As a regular customer for the ‘Xmas Menu’ dinner each year at ‘The Cricketers’, one might wonder what the change of ownership from Trevor and Sally to the now Chestnut Group, would have on the usual excellent food, ambiance and service of the place. Rest assured, from the friendliness of the ‘front of house’ (Phil) right through to the same chefs and kitchen staff, it is still a fabulous experience. For the modest sum of £26.00 I had a sublime starter of Natural Smoked Haddock, baked in a tomato, lemon, parsley and Gruyere cheese sauce topped with a herb bread crumb and served with toasted garlic bread. I followed this with a main of Medallions of Local Venison, with roasted carrots, baby turnips and kale, finished with a rich port and bitter chocolate jus and hazelnut pesto. I nearly turned down a sweet ( I could have saved 4 quid!!) but went with the Sticky Toffee Pudding with a Brandy Basket filled with a boozy Rum & Raisin Ice Cream. We sat in the ‘COVID safe’ and compliant marquee with its impressive flame tower style heaters, lap blankets/sheepskins and felt perfectly comfortable when temperatures outside were below 10C. Some may imagine that with the ‘take-over’ it will never be quite the same, from today’s experience and COVID willing we will be back again next year for another quality Xmas Dinner. …
Been waiting since lockdown to go back and it was well worth the wait, the social distancing is very well managed, the food was fantastic! the pork belly starter was exceptional, it’s well priced, our waitress was professional and attentive, couldn’t ask for more! Definitely returning soon!
We actually ate here over the last bank holiday and I’ve been meaning to review ever since. I couldn’t recommend this restaurant enough. We didn’t book and it was understandably packed but the staff found us a lovely table so we could have lunch there. The food itself was outstanding and great care was taken to make everything we had. The cheeseboard is also a must, even if you’re stuffed! The staff are attentive and friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate returning if I end up in Clavering again. It was the highlight of our weekend away. Thanks a lot!
Lovely friendly pub with roaring fires and delicious food. My room was spacious but cosy with a great bathroom. Breakfast poached eggs and freshly squeezed orange juice was perfect. Many thanks to the lovely lady who served me at breakfast who recommended some great places to visit in the area.
A two day trip in October 2030 to a cosy pub near Saffron Walden. Very comfortable room, albeit across the road from the main pub. We were booked for dinner, bed and breakfast. Plenty of choice on the three course dinner menu which my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed. . The breakfasts were equally good with excellent table service.
