Traditional 300 year old inn, located just far enough out of the city to avoid the noisy hustle and bustle, but close enough for the convenience of the M5. Serving delicious homemade pub food, cask ales, local lagers, fine wine & soft drinks to suit with a large beer garden and festoon lit canopied area. Also dog friendly with doggy treats & water at the ready. There are four newly decorated en-suite hotel rooms with most amenities available to book, making us a great base for your stay. Plenty of car parking with electric car chargers available. Train station nearby also. Great location if going to Sandy Park whether it's for an Exeter Chiefs game of attending a conference - about a 5 min walk to venue. The Blue Ball team at Sandy gate, Exeter, very muich look forward to welcoming you to our friendly family run pub & restaurant very soon.

We stayed here as we were attending a function at Sandy Park, and coincidentally watching Exeter Chiefs play there the following day - a short 10 minute walk away.
The pub itself, although we only had time for a couple of drinks after the function, had a great feel to it, and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
We stayed overnight, and the room was well equipped with everything you need for an overnight stay. With awful wind and torrential rain, we still managed to get a good nights sleep, but the area surrounding the rooms floods so you have to wade through deep puddles to get out from the room, so just be careful!
We left our car in the car park for the rugby on the Saturday for free which was great, but unfortunately our car was damaged by another car whilst parked which put a downer on our stay. We understand that the hotel isn't liable for damages in the car park as such, but I feel the need to warn others that on match days, it does get very busy in the car park, so just keep an eye on your car.
Overall, we were happy with our stay and we will be back should we need an overnight stay near Sandy Park!

We had a wonderful stay at Blue Ball Inn SANDYGATE. Service was friendly and helpfu. The bed was comfortable and the room clean. The breakfast was freshly cooked to order with a full English breakfast, scrumptious toast both brown and white and delicious coffee.
The location is just off M5 at Exeter but surprisingly there is no traffic noise. a place to recommend. The evening meal was also freshly cooked to order with delicious fish - fish and chips and the trout is to be recommended. Looking forward to our next visit.

This review dose not in anyway reflect the pub as we did not drink or eat here. This is purely based on the accommodation.
We were greeted with a mouldy feet smell when entering the room (Room 1)that is adjacent with the main road. The noise was constant. The 3 windows had the cheap vertical cloth like blinds that bleed the light through the windows, not very private. I used the towels and bed throw to block out the light so we could get some sleep. In the morning i noticed the iron had a broken lead with wires showing. There were no Covid instructions and the website mentioned allthough
breakfast was not included you could get food at the pub in the morning. After being woken up to workmen smacking hammers on the wall outside the room with cement machine going at 7.30am (picture of room attached) we up'd and left as soon as we could. Trying to check out we walked to the pub that was all locked up, so no breakfast! A man in the garden took the room key and mentioned we should of had an email to explain check out, we never received! I wonder if it was sent out with the email informing us of the works outside the room that was due the morning of our stay! We feel we were misslead by the advertising of the room. What was supposed to be a relaxing evening away became stressful and uncomfortable. By far the worst place we have stayed.

Not been here for years but had an impromptu catch up with a friend.

Ample parking and generally level access to a tidy and welcoming bar.

Staff were friendly on arrival and we managed to get a table. It was fairly busy (with a private function) but certainly no feeling of being crammed in.

Promising variety of menu which wasn’t extensive - but meant there’s something for everyone. From sandwiches to baked potatoes to a good full blown meal. Prices were average but what came out was certainly worth it. A huge menu causes me concern if practical issues.

We both went for the Belly Pork (or Pork Belly as it states on the menu….) and we thoroughly enjoyed our choice.

A single substantial piece of belly pork with a perfect crunch, nice element of fat and some very tasty meat.

Served with a sweet potato mash this was really a big hit for me. I’ve been disappointed with sweet potato in the past so avoid it but this was inspirational for me at least. Served with baby carrots and green beans along with a really nice gravy.

It was a substantial meal for a very reasonable price of £15.95 per head. Simply well presented it was so good. Keeping it simple really works.

Staff throughout were attentive and fun to chat to.

All set in all a lovely pub, so what could be better?

A few minutes off J30 it’s worth a detour if you’re travelling through. Ikea is about 10 minutes away so it’s worth supporting this local, St Austell Brewery, pub if you want to abound queues, meatballs and hot dogs.

Has a beer garden and outside bar by the look of it.

Well worth a visit.

In these pandemic strained times we have relied on our local hostelry and boy, have they delivered!
Today we had Christmas lunch there and it was excellent. Relaxed but attentive service and everything cooked fresh including a 5* beef Wellington which was served rare as is required.
We're very lucky to have this as our local and hope we'll be visiting regularly in 2021
Highly recommended.

The food is well presented, locally sourced and delicious. What finished of a great experience was the fantastic staff. If you want wholesome food this is the place be. The staff went the extra mile as my car broke down at their premises and they withheld our dinner reservation whilst the RAC fixed my car. Nothing is too much trouble and that is why we come back time and time again.

Went for a meal this evening and only one waitress and one man behind the bar. Do feel sorry for them as they were trying. I grabbed a seat whilst waiting for someone to arrive and after 15 minutes no one came so thought I would ask the bar if it was table service or ordered here. Was told it was table service but if I could sit as close to the door as possible as they only have one waitress. We were only behind another family and went on the grass for social distancing so was a bit surprised but I did ask if they wanted us to move and they kindly said we could stay where we are. We come here most weeks and it’s usually £15.50 for a bottle of Chardonnay however now it is £29! I did find this quite ridiculous as it’s something I would expect to pay at The Jack In The Green or The Salutation. I think what made it more frustrating is they haven’t updated their wine list as it clearly says £15.50 and we do check before we go somewhere as if we knew it would be double the price we would have came elsewhere. I think they shouldn’t open the pub and restaurant if there are only 2 staff but the waitress was very kind to double check the price for us. £15 for a burger too. Unfortunately won’t be returning but they do lovely food so would recommend but you could be risking it!

Popped in for Sunday lunch with the family, must say what a very nice dinner it was. Served on hot plates nice selection of vegetables, lovely caramelised parsnips. Big Yorkshire pudding and nicely cooked roast beef. Waiting staff nice and pleasant and looking clean and tidy. Just a couple of things to be critical about. Served with 3 small potatoes on the plate, 3 adults and only 1 small bowl of veg and cauliflower cheese. Came to pay the bill, but no interaction from the manager asking if everything was ok when paying the bill. Would return for another family dinner.

Booked the Blue Ball as had lovely food there pre Christmas during covid restrictions. Had a gorgeous steak at this time , so thought would be for my daughter visiting with her partner and a few other family members. A young waiter served us, who was polite. The choice of main meals was not good.
My daughter and son had the beef madras which was served barely warm they reheated their meal. Myself and another decided on the gammon, which was overcooked and chewy. I did mention this to the waiter but didn't even get a sorry. I had a medium glass of rose charged @ £8.60, which is rather excessive!!
Needless to say we will not be returning.
Oh on the plus side, one of our party had the sausage and mash and in fairness he did say that was tasty.

It's a typical pub car park, quite spacious, right next to the main building and directly outside the guest bedrooms.
