you want/need). In the opposite direction is the Cataract Gorge, a great location to picnic or just wander through the park.
There's on-ground parking, but I found it a bit squeezy as BIG SUVs filled their entire spaces. If you have a small vehicle and can manage it, take an end spot so you can get out of the car without damaging the paint on your or other vehicles.

Staff was lovely and very helpful. Hotel room was small and cosy, had the essentials - comfy bed, bathroom.
Bathroom was found a little unclean, once arrived there was hair on the basin and makings on the bathroom floor.

Had good access to two carparks and hotel was located in a good location, could walk around the whole of Launceston from where we were located.

Walls are paper thin, I could hear the couple next door... and the busy road outside on a Saturday night.

The ‘mini bar’ fridge was a little dated but worked. The kettle looks a little dated also. Would be good if they could update that.

Overall good experience for the value.

From the moment we first enquired and booked to leaving this facility you are made to feel welcomed. The room was well appointed and the bed very comfortable. It was quite. It is an easy walk to the mall and offerings of different restaurants.

We stayed here for two nights in April. The owners were very friendly, the room spacious and pretty, and the location was close to everything. However, the sound proofing from the floor above was appalling. We could hear the floor boards creaking loudly late into the night and in the very early hours of the morning. We have no idea what the upstairs occupants were doing but they seemed to be constantly moving around during their waking hours. It made it very difficult to get any decent sleep.

We spoke about it to the owners after the first night who seemed surprised. Having look at reviews on other sites we can see that previous guests have had similar experiences. The owners told us they believed it was the sound of the previous couple moving out who had been staying there for three months. Needless to say the second night the noise was just as loud and frequent. On both morning we woke up exhausted and it had an impact on our visit to Launceston.

If you choose to stay there we suggest you ask for an upstairs room or a room without any noise from upstairs. Without the noise we would have gladly praised this hotel more but sleep is so important and crucial, particularly when you have days full of activity. Hopefully the owners can sort out the floorboard issue as there is much to like with this hotel.

My friend and I stayed for 3 nights in January, 2020. The Art Hotel on York was really clean, well laid out and with all the charm that its history shows.

We had wonderful treatment by the manager who was really accommodating.

The rooms were really well appointed, tidy and the beds were really comfy. Linen was clean and crisp - a great overall experience.

There are stairs to traverse - this is a historic building without a lift. So, if you're not good with stairs, ask for a room on the ground. There's a few styles of rooms to choose from.

You can aircondition or open windows in most rooms. That's a nice change.
Beware: the cafe is no longer operational so there are no breakfasts supplied but the Cuccina Cafe is just a block away - the food and coffee are OK.

Overall we loved our stay as a base for Launceston and beyond day trips. A must is the Lavender Farm, a walk around the towns historic buildings, the gorge and other little historic villages nearby.

Enjoy

I requested a quiet place when i booked and received a response that they can accommodate my request. Still i got a room upstairs right next to main road York st. Fri night traffic kept me up past midnight with people speeding and large trusks.
I also did not get any text or email about check in procedures as i booked via jetstar website on the day of travel and rushed for the night flight. When i arrived at 9pm, the reception was closed and i was locked out of the hotel. Had to call the emergency # twice for them to give code to keybox which they said they texted me. Would be ideal if you could ensure we receive the text by emailing us as well or even calling or requesting a call back to confirm we receive it. I can assure you i didnt get any text and standing outside alone on a cold wet fri night and no one answering the phone was a scary experience.

Don’t let the location of this place scare you. It is just off the edge of the CDB and close to where a busy arterial road comes into town. But once you are in tucked up in your comfy bed in this lovely hotel, you would not know what is happening outside. Had a great night’s sleep.
The location is actually one of its advantages – close to some excellent pubs, coffee shops etc for food; Cataract Gorge for some fascinating engineering and local history, and that road out the back usually takes you to where you are headed next.
Reception staff are very helpful. Housekeeping are magical – whatever you ask for is no trouble. On-site car parking was tight but more than adequate.
But the best part of this hotel is it’s own vibe – it’s history, the art on the walls, the funny little nooks and crannies – it was a great place to “come home to”, each night we were there.
Thanks,
Cate

From the minute I first contacted Art on York.... Tony was brilliant. I regularly need accommodation in Launceston and was looking for somewhere comfortable at a reasonable price. The room I was given made me feel right at home.. what more could someone want when regularly needing accommodation. Thank you for your hospitality and I will be booking again!

The bed was nice and firm, very comfortable, probably the comfiest hotel mattress ever!
It's a quirky little building, but the corporate queen was small, looked at the carpark and was very noisy with road noise, music, the front door slamming and the creaking of neighbours stopping me sleeping. For the price it was clean and dressed well. Kettle cable was too short to plug in easily, needs updating.

I agree with all the other reviews, this place was very nice.

My room was quite small, but had everything I could need, including a door which opened into a little covered area, I'm not quite sure what the point of that was, but it was nice to have the extra light to come in too.

The lady on reception who checked me in was very helpful with her city map and a list of places for me to look at.

Highly recommended.
