We spent 3 days and 2 nights at the Maquipucuna Rainforest Reserve and Lodge in early November. The Reserve is located in a beautiful and remote area of the rainforest about 2 hour’s drive east of Quito. Staff was friendly and went out of their way to make our visit enjoyable. At least one English speaking staff member is always...

I spent 2 nights here and the surroundings are amazing. The bird life and insects are wonderful and the staff at the lodge maximize the experience. it's eco-tourism done very low-key. With a bit of follow-up Maqui arranged transport from UIO later in the day at a reasonable price. I was arranging this trip solo. Every plan they made was...

The juice we had with many of our meals was absolutely amazing. I will never forget the pineapple juice. Came in late August, so missed the spec bear season. That would have been amazing to see them. Arsenio was our guide and he was great. He could literally spot a warbler from 150 yards away. He had his own scope...

We spent a month birdwatching in North West Ecuador and loved it. The highlight for us was Maquipucuna. The managers there organized a trip for us which started with 2 nights in the community ecotourism project at Yunguilla. Then an amazing 6-hour hike through some spectacular primary forest, down to the beautiful lodge at Santa Lucia, where we spent 4...

Maqui is a fairly plush bed-and-breakfeast feeling eco lodge in the Ecuadorian cloud forest. The guides, including Carlos and Edison, are extremely knowledgeable and aim to please. The birding is superb, and ancient Yumbo trails add a historical backdrop to the locale. An extensive trail system provides for abundant exploration, and be sure to visit St Lucia lodge up the...

We stayed 2 days - 1 night and it was overwhelming. Different options of guided tours in the reserve. Arcenio showed us beautiful birds, explained every tree and plant ant its virtues, guided us through the rainforest. We loved it. He showed us where the Puma ate a porcupine, fortunately we did not meet him directly. Lodging is excellent -...

I first visited Maquipucuna in 1999 and had always wanted to go back and spend more time in this amazing cloud forest. I finally had the opportunity in February - and I was not disappointed. The forest has matured and the lodge itself has been improved, but it's still remote and quiet and beautiful. Our cabin was comfortable and the...

This lodge is meant for those interested in nature specifically. It is located in a large reserve that is primarily old growth forest with some secondary forest.
