Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were especially pleased with our stay here in late December 2022. Mick and Karen are such warm people we felt very much at home and loved that everything was tidy and clean. Breakfast was delicious! Location is very good and the views from our Dolphin room were spectacular.

Wow! was our amazing view from the Whale Room in this superb accommodation. Snow capped mountains to the left with a turquoise sea. Our en-suite room was spacious with a very comfortable bed. It was spotlessly clean. The room had a kettle for tea and coffee with fresh milk in a fridge on the landing together with home made biscuits. Robes were provided for use in the hot tub. We appreciated the wine glasses as we sat in the glazed area admiring the view. Our delightful hosts Mick & Karen very helpful in suggesting restaurants & places to see. We enjoyed an excellent breakfast with fellow guests discussing our plans. Highly recommend Nikau Lodge.

Having seen the previous reviews I was expecting to be impressed and I was. We stayed in the Dolphin room and it had a great view. The hosts were most welcoming and helpful re booking a meal for us at a popular local restaurant. Breakfast was great and all in all it was a pleasure to stay at Nikau Lodge.

We came to Kaikōura for the dolphins & whales. Due to the wind we had to rescedule our trips. Our host was really thinking with us how to do this and what to do in the meantime. He suggested Fyffe House and the museum because of the special exhibition about the earthquake in 2016. That was very interesting. Also the dining suggestions were great and we lived the green lip mussels and the crayfish! So we had a great time and at the end we did swim with the Dusky Dolphins!

Fantastic property with amazing views across the bay with snow capped mountains as the backdrop. Mick and Karen were perfect hosts, very helpful with things like making restaurant bookings. The rooms are very well appointed and the Whale room which we had gave great views. Micks full English breakfast was noteworthy in size and flavour and kept me going till evening! Breakfast at the huge table allowed adventures to be shared with the other guests. The bathroom was supplied with a range of toiletries and there was a regular supply of home cooked cookies. Highly recommended. Thank you.

Wonderful personal welcome from Karen and Mick. Fantastic views of beach and their lovely, restful garden. Mick’s breakfast was great and we particularly enjoyed sharing a communal table with other guests and sharing experiences. Mick went ‘the extra mile’ by changing our flat tyre on the Sunday while we walked the peninsular trip which was very kind and a great help. Thoroughly recommend Kaikoura and Nikau Lodge as a place to stay.

This was a lovely bed and breakfast with stunning views to the mountains in the north. Our hosts were extremely welcoming. Breakfast was beautifully cooked and we were able to use a sheltered garden to sit out. It’s a short walk to town but uphill coming back! There is secure guest off-street parking. Strongly recommended.

This establishment was wonderful from the moment we met Karen at the reception to the time I shook hands with her husband Mick on our departure 2 days later. I shared a twin room, which was spotlessly clean along with the bathroom and the bed was extremely comfortable. Each morning we had the full English breakfast which was one of a number of options, it was well cooked with proper sausages. Karen was very helpful with advice on the local area as to where to eat and book tickets. I would hesitate to recommend the Nikau Lodge to my family and friends as they would be well looked after by Karen and Mick the proprietors.

The staff were very friendly and informative about the surrounding area. The bedroom had comfortable beds and the shower was simple to use. The breakfast provided was from an excellent menu. I had their big breakfast, a hard act to follow. A residence that would be a difficult to beat.
