We arrived before the 2pm check-in time and had to wait on the street for 20 mins - lucky it wasn't raining. This facility charges European prices for 3rd world accommodation. We were "upgraded". For the price we paid it was not an upgrade. Even after a discount of almost 50 euro for our 4 night stay, anything less than...

The rooms are clean and beds are good, however there is no air conditioning. The accommodation is close to either bus or taxi. Staff is friendly and always prepared to help out. Don't expect an hotel but a place where you can live among real Turkish locals. Bakery on the corner of the street is very good

We did not pay too much, but definitely it was not a nice stay. Room was just ok (small and curtains let the light in) but the bathroom was very little and definitely too dirty (they never cleaned the room). The location, if you like to visit Fatih in Istanbul can be ok. Although I suggest to stay in other...

A bit far from historical center to walk by feet (better to take bus). Renovation of the apartment have been made seems like 10 years ago, in reality it's not as good as on the pictures. Shower cabin leaks on the floor, so all the bathroom floor covers by water. Broken shower head sprays in different directions. Wifi in the...

We arrived to Balat Suites only to be put into another building behind reception, walking through a scary and filthy road into our room. Room smelt of mold, drought and piss. Room wasn't prepared for 4 guests as per booking and and being almost 10PM, we had to do it ourselves. We didnt have enough linen, no toilet paper either....

The location for persons having something to do at the the Kadir Has University is ideal- just a few steps away. There is a great friendly Fish Restaurant (Cicali) next door and a municipal restaurant which serves inexpensive Turkish cuisine catering to wedding parties and families (some nights there is a long wait). The hotel is near St. Stephen's Church,...

The location was wonderful, the...

The hotel is located in a lovely building overlooking the Golden Horn. The building is four stories high and stands along some sort of a local express way (2x 2 lanes) that runs along the water. The buildings technology is more or less traditional and therefore you will have the feeling that traffic runs right through your room ; even...

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighbourhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
