Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed 3 nights in this hotel which overlooks the port area and a soon to be built expressway ! The location is easily accessible to shopping, markets and sightseeing. We had a large and comfortable air conditioned room although climbing in and out of the deep bath tub for a shower required care and the shower curtain could be replaced. The hotel itself has the quirky charm of the grand old days including some original crockery. If you are a history buff or an admirer of old world grandeur then this is the place. The hotel has aged but staff are the hotel’s greatest assets. Staff provided excellent service and were attentive to our every need. We would stay here again before some big hotel chain gobbles it up.

I would say it is in good location. However, theres a lot of improvements needed for beddings and other amenities. It is antique, little changes will make it better. However, staffs are good and friendly, haven’t try restaurants. Overall it is not that bad.

Huge room, there is a small terrace off the restaurant with a view of the harbour. The food was good. Was once a beautiful hotel, but needs some life breathed into it. They seem to gaain most of their revenue from catering for cruise ships.

OK Folks once upon time this used to be one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka. That was decades ago, this is one of the very few Sri lankan government owned hotel today. This is not so luxurious to match a five star, but a pretty good hotel which fits in well for a three star. There are glitches here and there, it's an old building, you might find the hot water not working or a broken switch, pardon that, the hotel is working very hard to fix those with the little financial resources they have. The staff of the hotel are very kind and hard working. If you request them for something, they will not hesitate to try there best to satisfy your needs. The hotel has undergone a renovation recently and working hard to maintain a good menu of food. Again people are good and hard working but with the financial resources they have, there are limitations. Overall its a good 3 star hotel with a decent menu of food and really polite people. Help them by reserving your rooms with this little place which has a big history, the more guest who visit this place, the more money they get, so they can serve you better the next time your arrive. Be kind when making your reviews, try to look through the eyes of good people here who are trying to make your stay the best ever. Let encourage more people to use thus hotel so they can soon start to cater you with five star perfection.

Lunch buffet is not an international menu. Main course have a little spread. It may depend with the crowd. So check with them on the meal before you go. Also they have limited number of seats available in Harbour Bar restaurant. So can get little crowded.

What a mess. The lovely entrance hall to this hotel is highly deceptive – broken electricity socket in the room that had clearly burned out years ago, no hot water, no toilet paper. There was a breakfast menu, but when we went to the restaurant, they told us that none of the items were available. One of the managers told me I should write to them with a formal complaint, which I did, but never got a reply. I’m sure this place was nice once, but not anymore.

I booked the Grand Oriental for 3 nights for me and my family (partner, 1 year old toddler). I booked this place because I was intrigued by a 19th century hotel that was still/again running as a hotel, but as a kind of budget, 3 star accommodation. Honestly, it was like staying in the Titanic as it has so much old furniture, old grandeur feeling, fascinating twists and turns, and grittiness of a place that needs a good scrub 😬. If only the walls could talk! There were problems with the hot water, mini fridge and there was even a small flood in our room. But, honestly, because the staff were so lovely and our expectations were aligned with the 3-star stay, all of this was part of the charm. Because of the small inconveniences mentioned above, the staff also went above and beyond to make sure the problems were solved and we were comfortable. They did this all with a smile and high level of service. I would recommend my family and friends to stay here. Also, the location was good (near the train station, near the Dutch Hospital restaurants, not too far from Galle Face Green). Thank you, Grand Oriental staff and management for a charming stay!

Lovely old hotel building opposite the old port buildings. The main foyer is been recently re-furnished and is an ideal place to grab a coffee if you are in the area and want to take in the sites. Has the potential to be a really lovely venue.

I stayed here a night with my friend. After some rush works in Colombo, we checked in very late and had a good welcome. Hotel is located in a very convenient place on the heart of the island. I was given a beautiful smoking room with a nice view towards the Harbour. We didn’t book for any food but still I have experience with the food tastes pretty good while I had hanged out once for food and playing billiard. The room given was very quite, nice, enough space and good smelling. The bathroom was pretty good. The ancient theme was so attractive. Needs a little maintenance in some places like the pathway. And can also concentrate a little more on good hospitality staff. Other wise all perfect oriental. And this will always be a cool hotel for me for a long stay when they have a swimming pool. Hope to visit again. Thank you very much for you hospitality team Grand Oriental Hotel..
