Abel's Harp is a small vintage style hotel and licensed wedding venue set in five acres of beautiful Shropshire countryside. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with fantastic views. All rooms are en-suite and individually themed. We also have individually themed glamping cwts (Welsh for huts.) There is an on site restaurant, bar and gallery. It is a relaxed and quirky hotel and is an excellent place to stay if you want to visit Welsh Pool, Shrewsbury, Ludlow, Church Stretton, Powys Castle or to walk The Stiperstones or Long Mynd. We also specialise in bespoke weddings particularly in vintage, festival and country style weddings where parties can benefit from the land, views and creativity of the hotels design. We have three licensed ceremony areas one inside and one outside in our courtyard garden as well our hillside pagoda with panoramic views. Our food is a mix of dishes with a quirky twist, we like to think we have something on our menu for everyone. Our afternoon tea is also a real treat with its handmade cakes and biscuits

Absolutely disgusting, avoid at all costs! We went as a couple hoping to have a lovely relaxing 2 night stay. When we arrived the outside area was extremely untidy, the tables had overflowing ashtrays filled with fag buts. On entering the premises we were greeted by the General Manager who asked us to wait in the lounge and then he would book us in. The leather sofa was ripped, there was a really awful smell in the building and the hotel was cluttered. Our understanding was the decor was ‘quirky’. This was more like mess. We were booked in, given keys to the external door and room which was the Callow. The rules for our stay were given and in no uncertain terms were told that it was his home and that the door is locked at 10pm . There was an emergency mobile number we could call between 10pm and 10am but was NOT to be used to call at 4am for a chat or to ask for more coffee!! We made our way to our room and noticed the floors were very creeky, which we just put down to the age of the property, which was fine and expected. On entering the room we noticed how tiny it was and dark. The bed was a small double, extremely low to the floor and the windows and frames were full of damp and looked rotten and there were damp traps placed on the sills…..the rooms felt and smelt damp!!! The bathroom was tiny, the shower was electric and we only saw one towel and the lighting was very dim. We had a cream tea booked and was told that there were two tables made up and we could choose either one as other guests were booked in too. In the whole 34 mins in the building, we saw no other guests arrive!!!! We are no snobs but there was absolutely no way we were going to stay any longer. The General Manager was no where to be seen after providing the cream tea, which wasn’t eaten and without saying anything we both looked at each other and left the building leaving the room key on the table. It was just so awful and really upset us and we spent the afternoon looking for different premises to stay in when we should have just been enjoying our time away. It was such a shame as we were really looking forward to our stay at Abel’s Harp and the photos looked great but didn’t take us long to realise that the photos are either staged or very old photos taken. Just wish we had taken photos now but couldn’t get out quick enough!

We arrived to Abel’s just past 3:00pm, greeted by the owner Andy. After check-in we were advised although we had missed the allocated slot for our cream tea, once we were settled we could come and collect the items. Our room ‘ Feather room ‘ was at the end of the hallway with a view of the side footpath. The room its self was cute, decor across the whole hotel quirky but enjoyable. Pieces of furniture that reminded me of grandparents in the early 90 s and beyond. Pieces of history. The en-suite bathroom was pleasant, 4 towels provided and a bath mat, more than sufficient for the night. The bed, for us was very uncomfortable initially however, we can only compare to our memory foam. In saying this, we had a peaceful nights sleep with no disturbances. The neighbours were a little noisey (not the owners fault ) and as you would expect from a 400 year old building the floor boards creaked which added to the authenticity of the theme. Surprisingly the hotel was very warm and at no point did we feel cold despite the drop in temperature. Andy ( the owner ) was very welcoming, friendly and engaged in conversation telling us about the history of the building. Fascinating. The food was incredible, we opted for the bruschetta starter ( fresh, full of flavour, we only wish we ordered two ) burgers main, meat quality was incredible, and the chips were lush. Pudding my husband opted for millionaire cheesecake. I personally couldn’t finish my dinner the portions were very very good, I would rather leave a bit of food than finish my plate and want more. We used the hot tub which was lovely and relaxing with views over the valley, having no where to change at the hot tub would be considered a bad thing, as getting out on to stone it’s tricky to get dressed, my husband and I weren’t bothered by this added to the entertainment of getting out in 1c weather. Safe to say it was freezing, and our cheeks hurt from laughing. Upon returning to the hotel after the hot tub, we relaxed in the Lounge with a cup of tea and a few beers. The atmosphere was so relaxing, I generally wanted to sit in my PJs with slippers, it felt like a home from home. Check out was smooth and simple, followed by lovely full English and feeding the alpacas. We will be returning, even if it is just for the burgers and more stories of the hotels history.

