My boyfriend and I lived here for about two months back in college; we were on a study abroad trip and there was a Mandarin school for foreigners located on the upper level of one of the hotel buildings. This is a pretty average Chinese hotel, but I was quite impressed with it because the rooms were large, clean, attractive, and were a great value for what we got. (For all you Westerners, yes, the bathrooms included nice Western style toilets. The showers, however, are Chinese style, so there is no bathtub, FYI). The rooms (we stayed in two different ones) are pretty big, and there is ample bathroom and storage space. This is not a fancy place, just a basic hotel that serves mostly middle class Chinese tourists and business people, so don't expect oppulent surroundings.

We booked this hotel through Hostelworld for A$30 a room and paid a deposit. We arrived in Beijing about 8 o'clock at night and followed the instructions to take a bus into the centre of Beijing. The instructions then were to take a taxi. However despite the fact that we had taken the precaution to get the name and address of the hotel written in Chinese, we were not able to find a taxi who would take us. The temperature was about -10°. Eventually two young women who spoke a little English came to our aid and managed to persuade a taxi driver -- apparently the only one in Beijing with a map - to take us. It took nearly an hour as he kept stopping every five minutes to ask people directions . We went up and down tiny alleys (hutongs) beside the canals lined with karaoke bars and saw a lot of the night life of Beijing which probably most westerners don't see.

We eventually found the hotel and paid the taxi driver a huge tip for his efforts. We thought our problems were over...
