Established in 1963, Atelefunge is simply ANTIQUE and AFFORDABLE!! Atelefugne is composed of a local bar, a traditional restaurant and 23 rooms. Most of the rooms SHARE a bath and a handful rooms with en-suites. Atelefugne is a WORK-IN-PROGRESS and we are constantly making improvements on the 50 plus years property. Atelefugne is not a four star, it's not a three star, it's not even a zero star but a well-liked, LOCAL, budget hostel. It's not FANCY and it's located in an INDUSTRIAL surroundings, in Kera, Bulgaria area. Distance from the airport is about 7 kms. Distance from the African Union Headquarters is 1 km. Atelefugne has a traditional restaurant (NO HAMBURGER or PIZZA) that proudly serves mouth-watering meals. The most popular is the spicy Yebeg wot (lamb stew) among many meat dishes and Beyayenetu (veggie combo) on Orthodox fasting days (which are Wednesdays and Fridays). Tegabino (pureed cheakpeas) is excellent and always available. All meals are served with Ethiopian flat bread, injera, unique to Ethiopia. Atelefugne has at its centre, a casual but friendly bar where many local beers are served - the most popular being Habesha, followed by Walya. But there is also Harar, Bedele and Meta. Also served are local wines, variety of local gins as well as many of your favorite soft drinks. Free wi-fi is available in the bar, terrace and rooms. Atelefugne has clean rooms with a full bed in smaller rooms and queen-sized bed in the larger ones. Rooms are decorated with traditional bedcovers, curtains, and local paintings. The original wooden floors and interesting wooden chairs and cabinets make the space warm and comfortable. Atelefugne provides toiletries. Please note: ATELEFUGNE DOES NOT PROVIDE TWO BEDS OR EXTRA BEDS FOR CHILDREN. Cleanup is upon request. Atelefugne does not provide airport pickup but can arrange a taxi. Airport taxis are also readily available. Please be aware that although the owner and some of the staff are fluent English speakers, a little patience with those that only speak Amharic would be greatly appreciated.Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to be of service.

There is no prime location for backpackers in Addis, or a great deal to do that depends on location. This place is good if you want a room somewhere for 24USD and aren't fussed about atmosphere or meeting other travellers. It's one of many hotels which have entered themselves on hostelworld but isn't a hostel. The facilities are okay. They do food and coffee during the day, but that seemed to stop after 17.00. Requests for tea in the evening were met with 'tomorrow', so you have to go out for dinner. The bathrooms were average with a trickle but hot shower. Other bathroom doors didn't lock. The manager Johannes is nice. We booked for two nights but he let us cancel the second night. In general he didn't seem to be that bothered about most things which is good and bad. The other staff were nice as well. We moved for our second night because we were told the road would be blocked outside atelefunge due to a parade. If you're a backpacker coming to Addis I would recommend staying at Mr Martin's Cosy Place, which is much more of a hostel. Book early as it's often full!

This place is a staple and has been here since 1963. It’s friendly and comfortable with reasonable wifi. A bit out of the way in Kera. About $19 a night. There is a restaurant on site which doesn’t seem to like serving too late so be aware. Also quite a few mosquitoes. I began my long journey here and I'll end it at Atelfugne in a week's time.

There are at least 6 things I like about the place: It is within walking distance to the AU and it took me 15-20mins to walk there; The wifi worked well most of the time and then ethiotel went down – everywhere; The room I had was large and airy with a balcony and good natural light during the day; The room, bathroom, towels and bedsheets were clean and they have nice paintings and décor on the wall; the hot shower worked throughout my ten-day stay and the food was good, I ate Ethiopian dishes only. Accommodation in Addis is expensive and if you can secure a place like this at USD 30, then you are lucky. I would stay here again, if convenient, but I needed to move to a cheaper place with access to cooking facilities for my long-term stay in Addis. However, it is good to point out that the rooms face the parking and noise from the road is audible. You will hear the cars coming in and going out and also from the main road. I had some noisy neighbours in the room across that were late to bed, talked loudly and were early to rise – not a fault of the hotel. I could not get breakfast before 8.30am so this was inconvenient since I needed to be at the office by 8am. The easy chairs in the room need an overhaul and the bathroom could do with some paint on the ceiling. There was also some smell from the bathroom, at certain times, but I just closed the door. I could not find any supermarkets or nice restaurants nearby. “Shishu,” the burger restaurant is about a kilometre away and just after the Abattoirs behind a furniture warehouse, so I just ate at the hotel restaurant. The nearest supermarket is close to the AU building. There are many locals who frequent the bar so this can get noisy but it is not excessive and does not go late into the night. The indoor part of the restaurant also needs to be rehabilitated. The feature that was the most inconvenient was the dim light in the room. I found I could not read or work at night and I was travelling for business. I would also recommend that they install a ‘modesty window’ in the bathroom. I’m not sure what was going on in the red building across the street but I was almost sure that anyone in there could see through to me showering, so I improvised a curtain. Also note that don’t have laundry services but you can wash and dry your clothes on the balcony. If you are not used to prayers over loudspeakers, you may find the place inconvenient, but I don’t know of any areas in Addis that do not have either a Mosque or a Church or both, nearby. There was one Saturday night when the praying continued through the night and I only managed about 3 hours of sleep in between quiet sessions. It’s part of Addis life. Going back to the good. Atelefugne has excellent and very helpful staff. Most of them speak and understand English and the proprietor is very helpful and welcoming. They organised a taxi to pick me up from the airport and kept my luggage for a few days when I travelled for a short trip. It was a good stay and I would recommend it for anyone on a budget who needs to be on the west-side of Addis.

My Ethiopian friends were shocked when they saw this place - I wasn't quite sure, if it was the place, location or the fact that two women were sharing the same double bed, but the atmosphere were nice and the place was very photogenic.
