#49 of 125 hotels in Riga
Hotel KRISTOFS is a boutique style family owned hotel. It is situated in the very heart of Old Riga in 18th century mansion. There are 10 rooms in the hotel: 7 doubles, 1 twin, 2 Family rooms. Rooms are big enough for an extra bed and/or a baby cot. One of the Superior Double rooms has antique wooden furniture; other rooms have a rather modern layout. Our guests have great opportunity to relax enjoying the beautiful view of the roofs and towers of Old Riga. Goldfish in a pond complement the lobby's décor.

We arrived around 5.30 pm, hoping to catch the opera at 7. A taxi brought us to the locked door of the hotel. Ringing the bell got no reaction. What to do? Some people came out, so we managed to squeeze in, and found an envelope at the reception desk with our name on it. Take lift, up one flight of stairs. I would not call it a "flight of stairs". More like a dark and narrow, and extremely steep ladder, that felt downright dangerous to squeeze ourselves and our suitcases up. The room itself was large and clean, but the beds looked like something you would expect to find in a camping cottage. Of course, it would be impossible to get a proper bed up that ladder. Bathroom looks clean, but stinks of sewage, pinch your nose if you have to go in there. Going out, still hoping to catch the opera, we risked our necks again down the so called stairs, but faced again the problem: How to get in again once we go out? No explanation was given, an no one answered the management´s phone for the first ten tries. From other guests, we learned that they had received an email with a code for the door. On the eleventh try, we got an answer, and was texted the precious code. I suppose not sending us the code is an honest mistake - but not warning guests that they will sleep in a death trap in case of a fire, and have to risk their necks every time they enter or leave their room, and that you have to manage your luggage up a so called staircase that a really big suitcase would not fit through, is unacceptable. We are in our sixties. Had we been a few years older we would not have been able to reach our room at all, and had we been told all of this when we booked the room, we would have stayed somewhere else.

Location is perfect but due to not having staff in nighttime makes it one scary place. Frontdoor is opened with a code at nighttime and how many knows it...? Lobby & restaurant is fasinatinginly renovated. Have a canarian bird and fishpond but rooms.. old, very old, wooden floors, dreadfull old beds and linen smelled dusty(?) very much. Room was so COLD... Staff was friendly and breakfast plenty & good. Used to be called hotel Mann-Tess and many signs were still on that name.

Problems: A. Confirmed paid room not available when we arrived (5PM), after reconfirmation that morning, 22 July, 2019 B. Kristofs hotel made no effort to find an appropriate substitute C. Both Kristofs and Booking.com blamed each other for the mistake D. Only effort was to suggest getting me a room 4+km away from Kristofs, near the airport E. I had to look for a hotel in the same neighborhood, old town Riga; it was not the best hotel F. Kristofs offered no compensation; the guy at reception was clueless and not helpful. He asked if I had read my email that was sent by Booking.com at 4.28PM informing me of the cancellation. G. Booking.com paid part of the difference between the new hotel I found and the price I paid Kristofs H. Booking.com had terrible customer service and would only compensate me, initially for 15 euros, then 25 euros, after 5 email exchanges. I rejected the compensation because it did not show good faith. I. My 18 hour overnight layover at Riga was ruined J. Booking.com does not allow review under this circumstances because I never stay at Kirstofs, but Kristofs failed to honor a paid reservation the very last minute which showed a total lack of professionalism.
