My favorite choice in Yangon. Rooms might look a bit tired, but everything was very clean, including sheets, pillows and towels. The hotel is several minutes from the Eastern Gate of Shwedagon pagoda, in a quaint neighborhood with many monasteries.
The view of Shwedagon from the roof top bar is fantastic at night. The buffet breakfast offers lots of Western and Asian options, fruit and veggies. The staff was nice and helpful in an unobtrusive way and I really liked the glass water dispenser in the room.
Just around the corner from the hotel there is a great little restaurant - Jana Mon Ethnic Cuisine. You can get snacks and fruit from the market below the Eastern stairs of Shwedagon (they make delicious rice pancakes there) and in front of the hotel there is a tiny place serving good strong coffee.
Overall great value for money.

This hotel is great. Their service is excellent and the staffs are very warm and friendly. The rooms are clean and the water from the shower is strong. But the buffet breakfast is rather expensive and they isn’t much varieties. Good for short stay.

I really liked the Merchant Art . The location is perfect , not only for visits of Shwedagon Pagoda . We also walked to Scot's Market for example .The breakfast on the roof terrace is the most beautiful start of a day in Yangon . The views on the golden pagodas in the morning sun takes your breath away . The buffet is great , good choice of Asian and Western food , good coffee .
We had a room without window what made it very quiet .

This hotel is an excellent choice when visiting Yangon. It’s centrally located, clean, secure and you won’t find a nicer staff. The food is good and they have a rooftop bar with great views of the Pagoda. I highly recommend staying here when visiting Yangon.

Spotless room with everything you need, bathroom a bit basic. Located in a nice neighborhood, taxi takes you I 10 minutes to the centre. Nice rooftop bar to have a beer with a view on the pagoda, which is a 5 minute walk away. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

I know I shouldn't expect much of a hotel breakfast, but the buffet was revolting. Butter was served in a dish full of water. French toast was like flaccid rubber. If you're staying here skip the breakfast.
As far as the hotel goes, it generally looks okay, has an incredible view of Shwedagon Pagoda from the roof terrace.
You need to plan how you use the bathroom, as the shower sprays everywhere despite the curtain and will flood the floor. There is also a weird grate mat on the floor of the bathroom to try and combat the temporary pool from showering, which looks awful and is uncomfortable to stand on.
The bed was firm which was fine, but the pillows were lumpy.
The wifi was poor, but I had bought a SIM at the airport so I just relied on that.
Overall, I'm glad I only spent one night. You get what you pay for. If I ever come back to Yangon I will be staying at the Chatrium, which for only double the price was infinitely better.

With friendly staff and clean rooms this will suit most travelers. The bathroom is a bit small wetting the floor with every shower. Beds are hard, but I guess it's softer than the floor :-)
I had a windowless room, there are about 6 to 8 per floor with about 12 to 14 rooms that have windows.
Location is good with about a $3 AUD or 3000 Kyats to most parts of the city. Plenty of small shops to buy essentials at within a 2min walk. There is one across the road.
Breakfast is included, with a small but nice buffet and you can also order from their menu as well.
WIFI is good in all areas of the hotel and the rooftop bar has a great view. Cocktails are $4 USD each.
If you found this review helpful please click the thanks button.

First of all, I really don't like to write negative reviews about a place where the staff is great. And at Merchant Hotel the stuff was indeed great, friendly and helpful - and I thank them for that.

However, obviously the staff is not the main reason for staying at a hotel. I think that future tourists need to book this hotel only after they understand what they will receive in exchange, since the pictures, name and price are misleading.

1) The view from the roof was indeed beautiful, but the roof deck looked like a deserted playground with scattered plastic furnitures and artificial grass around.

2) My room had no window. I've been traveling Asia for the last two years and Europe and other place beforehand and I have never given a room without a window. It felt like a dorm - dark and depressing.

3) I found that the area of the hotel was pretty bad. Yes, it is literally 5 minutes walk from Yangon's main destination - Shwedagon Pagoda - but is that a good enough reason to book a hotel? Moreover, once you've been to this amazing place, there are so many other nice places to visit in Yangon and they are far!

4) Breakfast - I agree with previous reviews. Breakfast was bad, no other way to put or state it.

5) I ended up staying at the Shangri-La. Yes, I paid $100 more per night, but I also had an amazing gym, great breakfast, perfect location to check out Yangon from, a pool, a helpful concierge, restaurants and the Sule Pagoda right outside.

Again, I am not saying that Merchant Hotel is bad - I am just saying that it wasn't what I was expecting when I saw the 4 star ranking on different sites. You need to know what you'll get for your $, and for me it simply wasn't enough. The "boutique" approach doesn't make justice to the word either. To me it felt more like a dorm. I'll end on a positive note - the staff.

Enjoy Yangon, it's an awesome place.

Cheers all.

Dear guest, You had booked under the Merchant Art RESIDENCE, and NOT the Merchant Art Boutique Hotel. All rooms in the Merchant Art RESIDENCE HAS NO WINDOWS, as it states in the listing. However, all rooms booked in the Merchant Art Boutique Hotel does have windows. Your review is for the wrong listing as every room in the Art Boutique listing has windows.

This hotel changed the rate on us at check-in, despite us having a written confirmation! We asked Manager to help - but he was not interested. Pretty poor attitude actually. Beware of this hotel - they are not honest!

This is an offensive review. The rate was not changed at all please do not lie. What occured was you had booked a room which, on booking.com clearly stated it is a room for 2 people. You brought additional guests and we therefore had to give you an extra charge. This is similar to any other hotel and is nothing out of the ordinary. Remember, when you bring in additional guests we also will be providing them with breakfast, just one of the factors why there is an additional charge. There is no truth nor is there any justification in this review or your actions. Your written confirmation was for 2 guests as stated when you booked on booking.com. You cannot bring additional guests and expect the same rate because it is not stated as such in the reservation when you made the booking.

My wife and I stayed in three different hotels in Yangon during our four nights there. It is not the easiest place to find quality accommodation. The first places we found were amiss for various reasons, but I'm so glad we moved to the Merchant. This hotel is new, clean, comfortable, and very well priced. The neighborhood is ideal, not just for visiting the temple, but for wandering around and observing Burmese life. Service was great; all the staff were friendly and helpful. Being surrounded by art is always a plus too! This will be our FIRST choice if we ever return to Yangon.

Hi student card is not ok. You see every guest who checks in we have to submit documents to the immigration department as part of the bylaws. The immigration department won't accept it and therefore we cannot either. Apologies for the inconvenience
