Love the renovated rooms, very well presented, really friendly staff and very comfortable bed and the wood fired pizzas downstairs were great, we'd be happy to stay again next time we are in Ballarat and will look forward to it.

We thought the hotel was lovely, the decor very tastefull, and rooms clean and spacious The car parking facilities were dissapointing as we were not told about the short cut through to the back of the hotel.

The place is a bit of a rabbit warren with poor signage but more of that later. As there was no one at reception and it was a group booking, we sought out someone to check us in. We were met with a rude and abrupt staff member. We were initially directed to the wrong floor so our pass keys...

Situated in the heart of Ballarat opposite the Gold Exchange, this Hotel offers great accommodation and good food. A lovely period building with a beautiful Lace adorned verandah on the front. Saturday nights can be a bit noisy as this area appears to be the party place in the town, but overall a great place to stay.

A Ballarat original. Well located. Good parking. Rooms modern airy and spacious. Service was excellent and there is a great choice of places to eat both within the hotel and surrounds. Reasonably priced. I would recommend for a stopover in Ballarat.

Magnificent building. Reflective I imagine of the wealth once associated with Ballarat. Visiting the city for a couple of hours. decided to drop in and have a look. What a reward for effort. Magnificent interior with a variety of rooms laid out for dining. Next visit may well have a meal. Had a craft beer from Geelong called Furphy. Tasty...

We loved reading your 5 star review - thank you Headframe. There is an enormous amount history surrounding the hotel. It is said that Peter Lalor himself addressed the troops from the first floor balcony before they set off to fight in the Eureka Rebellion. A nice hotel with a brilliant location and easy parking. It was across the road from the Art Gallery and Old Stock exchange and had an obviously popular range of cafes and restaurants. Staff where friendly and helpful. Only negative was that the room we were given was an internal room and did not have windows ):

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Ballarat's second oldest hotel, the original George Hotel building was erected in 1854. The George Hotel is located in what is known as one of Australia's most important historical streets and is opposite the Art Gallery of Ballarat, walking distance from Ballarat's Visitor Information Centre and a few doors down from the local cinemas. Over the past 3 years the hotel has undergone a major refurbishment to bring its hotel style rooms, including some apartment style accommodation, to a four and half star standard. The hotel is now also home to the Ballarat RSL with memorabilia displayed within the hotel. Newly refurbished bars and dining areas now operate seven days and at the rear is a new upmarket lounge which operates weekends for guests and discerning patrons with strict standards. One of Ballarat's most popular meeting places, The Lane offers a street cafe and alfresco dining, alongside the Lane Restaurant (popular with foodies) and Heritage Bar & Restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. ... more   less
