This place was value for money. The bathrooms were basic, but you get what you pay for. The restaurant had a view of the valley and the staff were friendly and helpful. One staffer even offered to lend me his laptop when my cellphone surfing wasn't working. I would recommend this place to backpackers. One more thing, when we went on a trek, they allowed us to leave our extra baggage here the whole time, free of charge :)

We originally checked into the Yellow House planning to stay for 2 nights, then decided to extend our stay to 5 nights. We had a basic double room on the top floor, with a double bed, desk, lockable wardrobe, and bathroom with shower and western toilet. The shower was little more than a dribble but it was hot, and after a 17 hour overnight bus trip was enough for us to finally feel clean!

The place runs off solar power, so we didn't have any problems with the electricity going out. None of the power sockets in the rooms worked though, so we had to sit downstairs to charge our cameras, laptop etc.

There's a cool restaurant and garden area downstairs that does great food, and is a really nice place to spend a few hours chilling out and reading a book or using the free wifi.

It's located just out of Thamel, and it never took us more than 5-10 minutes to walk into the heart of Thamel.

Would definitely recommend!

This place is situated in a street full of hostels just outside Thamel, so you have all the benefits of the location without the annoyances. Yellow House has many different rooms and room types, and not all are equally recommended. The quality of the beds is not terrific, bathrooms are very basic but clean and the hotel can be a bit noisy, especially if people are sitting in the garden at night. Wifi-network is poor, only available outside the front door. However, for Nepali standards they offer good value for money. Staff is friendly. They store your luggage for free when you leave hiking for several days, which was very helpful. The restaurant offers simple but good quality food and excellent service.

Wonderful hostel in a great location. It’s a bit outside of Thamel so you can actually walk outside without being hassled by street vendors all the time. However, it is a 5 minute walk and you will be right in Thamel if you want to go there.

The hostel is in a quiet street up a hill (the taxi might drop you off at the bottom of the street, don’t be afraid, it’s only a couple of steps to walk to the entrance). The rooms are clean and spacious, the garden is wonderful and relaxing, the cats are cute and cuddly, and the little restaurant is quite tasty, excellent pancakes.

The owners and staff are really nice and will help you arrange travel, taxis etc. (however, I recommend doing some own research for more expensive stuff like flights. They do offer to book them but after some research, we found a better deal online. However, I would book things like day trips, taxis etc. through them without hesitation, they really strive to arrange good deals for you, e.g. when we took a taxi to the airport, the owner personally talked to the driver when he picked us up and made sure he would not overcharge us).

All in all a wonderful experience and I will stay there again if I come back to Kathmandu.

This is a very centrally located hotel. I stayed with my wife and two other couples for 2 days. Power cuts in the afternoon happen all over Kathmandu. The staff were helpful and friendly. Beautiful views of the mountains from each terrace. I recommend the top floor for more privacy and better views!

A couple of minutes walking away from Thamel's hussle and busstle, is the wonderful quiet and relaxed Yellow House. Run by the most friendly people, employing fantastic staff and offering clean and spacious rooms, it's an absolute topper in KTM!

We loved staying here and will certainly return!

We stayed here twice in one week at the beginning & end of a tour.
It’s a good budget choice away from the hassle of Thamel set in a suburb of Kathmandu.
It has a reception building and car-park with an apartment block behind in a pleasant garden.
We found all the staff very helpful and accommodating – the concierge was always smiling.
We booked through Agoda with no mention of breakfast being available so were surprised to get a very good breakfast included.
The kitchens didn’t appear to be doing food at other times of day but that may have been because its low season so worth checking.
Worth having a map with you with the location marked to show taxi drivers who may not know of it.
We paid taxis 800 rupees to get from the airport (set fee) and 500 rupees to get back to the airport. Durbar Square Patan was 250-300 rupees, Thamel 500 rupees.
Although it is mostly surrounded by houses there is an 8 til late shop just across the road where you could buy an assortment of food / drink, soap, cosmetics and even shoe polish. There’s also a liquor store further down.
There are 2 restaurants nearby coincidentally both Japanese. One is called cafe U! and is only open on Friday and Saturday nights . It’s actually very informal as its part of a community centre we felt very lucky to have found it although the menu was limited it was superb and good value. They also sell home-made cakes!

It is now the 3rd time for me to come to Nepal and I always choose The Yellow House as my "Base Camp" in Kathmandu. The Rooms are good, comfortable for backpackers and have good size for staying also longer than just one night. The staff is very helpful and always friendly. Also the owners look that you feel at home and are helpful all the time.
The guesthouse is situated just a little outside of Thamel in Paknajol, which makes it a quite but very close alternative to the much more busy area of Thamel.
