I stayed here for 3 nights on a business trip. At the recommendation of my local counterpart, I stayed. As mentioned by other reviewers, the rooms are refurbished so it looks pretty modern. The room and the bathroom was clean and adequately provided as with most hotels would.

Good points:

1. Clean room
2. Friendly staff

However, some drawbacks:

1. I stayed at the end of the corridor on the 4th floor and there are 2 pertinent issues.

- the phone keeps ringing at the employee's quarters at the end of the corridor (I assume that other guests are calling for room service). It does ring a lot and if its a night time, it can be quite annoying.
- without fail after 10pm every night, there were loud music being heard. I believe it is from the KTV 2 floors down.

2. Some hotel employees cannot commute in English well but they really try to please you (so its not really a drawback)

3. The WIFI provided is pretty bad. At times, I get it, other times I dont get a reception at all and even if I do, it wouldnt load anything at all.

4. Construction next door which starts as early as 7am inclusive Sundays!

5. Room can be small

I got myself a deluxe room on a high floor so my experience might be different from others. There was also no construction when I was there. My room is huge (and ceiling high), the television is so far away (8-10m) from my bed I have problem seeing the details. In contrast my hotel room in the city centre was so small that the TV is mounted like 80cm from the bed and they have to put it near the ceiling to increase the distance. The rooms are very well furnished (best value for money IMHO) and bigger than the family room that I had booked at the nearby Crystal Palace Hotel. It is a modern hotel with card entry. If you stay at the hotel you get a 20% discount at the Spa and the ONLY treatment I would recommend is the traditional massage at 10,000 kyat before discount. The Monalisa Restaurant (Level 1) is actually excellent and reasonably priced that I ended having dinner there every night. The breakfast is not excellent but quite good. There is actually an omelette counter so you can have you eggs done in any way but I did not see any eggs swimming in grease.
While the Wifi is not great, the signal is relatively strong and it is actually better than most hotels in Myanmar. Internet speed is not fast in the whole country and may break off.
Having stayed at various locations in Yangon, I can say this hotel is very centrally located. You can walk to visit Chauk Htat Gyi and Nga Htat Gyi Pagodas and be back within 2 hours without rushing. Shwedagon is also within walking distance.Downtown and Kandawgyi Lake are also not far away.
The best thing about this hotel is the hot water. You get very hot water very fast, better than some 5 star hotels.
Try not to venture to the basement as it is a "Love Tunnel" mostly for the local businessmen. The hotel staff is helpful, friendly and professional. Highly recommended, it is unbeatable at the price I paid. The only negative about this hotel is that there are no shops, shopping centres or amenities nearby. There is a diesel generator planted at the entrance of the hotel so any electrical outages are very short.

Better to plan your trip in advance to Yangon. High demand but very limited offer of hotels. Prices are very high and there are bad surprises. Shwe Gone Dain Hotel is located in the heart of Yangon, a few hundred meters from the famous and beautiful Shwedagon Pagoda. That's all the positive I can write about this hotel.
Rooms are old, not clean. The underground floor of the hotel is a brothel (the "love Tunnel") and you quickly understand that most (if not all) the hotel rooms are for the distinguished brothel guests. The massage floor is also not for traditional massages.... Busy a night with a lot of locals.

Yikes. The supply does not meet the demand for rooms in Yangon and I had to leave my hotel due to no availability. I booked this place because I had no other choice but would never stay here again.

When I checked in and asked for a non-smoking room the desk clerk literally laughed out loud. That should have been my clue to turn around and run! Some of the highlights
-Woke up throughout the night to fighting dogs outside my window (6th floor)
-Rotten moldy bathtub (although the water was hot and good pressure)
-The first room I walked into was like a smoking lounge- they easily switched my room once I refused to go inside
-Internet, like most places, was bad
-Terrible breakfast- if you went after 7:30 there was nothing left expect eggs swimming in grease
-The bed was a queen, very comfy, with great linens and pillows. No surprise that this was the highlight...see below
-Great tv and channels- I used it to escape the reality of my situation
-$85/night and it had a separate living room and kitchenette. You just wouldn't want to actually cook in it.
-There is a bar/pool that again, would only be used by certain clientele.
-The location is terrible- sooooo much traffic

Like most people in Burma, the people here are very nice. The problem is, I got the strange feeling like they were wondering why I checked in. Most of the time I was there I never saw any other women. I talked to some locals and found out why- this is a pay by the hour, sex worker friendly hotel. I was so freaked out I wouldn't leave my room once I get in from work.

Don't stay here. All the reviews are correct. I am a business traveller and had no choice but able to finally move out this week. It is NOISY. There is drilling and construction from 10-5pm every day and note it usually goes on till 7pm plus despite the letter from the manager. The rooms are so small for $75US that you can barely walk around the bed without hitting a knee. There is no wardrobe. I had cold water every day and asked three times why they don't have hot water. Don't expect to work at night because the lighting is impossible - two night lights that you would need to use a flashlight to see anything. Really, don't stay here - the company that I work for put me in here as they were in a jam but I don't think they will put that over on anyone again. Just awful and ruins anything about Myanmar. Staff only so so and reception is pathetic - they just say yes and do nothing to sort anything out. Bathroom is a joke. Sink is about 6inches! All in one and everyday the cold water floods it. Truly a terrible experience.

Stayed here for four nights. Location is a bit far from downtown but there is a local bustop nearby which cost just 200 kyats per ride. The hotel provides generator backups to Yangon’s daily power cuts so that’s great. There’s an emphasis on security in the form of an extra password-locked door at lift lobby, but to me that’s just a dash of inconvenience. The room is very well designed – I especially liked the direct usb ports provided. Killed a couple of mosquitoes in the room, and my hot water shower takes a couple minutes to heat up. Faint KTV music can be heard through room insulation on weekend nights. The hotel massage was just ok, not as good as I read.

Regarding the WiFi, they’re using the daily password system which I hate as it almost always gives me problems. Sure enough, my Wifi only works for the first night, after which I ditched using hotel WiFi since I’ve got my own mobile data. The staff were friendly with ready smiles and as a previous review points out, breakfast was outstanding. Absolutely loved the fried rice n ‘potato smiles’
