Day Ya has a fantastic location which felt reasonably safe (important in the Medina) though women might be wary of walking around along at night- though this applies all over Tunis really.

Lovely tiles and courtyard- look at the pictures, exellent staff who speak good English and are very helpful and genuinely nice. There is a great rooftop and a guest kitchen which is helpful to have (though not well equipped or used.

It is a hostel though, so its basic. The rooms are around a coatyard so it can get noisy- my friend had a crying baby in room next door which made it hard to sleep. Internet is patchy. And weirdly in such a coffee drinking country the breakfast (otherwise good) had instant coffee which is frustrating....I hate instant coffee!

But the real deal is that it is the only cheap hotel in the Medina, the local area is friendly and untouristy, and if you stay there you are immersed in real old Tunis which is worth a lot in my book.

This hostel offers a clean friendly safe place to stay within the Medina. Common areas are pleasant with local charm & old pictures of Tunis. Receptions staff is willing to assist with planning, & information. Breakfast buffet is not large but offers a variety.
They also offer a 3 day/ 2 night trip to the South that is well priced and paced. I booked upon arrival (not sure in season if this would work) and left 2 days later.
Enjoy!

A traditional guest house inside the medina with a roof with views.

There's a central two tier courtyard with rooms around the outside and also a room on the roof.

Very friendly and highly recommended. I will be back.

Our group was comprised of four mature women who were there to teach at an English camp for a week. We were there in early July and the heat was what one might expect in Tunisia at that time of year: HOT! Dar Ya was a really great experience.

Our room was on the first floor, and there was no AC. This traditional style Tunisian home had no windows to the outside so we relied heavily on the fan in our room. I had also brought a small personal fan which I'd recommend. There was another group of 10 teenagers and leaders staying there at the same time, and they had 2 rooms upstairs, one with an AC unit.

There were two showers, two sinks, and about 5 toilets which were shared with the other first floor guests. They were cleaned each morning and everything was well-maintained.

The morning breakfast was really great and offered hard boiled eggs, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, pastries, yogurt, coffee and tea served on beautiful Tunisian pottery. The staff are so accommodating and when the gentleman who set up the daily breakfast realized we had an early flight, he made sure we had coffee and pastries.

As someone else stated, the lighting in our room was rather dim, but we made it work. Also, WiFi was available for free, but rather weak. I'd definitely stay there again. It was a great location and felt very safe.

This is the most homely, cosy hotel I ever visited.

It truly is a wonderful experience and the staff from the owner Khalid, to the reception to the maid Na3ima are truly kind, and treated us like family not like guests.

We original were booked for 3 nights and ended up staying more than 2 weeks...

It's in the old souk old medina town. A real experience of Tunisian life and history here.

The streets and the hotel building itself is a heritage site - it has history and a real charm.

I have never recommended a place because there's always something not right with most places...but I can wholeheartedly recommend this little gem of a hotel as I know that it will be a beautiful, cosy and homely and wonderful experience.

I havr stayed in other hotels in tunisia but if you dont want a place that looks like every other hotel in the world and has no character you should stay here.

It is more of a real experience of tunis and it's old streets and what it has to offer and the beautiful decor - even a well inside the hotel it's so historic - make it more special than the very ordinary 4/5 star hotels that usually all look the same.

The place is looked after very well and the staff and management are beyond helpful and friendly.

We were lost several times - and each time someone from the hotel would come meet us and walk us back...Wonderful

Truly a little gem.

Staff were all amazing, incredibly kind, hospitable and helpful Stayed in dorm room but because I was travelling in winter I had it to myself. All very quiet, warm and comfortable Great location. I enjoyed walking through the medina and very accessible to the rest of the city. Easy walk to Marina for trains

We spent 3 nights at the beginning of our recent holiday to Tunisia. Lovely, clean rooms in the heart of the Medina. Joseph, from reception, helped us to organise a cheap and reliable rental car at the last minute. Breakfast was delicious and ample. Set the tone for the rest of an amazing trip to Tunisia

Super friendly helpful staff. Our room was large and spacious, opening out onto courtyard (bit noisy if you wanted to sleep in). Beautiful quirky traditional decor, great roof top views. Simple but generous buffet breakfast included. Bit hard to find but you get the hang of it. Recommend for people up for adventure and genuinely interested in Tunisia.
