Stayed 5 nights at Sequoia Lodge. The motel room was perfect for me - spacious bedroom and bathroom, a garden outlook, small fridge, microwave, china, and more. Graeme a very attentive and welcoming host. Well equipped and appealing common areas. Friendly vibe. Handy to shops and waterfront.
Thanks for a great stay at Sequoia! We had a great time and met some very nice people :) Corey: The hostel was clean, tidy, and spacious. Props to the owner whom I presume is Graham he was one of the nicest hostel owners I’ve met in all four years of my traveling. Sydney: It’s been ages since I’ve stayed in a hostel and could not have asked for a better experience. The facilities were great and they had just about anything you could’ve asked for including onions and free breakfast. Thanks for a lovely stay!
It is my first time to stay in this accommodation during Christmas holiday 2020. I enjoyed this tidy and lovely place as well as the friendly customer service. I contacted this place after making reservation. The communication from hosts was prompt as I received the response very soon. The price is very reasonable. The customers will have free breakfast and free WIFI. It also offers free shuttle to take customers to ferry terminal and long distance bus stop. I recommend this place for the travellers in Picton. I will live in this place again when I travel to Picton in the future.
Stayed 3 nights in double ensuite room. Duvet had stains so I used another spare one in room. Bedding and bed was comfortable. Shower was hot and good. Sink was in room. Good location from town. Picton is small though so no problem. Ample kitchen equipment. Breakfast was very basic but ok. Free teas and coffees all day. Lounge furniture was dated and not too comfortable. Main owner was lovely. One of the hostel workers was abrupt, snappy and rude. Highlight was hot chocolate cake 8pm daily. Didn't know of free shuttle upon arrival so paid $5 for ride but on return journey got free ride. Overall I thought accomodation was over priced for what it was and provided.
I stayed at Sequoia Lodge for two nights after a few weeks camping around the South Island. I've stayed in lots of hostels around the world - some big and shiny and new, some that need a bit of love, some homely and some more impersonal. Sequoia definitely falls into the homely category. This isn't a party hostel. The age range of the guests was wide and I spend one evening chatting to an Australian couple in their 60s who were staying for a few nights. Communal Spaces There are three main communal spaces: 1) a quiet reading room with sofas, books and board games, 2) a large open plan kitchen and living / dining room with sofas and tables and chairs and 3) a good sized outdoor area with comfortable chairs and table and benches. The atmosphere here is relaxed, quiet and friendly. I didn't actually do any cooking there myself, but the kitchen seemed a good size for the size of the hostel, it always looked clean and the daily free hot chocolate pudding is a great touch. The Room and Bathroom I stayed in a 6 person all female dorm room, which had it's own bathroom for the 6 of us. The room wasn't the most modern, but it was clean and well maintained. The bunk beds are wooden so you don't get the creaky metal waking you up if people go to bed after you. Each bed has its own reading light and shelf. The bed linen was clean and the beds comfortable. The bathroom had the benefit of having separate doors to the toilet and shower, so if someone was using one someone else could still use the other or the sink. There was also plenty of space around the sink for everyone to leave wash bags. It was nicer than having to carry things to huge central communal bathrooms like in other hotels. Other Areas There is a small laundry which can get very busy. It could do with being a bit bigger for the size of the hostel, but I didn't have to wait that long really. There is also a hot tub which works on a half hour booking system. I didn't use it so can't comment on the cleanliness of that. Location Picton isn't a very big place and it was just a short walk into town and down to the ferry. About 15 mins. There are some nice cafes and shops as well as some nice walks with excellent views. If you're looking for super modern this isn't the place for you. But if you're looking for a friendly and clean place to relax then I would definitely recommend Sequoia. I would stay again.…
