Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hotel's Favourite
Magnificent stay in a truely old world Hotel! Felt privileged to spend our time in the well kept and presented charm of the 1847 era Colonial Hotel! It’s a credit to the friendly and helpful owner who takes so much pride to maintain such for travellers to enjoy! Easy walking distance to shops parks hospital etc and we could leave the car on the electric car charger…what an added bonus. Whilst we didn’t use the gym many were seen to be making good use of it. The 3 Steps on George restaurant attached to this establishment offered a diverse menu with many great choices.

The rooms were very nice and spacious for 2 people, we also got connecting rooms with our friends which was really nice as we could move between the rooms and hang out in each other’s rooms. The only issue was the lights in the bathroom would flicker on when we wanted to use it.

Very nice hotel, connecting rooms with our other friends and lots of space. Careful if you have dust allergy because it’s a little dusty. Very quiet and peaceful, and picturesque. Only thing is that the bathroom lights are very bright and flicker when you turn it on.

I really liked how the rooms were set out so we could walk between rooms and see our friends. The beds were really comfy and the area is not too loud. The bathroom lights flicker every time you turn it on though and there was not a microwave. Overall good hotel and I’d like to stay again

The cornflakes and garlic pizza were amazing, along with the garlic bread. I am looking forward to coming again. They even lets us have the garlic bread for free. You also get cereal in the morning for no extra price. There is a lot of variety of foods to eat at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Our experience in a One-Bedroom King Apartment with Sofa Bed. We arrived to a warm local welcome from owner, Dale. He shared some history of the place, and directed us to the pool at the gorge. The Colonial’s main building is an old school - a centre of Launceston family memories. The hotel itself has outgrown that and our suite was in a newer multiple-storey building. Very nice and modern fittings with a few flairs acknowledging the historical origins. It’s in a good location at the South end of George St - walkable to food and most of the attractions. The room was serviced daily and was in good repair. Lots of light from the windows. Words from the kids: 1. The beds were nice and comfy, it had a kitchen where we could cook and a dining table to eat on. Basically it had all the needs for a regular house. 2. The hotel was one of the best place I’ve ever stayed because it was big. Dale was nice. The Labradors were adorable and they had a fridge.

Friendly stuff, great location which everywhere is walking distance to city and shops. The environment is nice too. Have upgraded to the room with balcony. Love the view from the beautiful balcony and the classic buildings structures. Will be back again for the Autumn color scenes.

This hotel is well-located and the staff are friendly. We had a negative experience for two primary reasons. First, the room was horribly musty. Old carpeting and drapes throughout seem to have become moldy and, even with windows and door wide open for an hour and then an ozone treatment by staff, it still gave one of us a bad night and nasty headache and stuffiness next day. Staff registered the issue but did not apologize or offer any recompense. Second, the hotel is building an extension on an adjacent parcel. Huge jackhammer noise from 9 to 4. But banging and clanging started before 8 am. The hotel really should notify prospective guests in advance. We were located reasonably far away but the works were very loud throughout the property. Overall, this place (at least the wing we were in) is basically a middle-to-low range motel with very dated decor. Lamps in room were bare bulbs in sconces with only one working bedside lamp. When asked about this, desk staff said “they are trying to decide what to do — get shades or change lights”. Meanwhile, guests are stuck with unbearable glaring bulbs or very little light. Not worth the price but, if you choose it, would definitely wait a year or more until construction is done and then ask to see (smell) room before checking.

Thank you for your review billkapra, Our guest comfort is our main priority and I am sorry we didn't meet your expectation on this occasion. At your request we did provide the air purifier as you didn't want any deoderisers. Had you requested a room move or lower wattage bulbs we would have accommodated you. We work closely with our local building company, as we are in the beginning stages of construction with no major works started as yet. and assure you they only work in business hours between 08.00am and 4.00pm. But welcome your valuable feedback about notification. I hope you enjoyed your onward journey to Coles Bay on our beautiful East Coast, and the rest of your holiday in Tasmania. Kind Regards, The Colonial Team
