I love the Hotel Monasterio in Cusco and it made a great base of operations for a few days. Be aware that you are not allowed to bring anything larger than a back pack weighing about 15 lbs. when you go to Machu Pichu - no suitcases or multiple parcels. So, you will need a place to leave your other luggage while you are gone. The hotel will do this for you and give you a place to return before embarking on the next segment of your journey.
I heartily agree with the those who recommended spending the night at the Monastery hotel that is right at the entrance to the Park. The accommodations are excellent; the staff friendly and helpful and, being right at the entrance means that you can visit the Park twice on a single entrance ticket. Our tickets were good for 24 hours, so it was possible to visit the park in the afternoon, upon arrival, and again very early in the morning. This also allows you some flexibility if you should have rain or fog when you first arrive.
