The Cool guesthouse is located very close to the north gate in the old city. Being on the Main Street I could certainly hear the traffic from my room. The place was ok, it’s reasonably priced so I wasnt expecting a 5 star experience. The room was of a decent size, but a little on the shabby side. It’s in an old teal building which could be charming, but the charm doesn’t extend to the inside of the room. Inside it all feels and looks a little cheap, but then again it is cheap so it’s not really a complaint. The bathroom is a bit drab and the shower got to slightly warm in temperature at best and the pressure wasn’t great. The nice lady at the front desk was super helpful and friendly and helped me book a few day trips so that was good. Had breakfast once at the ‘french’ cafe and it was a bit of a let down so ate elsewhere. Coffee was terrible but there’s a place that makes great coffee right next door. All in all it was ok. It wasn’t great, but is reflective in the price. It is a lot cheaper than many places in Chiang Mai and I feel like the experience matched. I don’t have any particular complaints but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it either. Seems to mainly attract French speaking guests as the owner is French. Keep your expectations low and it will be fine.

I booked a 5 days stay but had to move out after the first night. I was in one of the rooms in the ground floor and at midnight someone tried to force my door twice. I was very scared. There’s a gate that stays open during the night so the place is not safe at all. In the same night I saw two cockroaches in the bathroom. In the morning I went to the check out and I told them what happened, but the lady didn’t see surprised and in my check out form she wrote “the guest wasn’t satisfied with the accommodations”. Why don’t you write the truth?

We are sorry that you did not enjoyed your stay. We have staff who stand all night long at our guesthouse, it is more secure than any door as they can act if needed. By the way, it is the friend you traveled with who has knocked on your door night time and try to enter your room. Our staff on site saw him, but of course did not try to stop him as he is your friend! You're talking about saying the truth, and you are right, but not to lie is the basic. Best regards.

The location is great. You come through a small shaded entrance into a pretty, quiet, lush courtyard. It is set back from the street so it is very quiet at night time. Large room, a bit tired (my floor had vinyl paper covering it)...but still charming in an old-world Thai way. Loved the little cats too :) Overall, I really recommend it and think it was really good value for money. I would stay there again!

Not gluten free and not lactose/dairy free! No European around, regardless our impressions. I have gluten and lactose intolerance and have been sick the past 10 days throughout Thailand... here I was hoping to finally find a healthy breakfast. Unfortunately they totally didnt understand and brought everything with butter. All of what we ordered was doubtful so didnt eat and left very disappointed. Please save your time and dont go there.

Hello Natasja, We are really surprised of what we can read, and even think you are not talking about the right coffee shop. Indeed, we have here plenty of gluten-free options, as pancakes, buckwheat crepes, brownies and even homemade bread. Furthermore, or staff speak 4 different languages so it is never a problem to be understood! We cook or have products with butter indeed, we do not say the contrary, but you have to understand that we can not propose everything that people want! We focus on french and gluten-free product, not dairy-free, and we never had mention about that. Feel free to visit us again, we will provide you for free a breakfast which will make you change your mind about us ;)

I found Cool guesthouse through their Trekking package on internet. The room is simple but decent and clean. We got everything we need there and unlimited drinking water. The location is good and steps away from North gate and 24 hours minimart. Only issue is the noise when someone walk up stairs at night time. Staffs are super helpful and provided clear information about everything. Our requests were fulfilled such as changing rooms, taxi bargaining, itinerary suggestion, delayed check out and etc. They offer trekking packages, cooking class and massage school all from there at reasonable price. Highly recommended!!

We enjoyed our stay very much as the room we stayed in (upstairs) was lovely, and very well decorated. The terrace and little garden are very nice. What we also enjoyed very much was the very nice staff and the good advice they gave us. We did a good 48h trek and the creps are as good as if you were in bretagne! Thanks:)

I didn't stay at the hotel but my friend and I did the jungle tour (3-day tour) and it was amazing. Our guides were extremely kind and the villages we passed through were full of kind people too. The accommodations in the villages are rustic (matts on the floor in raised huts) but cleaner and more fun to stay in than any cabin in the USA. You get to sleep in a room that comes with a mat, pillow, mosquito net and some extra blankets. The sheets and pillows probably only get washed by hand so I just put a clean tee shirt on my pillow for a makeshift clean pillow case. The food prepared for us was excellent and some of the locals even shared their "local food" with us which was always something + chilies. Delicious and like nothing I've tasted before. The best part was rafting down the river on bamboo canoes. Our guides showed us where the villagers collect jungle produce like banana palm flowers, palm hearts and other jungle resources.

We stayed here for 3 nights with our 3 young kids. The staff are very nice and pleasant. The impression we got was that this probably was a nicer place in it's heyday. We were really disappointed, we expected a nicer place from the TripAdvisor reviews, turns out these are all quite old now. Nowadays, the courtyard that faces the rooms is an awful mosquito breeding ground. There seems to be a lot of poor drainage going on and lots of junky looking stuff piled up around the sides. The problem with this is that it is impossible to sit outside the room without being literally eaten alive. The silver lining is that there is one electric mosquito zapper available to guests which is often found lying around. We used this a LOT. As this was the immediate vicinity of our ground floor room, this meant we couldn't leave the door open for fresh air in the cool of the night. The mosquito screens of the 2 windows in our room were damaged, and let in huge numbers of bugs in a short time, so we were forced to use the A/C unrelentingly. The result was stale cold air that was uncomfortable to sleep in. Other signs showing this ventilation issue was the presence of mould in our room. The bed linen was clean but the duvet seemed ready to take off and lead a life of it's own, that's how limp and icky it felt. We didn't manage much sleep. The water in the bathroom (shower and tap) stank of sewage and was too cloudy to UV sterilise. I suspect it was river water. All in all, a very unpleasant experience for our family.

Hello, We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay in our guesthouse. We have indeed sometimes some mosquitoes, as it is a tropical country and we have a courtyard for our customers. As reported by the staff, your children have let the room open a really long time, so we can guess that some mosquitoes or other bugs have entered in. As in every hotel in the country you have a mosquito zapper to help. You noticed that some mosquitoes were in the room, but you don't mention that we provide for free a mosquito repellent 100% natural as a diffuser for the room. That one works really good, without any impact on the nature or on the human health, we think it is important! For your information, we have started to renovate our rooms and we will change the bed linen, they are not new indeed, but they are good and clean! Of course, the water is not from the river! We can't be responsible when something like that happens. Even if we don't understand why you stayed here for 3 nights, if it was a so unpleasant experience for you, we hope you enjoyed anyway your stay in Chiang Mai, and in Thailand generally speaking. Regards,

Staying three nights. Located by wall of old town and easy walking to sights, bars and restaurants. Room basic but clean and comfortable with TV and air conditioning. Great breakfasts. Recommend the croque Madame. Coffee also great here. Very nice staff. Mainly dealt with Pack for whom nothing was too much trouble.
