The Owl Hotel presents a dichotomy in guest experiences. While it boasts a cozy ambiance and is praised for its cleanliness and well-decorated spaces, particularly during special events, opinions on value diverge, with some guests deeming it overpriced. The hotel's bar and food receive compliments; however, concerns have been raised about room and bathroom upkeep. Service quality varies, with reports of both friendliness and disorganization. Room size and maintenance are noted concerns, although family rooms are sometimes recognized for comfort and price.

Me and some friends booked to go here for New Years Eve 2019 as we love the surrounding areas and fancied something different. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly lady who checked us in and showed us to our rooms which were beautiful. However when going down for dinner we found our table was in a corner right at the back of the pub and we were made to feel like we were sat out of the way of everything else. The waitress who took our order was also lovely however when the starters came the orders were wrong, and had to be sent back, we had also asked for the Camembert sharer and were told this was a large portion however when it came it was tiny and barely enough for one person let alone a sharer. Two of us ordered the 4 cheese steak for mains which tasted nice, however the onion rings were missing on both orders and mushrooms missing on one. We mentioned this to staff and it seemed to get brushed off and no refund/replacement made.
The atmosphere in the pub to say it was NYE was poor, and it didn’t feel like it was a main event.
Me and my friends are glad that we didn’t pay for a ticket as first thought as we would have been disappointed.
The overall service was poor but the staff were friendly, especially the lady who did breakfast and the tall blonde haired bar man. However it is a shame we were all were made to feel like we we pushed to the back of the pub and sat out of the way of the entertainment.

Picked here as visiting friends and was the nearest place. Having originally called a week before to see if we could check in hour earlier and was told £20 more which is ridiculous after having paid around £130 just for one night and another £8 plus pp for breakfast. I asked if we could check in half hour before on arrival and was still told £20 was not impressed considering having to get to a wedding for 3pm which made it a rush.
Staff were lovely but seemed quite rushed and stressed at breakfast and not the best organised . But breakfast was nice.
Room was not worth the price, had to ask for clean pillow case as dirty mark on one. Bathroom wasn’t the cleanest needs up dating and double bed was 2 twins a joined. okay if just a night but probably not for longer.

As usual in January take all our extended family out for a Sunday meal (18 of us) as part of their Christmas present. We decided to go nearer home this time.Really wish we hadn't bothered. Here are some of the comments from the family.Yorkshire puddings like leather, not enough gravy, pork tough & inedible, beef I could not chew, steak top price but not good quality, batter on fish tasted burnt, 3 people complained about the Panacotta,me included. The menu advertised it as lemon panacotta with strawberries & Scottish Shortbreads, note the (S) on the end of strawberry & shortbread. What we got was a splodge that looked like an upturned poached egg one strawberry cut in half ,1 shortbread finger,no sign of any lemon flavour. The cost of this meal for us was £ 404. One good thing out of all this were the 2 waitresses who in all fairness were rushed off their feet but still managed to be so nice & cheerful, they were certainly overworked,2 lovely young ladies. No disrespect to the 2 ladies as they served food as it left the kitchen but rather the kitchen was overwhelmed so service very slow & not acceptable. Even though we live just round the corner will not use them again.

This is our 1st visit to The Owl Hotel. On arrival on Saturday afternoon the whole village had been suffering from a power cut. The staff managed very well with this problem and solved every problem very professionally. The food both at the function and breakfast where faultless. When you stay at a hotel and at a function you think that your going to get your pants down at the bar. But this was not the case. All drinks where quite reasonable. For example a pint of Guinness was £3.70 & a bottle of Prosecco was £17.55. The room was spot on with about 8 usb sockets on the plugs. Mugs for tea & coffee plenty of milk. The rooms where cozy but for 1 or 2 nights they’re perfect.
I would highly recommend.

I can’t praise the place enough. We’ve just been for Sunday Lunch and it was first class. The Owl is very fairly priced with a decent range of wines and beers on offer. Our dogs were even made welcome with a fresh bowl of water and a doggy treat.

The staff were all brilliant! From the lady at the front door, firmly but very politely ensuring Covid compliance. To the guy behind the bar and the excellent table service. Thank you for a great experience in spite of the present (Covid) situation. Don’t change a thing, we’ll see you again soon.

