We booked our stay at The Sebel as a last minute emergency as we were planning to travel around northern Tasmania for our anniversary, but 2 days before our trip found there was not a single rental car available, so we had to base ourselves in Launceston and go on tours. The 1st half of out trip went smoothly but while up at Lake St Clair, Brisbane (where we live) went into COVID lockdown so everyone that was from that area also had to go into self-isolation. We couldn't get hold of the Tas Dept of Health for advice so we returned to Launceston as planned (not knowing if the Sebel would even take us). When we got there (masks on), the staff were so wonderful, got us up to our room, and we ordered Uber eats (most restaurants in Launceston close at 8.30pm but you can still get delivered food). The next few days, the staff were so friendly and helpful, left us bags with clean linen and towels, coffee, tea, anything we needed. We cannot recommend the Sebel highly enough. We were even welcomed with a lovely bottle of local red wine for our anniversary. We will definitely be going back there when we return to Launceston. The room was spotless, nice balcony for us to enjoy cheese and wine (while we couldn't go anywhere), very convenient to many tourist attractions (once we could get out). Did I mention great staff.

We stayed just one night before flying out of Launceston. Our room was very generously proportioned with kitchenette, separate bedroom and sitting area, washer/dryer. We asked for some butter and salt/better so we could cook breakfast and these were provided without fuss. We arrived on Christmas Day so parked on the street in front of the hotel, which was free and convenient.

The city is quite compact so easy to navigate on foot, and the reception helped us find a place for dinner on Christmas night, at non-exhorbitant prices, which we much appreciated!

All in all, a good stay.

The Sebel is located about a 10 minute walk to the Central Business District in one direction and a 10 minute walk to the harbor in the other direction. Both areas have many great restaurants to choose from. Our room was a spacious two-room suite that was very comfortable with a large bathroom. Parking is located in an attached garage (they do charge for parking). This was a great choice for our one night visit in this city.

The team at the Sebel Launceston do their best to raise the experience to a four star standard, however the tired, worn out feel in the hotel rooms, combined with a general lack of pride and standards from owners/managers, undermines the team’s positive attitude.

For what this hotel is, the charges are very high. Looking at other hotel offerings in the region (and I did when the reality of our room sunk in), there seems to be a number of stronger value propositions.

Our room was tired and worn, blinds had massive gaps, letting light through. Worse of all, there was a weird, unclean smell in the room that we couldn’t put our finger on and did our best to ignore.

The fridge was empty of mini bar offerings, another chip off the experience. There was a note offering the ridiculous explanation that this experience-undermining measure was in some way linked to a covid health initiative.

The strongest proof point that the hotel had given up from a customer experience point of view was when we got a welcoming letter which referred to two complimentary bottles of water and a “special treat”. The special treat wasn’t a cookie made by a local Launceston baker, or a couple of pieces of Tasmanian fudge - something that would build the brand and add a true sense of welcoming or warmth. The special treat was… wait for it… four starburst lollies and a mentos (see photograph). This is not a joke. Four starburst lollies and a mentos was the “special treat” provided to guests to welcome them. And so, the bar was set for the Sebel Launceston.

The restaurant in the hotel is another matter, it offered a great experience and I gave separately reviewed it, giving it a good score.

I recently stayed with 6 work colleagues for a series of business meetings.
The hotel itself met our requirements with good service, and clean rooms and facilities.
However ,the quality of food and service in the Bluestone Restaurant was well below standard, with our main steak meals (Scotch Fillet) being returned to chef (majority fat and gristle). If it wasn’t for the waitresses we would have walked out. Unfortunately service the next morning for breakfast was not much better. This was very disappointing as previous stays resulted in excellent feedback from visitors.

We stayed in a lovely light filled apartment at the Sebel. It's in a perfect location - the two restaurants we visited were within a 5-10 minute walk and the city centre is a short stroll away. The hotel restaurant is also great and has a nice vibe at night. Excellent and friendly service. We'll be back next time we are in Launceston.

Located close to the heart of launceston the rooms were very spacious, clean and comfortable. Limited parking is available in the carpark next door for $8 per day.
Restaurant was acceptable food was well presented but menu limited.
Staff were helpful and friendly and happy to help. No concierge services so had to cart bags to room.

Lifts were a bit small.

The Sebel really is the perfect spot to base yourself in Launceston....close to the shops and restaurants but still nice and quiet , comfy and spotlessly clean.

We booked a twin room for a long weekend getaway because it was comfortable and central for a tour of the Tamar Valley wineries. When we arrived a miscommunication from Qantas Hotels ( we had booked through) meant that the room wasn't ready but a quick trip to reception had us upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite with no fuss whatsoever! ( thank you Susan :) )

There is a fantastic restaurant onsite too if you don't want to go out in the cold (and rain - it is Launi after all!). We had delicious cooked breakfast each morning of our stay and its obviously a popular spot with the locals too as it was always busy.

Overall, it was just a wonderful stay - exactly as you'd expect.

We stayed here before and after doing the Overland Track. It is one of the pickup/drop off locations for the Tasmanian Walking Company, so very convenient for the early start.
We had a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom suite which was modern and well equipped, including a kitchenette and laundry facilities. The spa bath was fantastic on our return from 6 days of hiking.
The In-Room dining comes from the restaurant downstairs and was delicious and generous.
The location was a couple of blocks from the new riverfront area in one direction and the main town centre in the other.
We would certainly stay here again.

I will admit to be quite fussy and was not at all concerned making a booking at the Sebel having stayed in several before. To say I was underwhelmed is an understatement.
The room it’s was described as a one bedroom spa suite. It was clean but the decor was so outdated and clearly worn. I’m still trying to work out why there was a full length mirror in the seperate toilet and beware that house keeping enter your room even if you don’t put the tidy room sign out. Given I was there on business this was somewhat annoying. I’m all for water conservation but the 4 minute shower request was interesting.
You don’t need to worry about finding your access card to make the lifts work as they just work anyway.
For some strange reason there was no minibar (COVID strategy) but there was tea/coffee available.
The only thing I cannot fault was the restaurant and quality of the food. It was outstanding. Pity I didn’t get to try other dishes as the concierge staff didn’t bother to swap or inform me the menu had changed. There were several issues with concierge and they were a less than hospitable or informative about anything that was available. I got more information and friendly assistance from my rental car employees. Arriving on an early flight my room was not ready (no issue as I knew the checkin time. I wasn’t expecting to be sitting in their restaurant (a few metres from the desk) and not advised several hours later my room was ready just after my arrival. Someone had rung but no message left as to who it was. Parking was reasonable at $8- per day.
Certainly won’t be recommending or staying in any Sebel establishments again.

What’s the best way to get from the airport to your hotel?

Hello, Karl, by taxi is around $35 and takes 15 mins. There is also an Airport shuttle bus for $15 that drops off at our hotel. It meets every flight and operates from directly outside the terminal exits near baggage claim.
