Thapae Gate Lodge was one of Chiang Mai's "backpacker's heaven" with it's simple and quiet guestrooms. After we took over the building from the owner who has been successfully operated it for more than 8 years we did some major renovations and face-lifting what I believe that will bring this estabilishment to the next level and we can call it a "FLASHPACKER'S HEAVEN" :) All rooms are newly furnished with Western comfort beds and amenities.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Our room was fine, small, clean with a safe, TV and comfy bed and crisp bed linen. It had a tiny balcony which was a squeeze for 2 to sit on. It’s in an excellent location on a side street just off the main road which runs round the old town. The owner is friendly and the guest house is well run. I do have to disagree with previous reviews describing it as being in a quiet street. There are half a dozen bars within a 2 minute walk. We had no noise from them but every night until 3am there was a loud thumping bass noise from a distant bar/ club. Luckily we travel with ear plugs but it would have disturbed us otherwise. Maybe this is new or the previous reviewers were in a different part of the building. Apart from that, everything was fine and the price was okay.

A nice guesthouse with friendly owners. It's quiet and set back down Moon Maung soi 2 with no bars near enough to keep you awake at night. I booked suddenly due to a visa problem and the owner was very communicative and eager to assist when I asked he register me so that immigration could see me on their systems. It worked a treat. I was in room 3 which is set back a bit behind a soundproof door. The room was fine. ensuite bathroom with soap and shampoo provided, aircon, small balcony (no real view but good for drying clothes). hanger racks for clothes and a hairdryer if you need. Mood lighting in the room was also cool. It has a laid back vibe and a veranda out the front, fan assisted, so you can eat/drink breakfast or whatever. I used it for writing. Bike rental and massage places nearby as well as bar and restaurants and shops. Clean towels and an additional fan above the bed were provided. The room did smell of weed a little due to a previous occupant but that wasn't the owners fault due to law changes in Thailand. No fridge in this room but the owner offers his reception fridge to be shared which is nice. Parking for bikes is fine as you can bring it inside the sliding gate which is accessible around the clock. I'd certainly stay here again as it's clean, simple, friendly and close to all the bars and venues of Tha Pae Gate area including the weekend markets. Thanks for a nice and smooth experience.

We initially booked fir two days and ended up staying at the lodge for a week. We liked that the rooms were comfortable, quiet and clean with a few extra luxuries like a small balcony and a hair dryer. The owners and personnel are very friendly and ready to help with recommendations, booking etc. We booked a scooter via the hotel. The location is also great. Everything was within walking distance and the lane was very quiet at night. One of the owners is French and his parents were around and extremely helpful for French speaking visitors.

We ordered banana porridge and it came with bad/sour milk first. You could easily see and especially smell this mistake. No idea how neither the kitchen nor the service could realise for themselves before serving them. When we told them they already became unfriendly and bring us new ones which were bad as well with the saying “if you don’t like just order something else” So we gave those back as well and ordered a bagel with cheese and egg instead. 30 minutes have passed already! Bagel was ok, but nothing special (and to be fair there is nothing you could do wrong with a cheese bagel) When we asked for discount because of the trouble they didn’t even answer us, just left the bill without any saying. You could feel that they really were pissed of us, like it was our mistake that they serve bad food?! Also they didn’t even say goodbye anymore when we left. So all in all, bad breakfast, very unfriendly staff and bad service. Wouldn’t recommend at all!!

The location on a quieter side street was ideal, and it is close to everything that I wanted to see, do, or visit. For example, the office for Elephant Nature Park is just steps away, as is the vegan resto Taste from Heaven, laundry options, and The Lost Book Store. The hotel's restaurant offers a range of cuisines, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was small, but well equipped with AC, a kettle, hot water on demand, a small balcony for hanging clothes, and a safe in the room. If I return to Chiang Mai, I will definitely book again. · The safe in the room is very light weight and was not bolted to the wall or the cabinet. Someone could easily walk away with it if one forgot to lock the door. Additionally, there is just the small push-button lock on the doorknob, and no night chain or other way to add security to the door when one is in the room. As a solo woman traveler, this made me a bit nervous.

We booked one double room and one twin room for two nights, both with balconies. Recently renovated and is fresh and colourful. Very clean. Shower not as hot as I’d have liked, but OK. We ate in the restaurant several times (even when we weren’t staying there later in the trip as they were fully booked) and we enjoyed the food, particularly the breakfast. I can recommend the crepes and the fruit plate. Very nice, friendly staff who were helpful when booking excursions. The price is a little on the high side - it’s in line with other boutique guest houses which might be a little slicker - but we had a very happy stay here.

Incompetence at its finest. It took 45 minutes for dinner to arrive and then the appetizer came after the meal. The employees are useless and the kitchen staff can only prepare one table at a time. Just stay away.
