After our wonderful two weeks in Myanmar, we were delighted to complete our trip staying at the Sule Shangri-La for three nights, including New Year's Eve. The hotel is located close to the Bogyoke Aung San Market and a local dry market, historic buildings, local and international restaurants, several banks, and we only had to use Grab taxi once to get to the

We were given the option of upgrading to the Horizon Club floor for US$25 and we are so happy that we did. The happy hour each evening was wonderful with wine, beer, and spirits and the food was delicious; although it was advertised as "light bites," the spread was amazing. We also enjoyed the use of the lounge for breakfast which was private and quiet; we didn't feel like we missed a thing not going to the ground floor of the restaurant. We were absolutely spoiled, and I feel like all guests in the lounge were treated above and beyond our expectations and regardless of status or age. The staff are tremendous, kind, and care about their jobs. Nwe Nwe, Terry and Allan in particular made sure that we were always comfortable, and even though the lounge was busier than usual for the holidays, the service was not compromised.

Our room was spotless, served by our house keeper, Ms. Phyo. Housekeeping checked on us three times a day, including topping up fresh fruit. We do not like to change our towels or sheets for environmental reasons and this is the first hotel during our two week trip that honoured our request. Although this is an "older" hotel, the rooms still look bright, clean and fresh, and we liked the traditional style of the hotel that honours the tradition of woodwork from Myanmar.

We were able to make use of the hotel gym and it is one of the biggest and most well-equipped gyms we have seen for a hotel. We did not make use of the pool.

Finally, we were so pleased to see water refill stations around the hotel. We didn't have to use or purchase one plastic bottle during our stay because of the availability of drinking water.

My one request would be that a tip box be provided at the reception. We do not like to tip individual staff and like to leave a tip on checkout to be divided amongst the staff. The staff at this hotel really deserve it; please consider a tip box.

After 24 years in business the Sule Shangri-La Yangon is looking perhaps a little tired – not altogether surprisingly. Coronavirus temperature checks, alongside the security screening of small bags as well as larger luggage, make arrival less welcoming than it otherwise might be, but the cheerfully smiling staff – I’m judging from the eyes, they all had masks over their mouths and noses – go a long way towards compensating for that. F & B is now perhaps a little sub-par for a city which has improved dramatically in terms of bar and restaurant offerings in recent years, and the Horizon Club fare falls far short of what many of the chain’s other hotels typically offer guests paying the premium for rooms on the Horizon floors, but then again the cost of these rooms is lower. It’s still one of the better places in the city, and given the ease of pedestrian access to major local destinations in a town now prey to near permanent traffic gridlock, the location is hard to beat. It can’t compete with the newly opened Rosewood for glitz, but staff reliably continue to go the extra mile. After a happy hour drink I had to leave the bar for dinner and declined the complimentary second glass. “Come back later,” the barman said, “We’ll hold it for you”. I’m not a frequent visitor to Yangon, but I’d stay here again.

we recently stayed at the Sule Shangri-La in Yangon just as the caronavirus situation was taking hold across the globe and it is fair to say that this 5 star hotel showed its true colours in looking after the health and welfare of its customers with great dedication and consideration. Every time you entered the restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or indeed upon entering the hotel itself, you temperature was monitored by a slew of hotel staff and with hand sanitizer liquid at strategic locations.

The hotel itself was wonderfully laid out, with top floors dedicated to hotel club members and a level 21 club with free drinks and finger food for the multi hour ‘happy hour’.

Breakfast was a delight with a very large ranging buffet to surely suit all tastes and nationalities.

The location of this hotel was also ideal given its address in the center of the city.

overall a very pleasant stay.

I loved my stay at the hotel, the service at Shangri-La in any location is great, but this time they really went above and beyond. It was my birthday while I was staying here, and when my wife and I returned to the room after sightseeing they had left a birthday cake in the room for me. We didn’t tell them it was my birthday, so they must have just seen it on my passport and decided to go above and beyond.

In addition, my wife is a neat freak (I mean that in a loving way honest!) and I think this is the first hotel we have ever stayed in anywhere in the world from London to Tokyo where she hasn’t complained that there is a spot on a glass, or some dust etc.

Sule Shangri-La Hotel in Yangon complies with all the international high standard of the Shangri-La chain. But what really makes the difference is the personalized customer service that can hardly be found in a city hotel. With their smile and kindness, the Front Office team members created a familiar environment and contributed to making my wedding memorable. The suite room was spacious, with a living room, a large bedroom and two bathrooms. A beautiful flower petals decoration on the bed welcomed and surprised us, wishing an unforgettable honeymoon (that, by the way, has been). We also had access to the club lounge, a quiet place on a high floor where a delicious buffet is served at the breakfast time and as happy hour. Thanks from the heart to those team members. Front Office team Manager Wai Wai, Htet Htet (Duty manager), Ko Zaw( Duty Manager) Thatoe, Me Me Nyein, Htet Phone, Ko Saw, Ameko, Khin Zar, Ko Ko Lin, Ko Jason, Ko Moo Thaw & concierge team. Also special thanks to housekeeping team & Ms Khin Lay who helped us the left item in the room after we checked out. Sales & event team Thet Htet, Nyi Nyi Zaw & Ms Zin Min for taking care of our wedding & rooms booking. Also thanks to Rooms Director Aung Than Soe.
See you again at my next sojourn in Yangon.

We had a really enjoyable 3 night stay at the Sule, Shangri-La. Located in the downtown area, it is close to a number of major sites. Our visit was to celebrate our 44th wedding anniversary and the hotel kindly presented my wife with flowers and a cake. The Horizon Club Lounge on the 21st floor was a great location to start the day with breakfast and enjoy drinks and canapés in the evening.
All the staff were very friendly and professional.
Highly recommend the Horizon Club rooms.

I just spent 3 nights at the Sule Shangri-la and it was my second visit to Yangon. Previously I stayed at the Park Royal, which was good, but the SSL is much better.

The location is perfect. Near Sule Pagoda and 30 mins walk or 10 mins taxi to Shwe Dagon Pagoda (I walked each time and it is a very pleasant walk). It is also about 5 mins from the big market and you can easily walk to the river or Chinatown as well.

The rooms are large and very well equipped. And the staff are wonderful across the board from the pick up driver, the lobby staff, the bar staff and the restaurant. But the housekeeping staff were especially good, especially Nway in the evening. They made sure the room was perfect.

There is also a bank and ATM in the lobby and it works no problem with foreign ATM cards.

Would I come back to Yangon? Absolutely. There is still so much to see. And would I stay at the SSL? Definitely.

We used this lovely hotel as our base for two weeks travel in Myanmar. Although not the closest to the airport for the various trips we did, it was an excellent choice for exploring Yangon. Very clean, super friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable rooms with nice amenities. Good view of the pagoda from our room. The breakfast was excellent, many different options to suit everyone’s taste. Our favourite was the Indian section, our girls loved the pancake and waffle station. Their water cooler in the lobby to encourage refilling bottles was impressive.

I am not sure, my stay at the hotel was included with Avalon river cruise booking, this is the hotel that was selected by Avalon and transfers from and to the hotel were included as well. I would assume they have a membership program as I was asked if I wanted to upgrade my room which at an additional cost of I think it was $50.00 which gave access to the gym and a couple other things that I can't recall at this time.
Answer from Antoine S

For your convenience, the hotel can arrange for airport pick-up at US$40. Alternately, you can take a taxi at the airport. Yangon taxis are not metered and many do not have air-conditioning. It is advisable to negotiate before embarking on your ride. Cost is approximately US$10.