My husband was 70 in January so was unable to celebrate due to lockdown. We therefore wanted to have a party, when that was possible. As restrictions began to be lifted, we contacted the Manager (Philippa) at the Owl who worked carefully with us, in very uncertain times to plan our party for over 70 guests.
When we were able to visit the pub, we met face-to -face and were afforded a significant amount of Philippas time and one of her colleagues, Ryan.
We were extremely lucky that restrictions were lifted on the 19 July and our party was planned for 24 July. We also had good weather, unlike the forecast of thunderstorms!!
This resulted in a party in the newly, tastefully decorated function room, with private use of a terrace and use a large garden. The youngest guest was a 1 year old, but there were other children who loved playing in the garden. The age range included an 82 year old. All had a fantastic time.
Phillippa and her staff were amazing. They worked very hard throughout the evening and worked with us on the evening to deliver all we wanted.
Many of our guests stayed over, so we were able to meet for breakfast too. The rooms and breakfast were very positively received by them all. Again, the care and positive work ethic of the staff, made breakfast a pleasure for everyone.
We would highly recommend this venues and the staff. Thank you for a wonderful party.

Booked a table over the phone with ease, we wanted a table for 9 people and the team at the owl made this possible, obviously following the new social distancing rules. We had 2 tables next to eat other.
When we arrived we were welcomed and taken to our table, a drinks order was taken and they drinks arrived swiftly. Then we ordered our food, again it arrived in good time and was all hot and tasty.
Being a large party we all wanted things at different times, drinks, sauces, etc but our server Bethany was so attentive and catered to our every need. Even ran out after us as grandad had forgot his glasses!!
What a lovely, warm and welcoming place, we will definitely be back.
Great work!!

I was staying at the owl for a family wedding. I arrived at the hotel at 13:30 and went to reception to check in - I was 30 minutes early so planned to have a drink whilst I waited. I was informed that my room was in fact ready but that I would need to pay an additional £20 to enter it 30min it’s early. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me seeing as it was already ‘cleaned’ and ready to go. Room was basic - bathroom extremely outdated and not clean. They don’t even have toilet brushes!?!
So whilst I waited to check in I ordered a strawberry gin off their speciality gin menu. I was given a lemon gin! I also ordered cheesy fries for £4.25 which the menu stated they had cheese sauce and paprika on. They arrived with about 10grams of grated cheese on. Not what the menu stated. I requested for both the drink and food to be corrected. Done with a rolling eye my food was returned swimming in the cheese sauce mentioned on the menu and with paprika on. Not nice at all. Thanks for a dire experience the owl - will not be returning

This was a great hotel, the location was good and the staff were very helpful. The rooms were very clean and comfortable with everything you’d need including USB ports in the bedside plug sockets. The venue for the party was perfect and the bar prices were good. The food was reasonably priced and good quality. Couldn’t fault it and will go back again

Four of us stayed for one night and had dinner and breakfast.
When we booked in we paid an additional cost for breakfast.
I have given one star as the room was fine, clean and had a large fan.

After that things went downhill!
We had a 7pm booking and at 8.30 we hadn`t been offered menus even though there were very few people in the restaurant. We hadn`t seen our friends for a very long time, so initially didn`t notice the time
Eventually, my husband went to find the menus and after another wait we ordered.
The food was okay when it came although the steak ordered came with chips, not salad. It was returned with a request for it to be served on a cold plate, which was ignored- salad on a warm plate?
One dessert which was described as strawberries came with one very small strawberry but by this time we had sat for hours and given up the will to live!!

Breakfast would have made Basil Fawlty look efficient!
Again a long wait and my husband went to find menus again.
The lovely housekeeper took our drinks order eventually with an apology. She said she was helping out as there was only one waitress and the hotel was full. We asked if they had staff absences due to covid-19 but this was not the case.
After another long wait, someone came to take our order but told us there was no toast and no eggs. This meant we needed to rethink our orders. We ordered our croissants, yogurt and then our hot breakfast, albeit a much more limited choice.
Another wait, initially patiently, then irritatingly breakfast items were delivered to tables where the occupants had ordered after us. There was no organisation seemingly of the order people had arrived for breakfast.
Further waiting then the hot elements arrived, but no croissants or yogurt.
Shortly after they arrived but the table wasn`t large enough to accommodate everything at once.
This time an apology was given about a gas problem??

I cannot understand why there was a shortage of eggs as there is a supermarket next door to the hotel. Surely they sell eggs. Maybe the manager has a working toaster?

I also think we should have been given the information about the limited breakfast choice when we arrived as we would probably have eaten breakfast elsewhere.

Had there been anyone around we would have complained but the girl waiting at both dinner and breakfast looked harassed enough as it was.

Avoid!

Dear LeishaM Thank you for taking the time to leave us your valued feedback, clearly at the time of your visit things were not as they should be and for this I apologise. I am not going to attempt to justify the lack of service, food quality and obvious lack of team at the time of your visit but rest assured we have worked hard on recruiting, training, new menus and are very proud of the team and business we are now! there is no need to in your words 'avoid' and I do hope you would be willing to give us another try! Covid has impacted the hospitality industry in many ways but we are well and truly on our way back Kind regards
