Overall, a good experience and a decent one night sleep. We booked at the guest house and drove there only to find out we had no room there and were taking to Toni's appartments which are in a different lcation (not waling distance). If the location is important to you, try to find put in advance where you will be staying. But be mindful that due to people not paying in advance, havng to overstay bevause of un unpredicted situations, etc, etc, booking in Tonga has a 25% chances of unpredictable changes. So relax and adapt. We did. The apartments were clean, cool and with a well equipped kitchen. They are by the road and it was sligtly noisy, but we felt well looked after, safe and confortable.

I’ve booked the whole island Tour. I was supposed to be picked-up at 10:00. Though no-one showed up. And the phone was not answered as well. After an hour waiting and several unanswered calls I finally was ‘informed’ that they ‘couldn’t do it, with no reason whatsover. Real waste of time.. Don’t book!!

The Activity Tour with Toni’s Island Tours was a very good independent shore excursion from the port of Nuku’ Alofa, Tonga. Email correspondence with Toni Matthias prior to the tour was excellent, and we appreciated that he organized this new itinerary and was continually looking for ways to improve it, for our second day in Tonga. On arrival to the port, we again walked to the last gravel parking lot on the right, across from the taxi kiosk, and found Toni’s busses parked at the end behind the larger cruise ship tour coaches. Payment was in US $ at the time of the tour, so we did not need to change currency. US dollars were also accepted for the separate admission fees at the Cave and Rainforest. Toni and Ricky were our guides, joined by Carolyn at the College and another guide at the Caves, with Davido as our driver. They were all knowledgeable, responsive to questioning, helpful and patient as they told us about each stop. They adjusted the itinerary to accommodate the weather and crowds. The bus was in fair condition. First, we visited Topou College, a Wesleyan/Methodist boarding school for junior and senior high school boys. Carolyn, our very nice American -born guide, told us how the boys are taught to be self-sufficient, and guided our tour around the campus academic buildings; the Tuloa Forest Reserve, the only rainforest on the island, for learning traditional medicine from plants; a farm for learning to raise traditional crops, cows and pigs; the Moulton Chapel; and the Tuku ‘aho Memorial Museum. Then we visited Anakulu Cave, where another guide led us as we climbed through the cave to see the beautiful clear, emerald green water at the bottom. Some guests enjoyed getting in the fresh water, but beware that it is slippery, with limited space to change clothes. Then we hiked down to the nearby beach and enjoyed spending time there before returning to the ship. We were glad that we booked Toni’s Island Tours Activity Tour. It was a fun, fairly strenuous, interesting and educational day tour that was great for a second day visit to Tonga, taking us to some unique attractions that were not offered as ship shore excursions.

The Whole Island Tour with Toni’s Island Tours was an excellent independent shore excursion from the port of Nuku’ Alofa, Tonga. Email correspondence with Toni Matthias prior to the tour was excellent, and we appreciated his patience since there were so many cruise ship schedule changes. The Toni’s Guest House Facebook page posts were interesting and, hopefully, now that the island has reopened after the COVID shutdown, it will be easier for them to share more recent updates. On arrival to the port, we walked to the last gravel parking lot on the right, across from the taxi kiosk (where I got an island map so I could follow our route), and found Toni’s buses parked at the end behind the larger cruise ship tour coaches. We checked in with our guide Sila, and paid the fee in cash in US $, so we did not need to change currency. Sila was an excellent tour guide – friendly, caring, cheerful, hardworking, knowledgeable, responsive to questioning, helpful and patient with teaching us the geology and history of each stop. Soa was an excellent driver, helpful and nice. They adjusted the itinerary to accommodate the weather and crowds. The bus was in fair condition. We explored the east and west sides of the island and the capital city on the Whole Island Tour. We visited the Ha’ amonga A’ Maui Trilothon, Blowholes, the Ancient Royal Tombs, the Abel Tasman and Captain Cook landing sites, the first settlement town, a 3-headed coconut tree, a tree full of fruit bats called “flying foxes”, a giant boulder of coral called “Tsunami Rock”, the Royal Tomb, the Royal Palace and wreckage from the January 2022 tsunami. We enjoyed all of our walks, and the cultural presentation, but do be advised that the walks are on uneven terrain. All in all, Toni’s Island Tours Whole Island Tour was a fun, active, interesting and educational day tour that was great for a first time visit to Tonga, taking us to more attractions at a lower price than the ship’s shore excursions.

