We arrived at the Tolarno Hotel in Kt Kilda around 11pm Monday night. We were greeted by the receptionist who was very helpful and pleasant Check in was a breeze and shortly after checked into our room Very Retro style furnishings in the rooms and foyer area including a heap of groovy paintings in room and hallways. Room was a...

Stayed at the Tolarno Hotel, St Kilda and to be honest this hotel is seriously punching above its weight. To start with the rooms were quite expensive been similar to the Sheraton in Melbourne and this raised my expectations. The room was small and the bathroom minuscule, you definitely couldn't swing the proverbial... Cleanliness was ok and that's all! Bedding...

We loved our visit to Tolarno. We had a great room at the front of the hotel with a very green outlook and a balcony which we love in hotels. The hotel decor is funky and loaded with art. The room was very well appointed clean and fresh. We found the staff polite and helpful and more than willing to...

We stayed here last week. Don't be fooled by the arty vibe they try and give off. This is quite possibly one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at. The smell in the rooms is enough to make you sick. The bathroom was mouldy. We ended up staying two more nights at the Prince Alfred hotel due to...

So let's be clear, this is not a Hilton or Raffles. This is a place of character & flavour & history... & of course art - lots of art! In the tradition of the late Hotel Chelsea in New York, you don't stay here for the luxury. You stay here to be a part of the colourful history - the...

Thanks to the other Trip Advisor reviewers who gave this place such a good wrap - I followed your advice and discovered my new go-to hotel in Melbourne. The Tolarno is certainly quirky, with out-there modern art on every vertical surface and many fun mid-century details in the rooms and corridors. But what I appreciated most was the generous size...

Corridors and the art seem to be the only thing boutique and cute. The room was old, the shower was filthy with mold and a droopy shower head, the mini bar was too expensive ($6 or $7 for a muesli bar?), the room looked like an 80's hotel that had a very budget makeover and it's really showing. For business...

I travel to Melbourne for business several times a year. Tolarno is my home away from home. I have been staying there for about three years now. It feels like a comfortable pair of old shoes. The staff are always friendly and helpful, the rooms are always clean & well cared for. The thing I like about it the most...

Two girlfriends and I stayed here..it is a quirky hotel with a warm feel. The walls on all floors are lined with bright artwork, which teams beautifully with the coloured walls and black carpet. The room was decorated well with quality furniture and a great kichenette. We stayed in a front room with a balcony facing Fitzroy street. It was...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once an art gallery, cafe and private residence of flamboyant Melbourne artist Mirka Mora and her husband Georges, the Tolarno Hotel has always been a creative space in St Kilda. The tradition continues at Tolarno Hotel. In a salute to the charismatic Mirka, the hotel’s walls and halls are hung with striking artworks by emerging and accomplished artists, 150+ works in total including a number of Mirka’s – guest’s often comment that it’s like staying in an art gallery. Today our 4 star hotel awards 3 major student art prizes via the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), Monash University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the yearly winners are exhibited in the hotel foyer for 12 months. Many of the artworks in guest rooms are prize-winning student paintings; the remainder are works by prominant local artists. Combine these striking surrounds with our friendly service, well-appointed rooms and suites and location in the heart of St Kilda’s dining and entertainment precinct and you have a stay like no other. With trams just a 30-second walk from our front door offering easy access to Melbourne’s CBD attractions, shopping, restaurants, events and business precinct, you’re connected to everything the city has to offer. ... more   less