We booked this trip away just for the night for our anniversary and I must say we were pleasantly surprised , upon arrival we were skeptical as we chose the wrong time of year too come and it was very far away from shops ect ,but after a drive too the nearest shop and a stock up of snacks we had the most lovely evening here , the rooms were small but cozy with a little radiator and the beds were comfy ,we booked a slot for the hot tub at 7pm and dinner at 8pm , we were debating whether too go into the hot tub because of how cold it was outside but we are so so so glad we did !! It was the highlight of our stay just wish we had a little longer than 30 minutes to relax and look up at the stars some more :) Dinner was absolutely fabulous! The chef catered too myself as I’m very fussy and went out of his way to create me something not on the menu so I’m so beyond thankful it was delicious!! My partner is a foodie and had the steak ,he said it’s the best he has ever had ! Cooked exactly how he’d ask, everything we ate was homemade and it’s worth coming here for the food alone :) Overall a very enjoyable night away ,Thankyou so much !! We will be back

A Groupon was bought for two nights as a 50th birthday present. The main attraction for the buyer was the alpaca experience. The restrictions were such that I had to use the voucher before Christmas. Due to voucher, I couldn’t book on online and having tried to ring over 30 times during the times advertised, it became apparent that the phone isn’t answered. I had to resort to email. There weren’t any Saturday dates available so had to have a Thurs/Fri. Found a date in October which was suitable. The hotel requested more information. Gave them more information over email and then they requested something else. Whilst waiting for them to come back to me which took a while, they came back to tell me those dates were no longer available because someone else had booked. Had to settle for another date in November. Whilst waiting for them to confirm, I could no longer make it, but too late, they took it as confirmation. Having arrived late on Thursday night, they politely allowed us to arrive late. We were advised that if we wanted a full English for breakfast for £9.99, he had to be booked the day before by 10pm. As we arrived at 10.30, we were too late to request. The downstairs area was decorated beautifully. Shame last orders at the bar are 9.45pm. The room was decorated to a theme which was nice but the room was very small, no view (one wasn’t promised) and a damp patch in the bathroom. For two people in the room, only one shower and hand towel was provided. There was also a damp patch in the bathroom. The mattress was cheap and uncomfortable as were the solid pillows. You could also hear everything from next door. The inclusive breakfast was croissant, butter jam and muffin. No alternative and no allergies were checked. There were served in a room, no cups or serviettes. Had to ask for cups and for the kettle to be filled and had to make hot drinks hostel style. The hot tub was quite a walk up a track to an area that was open with no changing facilities and opposite a Glamping pod offering no privacy or anywhere to change. No towels were offered. A long wet walk to return to hotel. The ‘alpaca experience’ was feeding them over the fence on morning of leaving. I know times are hard to currently make money but this accusation has cut corners to the detriment of customer service. Yes the hot tub and alpacas were there but neither were a worthy experience to make the stay enjoyable.

Booked for 2 nights stay, with bad weather coming in, we upgraded from a glamping pod to a room. When arriving, there was no one around, rang the bell a few times until someone came. Downstairs is lovely, very quirky, we arrived on pizza night, I'm not really a fan of pizza but there was no other option. I'd just like to say they were lovely, so compliments to the chef. We spent some time in the bar before returning to our room. On our way up, there is an awful smell, which I think is damp. Carpets need replacing. Our room was cold, and the heating was not working, we were brought a heater straight away, and we really appreciated this. The bed wasn't the most comfortable and we didn't sleep well. Went down in the morning and no one around. We decided to leave, and we felt another night was not an option for us. We didn't use the hot tub. We didn't fancy using a hot tub others had been in. We had booked this as a relaxing few days away to spend some time together, and we ended up just going home. Very disappointed

We had our wedding at abels harp on 30th September. The whole experience was fantastic, the staff were amazing from the time of booking, right up to the day. The venue was perfect, would highly recommend if you're looking for an all-in package. Food was lovely, including the breakfast on 2 days.

After arriving and eating some of our afternoon tea which arrived swarming with flies, drinking tea with no saucer and having to use the main plate for a dripping wet teaspoon we went to the Stiperstones Inn. Once we said that we were staying at Abel’s Harp the bar went a bit quiet and most of the locals apologised for it being a bad reflection of the area. The local vicar, a nice lady, even tried to arrange alternative accommodation for us! Anyway, the hot tub is full of gravel and shale as most people in the glamping pods will have walked barefoot to the facility that has no changing facilities. There is one light which illuminates 10% of the walk down a super steep slope to the toilets and the hotel area itself was filthy. Overflowing ashtrays with rain soaked fag buts join the broken silk flowers on the floor, trampled in food and dead flies in the windows. Overall there is a lack of attention to detail, poor bedding and a very rules based customer experience. It did make me laugh when we were told that the emergency phone is switched off at 10.00pm sharp…as a health and safety professional my ears pricked up. Avoid

My boyfriend and I had an amazing stay here in one of the huts. Staff were friendly and accommodating, food was great (both afternoon tea and evening meal) and they had great additions such as alpaca feeding and a hot tub. Minor improvements could be made - the coat rail wasn’t fixed into wall properly and there could be more choice for breakfast, however overall it was a fantastic stay :)
