We all look forward to your visit in early May. Weather will be warm with highs of around 28C (82F) and lows of 15C (60F). By May, late afternoon thunderstorms are normal. We advise to do any outdoor activities in the morning for this reason. If the storm rolls in there are plenty of places to sit and read or take a cup of local tea. Alight fleece or cardigan makes sense. Shoes: walking boots are not needed but some sensible shoes that support the ankle (trainers) are ideal for walks. We also provide shawls in your room. Hello Todd, I am glad you like our fireplace. The room is only smoky when the weather is too warm for a fire! With cold air outside the smoke is drawn up and out through louvers in the roof. Also, the air is very still at night in the winter and this helps ensure a steady column of smoke rising up directly, not blowing about the room. The metal ring is aesthetic only - to create a sense of height in the centre of the room.
An alternate option may be that designed by the famous Boris Lisanevitch for his Royal Hotel 'Yak and Yeti Bar' where he had a central fire with a copper conical chimney up to the ceiling. This can be seen today in Hotel Yak & Yeti's main restaurant.

My recommendation is to visit after September - so a December visit is perfect. Dwarika's is fine - a wonderful hotel and safe. Do stay there; it is also close to the airport so very convenient. You can fly easily to Nepal via Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, etc. The airport in Kathmandu is back to normal operation. Although there is some damage in the Kathmandu Valley, there are still many wonderful cultural icons to see - The Kumari (Living Goddess) in Kathmandu Durbar Square; the Nyatapola Temple in Bhaktapur and the treasury of arts in Patan Durbar Square - yes all open and available.
Further west, Pokhara and westwards is absolutely fine and unscathed. Bardia National Park is a wonderful base for wildlife. Easy treks from Pokhara to Ghandruk are open for business. Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha is open and a cultural must-do en route from Pokhara to Bardia by road. Equally there are flights via Kathmandu to Nepalgunj.
Come to Nepal, enjoy Nepal and please give generously to the reconstruction of Nepal - for cultural heritage we recommend Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust.
