Spend 2 nights at the Khavi guest house upon arriving at Phnom Penh. It is a short walk from the riverfront and the Royal Palace - so the location is great! It is an inexpensive option with simple rooms. The place is not fancy and shows its age but if you are simply looking for a cheap place to sleep for a night or two its acceptable. Rooms lack any extras (TV, radio, a safe, etc.) but have hot water and decent fans. I suspect some rooms have air-con. The staff spoke minimal English but were helpful. There is no restaurant at the guest house but there are several restaurants and cafes on the same street.
I booked a double room I was pleasantly surprised by the size and comfort of the room had a great air conditioner that was nice and cold and clean bedding.the bathroom was on the smaller side but clean and good hot water service with plenty of hot water .the staff were more than helpful and so friendly and the food is good value [kha vi rice yum] I will be staying there next visit great value for money
We arrived here around 10:30pm without any prior booking, but the staff were very polite and helpful. We were given a double room which wasn't massive but had enough room for two people, was clean, had a front facing window with balcony, A/C and fan, spacious bathroom with hot shower and basic toiletries. We booked a bus to Bangkok for the following evening (at a standard price) and gave them a pile of laundry which they assured us would be done in time for our evening bus the next day (which it was) despite it being after 11pm. We didn't encounter any insects and had a very comfortable sleep. Mediocre cooked breakfast available. The guesthouse itself is dated and a bit rough around the edges, but this was our third visit to this area of Phnom Penh, where finding a place with clean sheets let alone anything else for $12 a night is a struggle, so we were more than happy to stay here. With most of these guesthouses there seems to be considerable variation between rooms, so ask to see a few if you're not happy with the first one. Obviously if you're not on a tight budget you can find better, but as a backpacker you could do much worse than stay here.…
I visited Kha Vi in July and found it to be horrible visit. We booked the guest house through an agent and thought we'd found a good deal. The staff were rude to is upon arrival and after a long wait for our room we were put into what I can only assume to be a converted bathroom. It was so small that we had to move sideways to get around the bed, the walls were dirty and the sheets were ripped. We payed for a room with tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge but these were not there. There was a hole in the ceiling with a chair underneath, I left my clothes on the chair and in the morning they were covered in feathers. The loo had no room in front if it so we had to sit on it sideways. I don't expect much for a $15 per night guest house but we didn't get the room that we payed for and the guesthouse was very quiet with plenty of free rooms. …
This is a bog standard cheap room for a backpacker, we stayed two nights then left, no window and had some disagreements. I think this is perfectly priced for a cheap few days in PP. Wouldn't stay again but I know there's some nicer hotels now, but for a first time backpacker Id probably recommend it yes!