Toni's Tours may have had a good write up in Lonely Planet but we found him disorganised, unpleasant to his wife who did the driving (why does she put up with him?), somewhat condescending to the locals and well past his prime. The one star rating is for his knowledge of the history and culture of Tongatapu. In hindsight I wish I'd hired a car. I'm writing this here as Toni's Tours doesn't seem to have its own Trip Advisor page, not surprising really.

Where do I start.. this place was incredibly boring. There is no WIFI, which I knew coming into this, but I did expect there to be people to talk to or things to do. I was alone in my 4 bed room which was nice, but it was incredibly awkward and hard to get anywhere. The only way to get to and from town is with a (admittedly cheap) drive from Leni, Toni's wife (as Toni is unable to drive due to heart conditions), and often I would sit and literally do nothing for hours, waiting for Leni to appear in the mornings or the afternoons so I could go into town. Toni offered to do a half day tour of the island for a ridiculous price and assured me I wouldn't be able to find cheaper, and that I'd have to recruit at least another person for the 'tour' to run. Well.. I was travelling alone and there weren't any other people around so that wasn't gonna happen. And so I found a cheaper, PRIVATE half-day tour in town and it was literally the highlight experience of my time on Tongatapu. Toni himself is an interesting man. I didn't see him treat Leni in a negative way like most reviews here state but could've been that I just missed it. He is a bit racist, but I also think that might have more to do with his age/way of thinking/"different times" kinda thing. I honestly didn't have much to do with him during my time there so I'll refrain from making any other comments. The house is a bit tricky to find. There is confusing signage indicating that the house is on one street where it's actually on the next - I was violently chased by some dogs when I made the turn onto the wrong street after being dropped off by a Taxi on the main road. All in all though, Leni was a lovely woman who helped me with most things and organised a cave + buffet night tour for my second night there. She also was patient with me when I was just short on cash at the domestic airport drop-off and happily ran me to the international to get some cash out.

Our group of 13 stayed in the two family houses and were very pleased with the accommodation. It was clean and well equipped, in a beautiful enclosed garden. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Loved being out of town and in a quiet area. Leni helped us to arrange a rental car so getting around wasn't a problem. Great option for a big group!

How this man is in business is beyond me!? He was rude, obnoxious, homophobe and at worst abusive to his staff. Advice - Avoid at all costs! I don't even like that I'm wasting my time giving him a review at all.

Hi 271 callumd. Sorry to read that you had a bad time on your tour. I am not sure who you are so I can not be specific. As I can not drive anymore since my 2 heart problems my wife usually drives and I do the talking. We act and play to the audience to entertain you between the sights. All my stories are based on facts and embroidered to make them amusing. I have been a Tongan for more than 20 years and making tours for 25 years. I can only say that most guests seem to enjoy the FAWLTY TOWERS (JOHN CLEESE) act. Hope this helps to clear the bad feeling. Also this is the first time I have learned to answer a review. Thank you. Toni.

We stayed four nights here in a decent budget room with shared bathroom and kitchen. The place is a bit worn but very clean and the garden is tidy. No breakfast is provided but after picking you up from the airport Toni will offer to drive you to a supermarket and a place to buy beer if you would like to do so. The guesthouse is located in a quiet and safe residential area. There is a supermarket, sorts of, about 1 km away and Nuku'alofa is about 5 km from the property. Toni provides cheap rides to and fro town. There is no wi-fi at Toni's. Toni's island tour is highly recommended. Toni knows a lot after 27 years on Tonga! He also helps out to arrange whale swim excursions, cultural experiences and so on. Toni was very friendly and reliable dealing with us. What significantly detracts from our experience is Toni's behavior towards his Tongan wife Leni whom he kept yelling at and making fun of in front of us and other guests. He was also talking in a disrespectful way of Tongans in general. This is really a shame since, apart from this, we were very happy with our stay.

Hi Bengt H.. Sorry to hear you feel upset by the banter between me and Leni.. This is part of our FAWLTY TOWERS (JOHN CLEESE) and is not meant to be taken serious. Also I have been a Tongan for more than 20 years and any stories I told was meant to amuse not to offend. Hope this helps to clear the air. Thank you. Toni.

I didn't get to meet Toni but the staff were great and very accommodating. The accommodation is very basic but it's also very cheap (don't think there's anywhere cheaper in Tonga). Only real grumble was the location as it's quite a distance from the city centre - although they do run a cheap shuttle service at designated times during the day.
