Ideal sea-side location at the end of the main street (Esplanade) towards the peninsula where we could walk to the historic old pier and ex whaling Fyffe House. Stunning view of the Ingals' Bay with Kaikoura range on the background. The room we got was clean but too dated and lacked lighting (visited a few years back). The shared bathroom... More

Really good food, but typically the service was only good. Staff where friendly, but I'm guessing understaff as they where too busy attending to many tables to really serve any of them. The food was excellent, I had the Pork and it was fantastic. The salad was fresh, the chips home made, and the pork cooked perfectly. I'd go back... More

Falling asleep to the squawks of seagulls didn't bother me at all. Our room had a wardrobe, two twin beds with a ton of blankets on it, and a sink. The beds were ridiculously squashy so it felt almost like sleeping in a hammock or bean bag chair. The showers were down the hall and simple but clean! The toilets... More

I have stayed twice, once in an en suite room, once in one with shared facilities. The price is cheap for Kaikoura, but a good bit more than you would pay in a less touristy spot. The showers in all are superb - lots of water pressure, no temperature fluctuations. The beds are clean and comfortable, the breakfast plain and... More

An old, historic building with great views across the bay, clean, comfortable beds, lots of towels and modern showers (very clean shared bathrooms). It is on the waterfront but no beach. The restaurant downstairs is excellent with very fresh fish and crayfish (book for dinner as it is very popular). Breakfast is simple & self-service - cereals, yoghurt, fruit, toast... More

The view, the food, the service all top class, old hotel. Character oozing out of the walls, clean, comfy beds and great staff. A veranda you can eat breakfast, wile away the time peacefully listening to the waves lap on the shore, smell the sea, hear the sea and the busy multitude of folk downstairs enjoying all that glorious food... My stay at the Pier Hotel was a fantastic experience, the hotel has all of the old world charm you would expect of such a fabulous historic hotel, it is very clean and modern and it is a great testament to the people who run this establishment, the rooms are beautifully appointed, clean and modern for all tastes

The view..fantastic. snow topped mountains, sea and seals! Ate both nights, meals good. Rooms basic but comfy enough. Constructive criticsm....needs some sort of bedside table/cupboard. There is room!! Had to get up in night for water from the lounge breakfast room. Pet hate: drinking water out of thick mug. Why no glasses? Then as no table, had to bend down to put... More

We would not have normally booked this type of accommodation but Kaikoura was busy and we loved the fact that in the hotel there was a restaurant with the most beautiful view and there was another across the road which were both excellent. The price we thought exceptional for a hotel room with breakfast included. Yes, its not the latest... More

The Pier was a late choice for our trip south to Tuatapere. It's old school in that the rooms are sans en suites but it was big and the beds comfy. Breakfast is complimentary but the meal we had in the evening was excellent and the service friendly and helpful. A laid back place and I'd definitely stay again.
